Okay so here it goes Acer Extensa 5620z Thanks to the summer break I've restored my energy and tried to install Mac OS for the third (and probably last) time. I decided to use one of the new releases: Kalyway 10.5.2, Leo4All v3 and iAtkos v4i.. What a luck that it ended on the first one.. Big credit for yokiro, who made a great tutorial. However it was in French but thanks to his advices and google translate I made use of it. http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=100492 If your audio doesn't work after the install use this: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=96434 It fixes also problems with the shutdown experienced by the patch users earlier. So in a short message: 1. Make partitions in gparted as you like 2. Disk utility one for HFS Journalled 3. Bootup the Kalyway installer with "-x" 4. Select ONLY the following options: - Vanilla kernel 9.2 - Mobo chipset (choose all suboptions) - USB Fix - Power Management Bundle 5. Install What is working: CPU: Intel Dual Core T2310 is recognised as Intel Core 2 Duo 1.46 GHz GFX: Intel GMA x3100 @ 1280x800 with QE & CI Audio: ALC268 with working built-in mic, internal speakers and headphones recognised as Intel High Definitioon Audio Touchpad: Synaptics - ok Airport: Broadcom BCM4311 recognised as third party but works Not working: LAN: not present in the system profile PCMCIA/ExpressCard: haven't seen it Card Reader: not working Wi-Fi Led: off And finally words of appreciation go to Detosx who dramatically increased my Mac knowledge, especially at the beginning. Tadaaa

Okay, I've finished with exams so now I can return to the Mac stuff At the moment I'm downloading the new iAtkos v2.0i and also updated my BIOS to the newest version. Hope it will stick this time.. I was absent quite a while - which release is the best now? I mean when I was playing here Detosx told to use iAtkos. Did anything change?

Zero_zen, how did you manage to get your Darwin Boot working? As far as I remember I've got write errors while trying to apply it. Did you have some sort of problems on this stage or it just worked perfectly? Nice to hear that another 5620 is working pretty well.

Geez.. Acer is going mad with 5620 BIOS updates, 2 weeks ago I've installed 1.25 and it was the newest.. Now they have developed 1.29 and 1.31.. Does anyone have a detailed information what changes have been made? Because on the acer site there is only a file to download without details.

Hi Detosx I'm afraid that my Mac adventure is suspended for a few months. The reason why is that I'm learning for the high school finals that will take place in May. I've got loads of work and desperately need my laptop to access encyclopedia, wiki and other useful articles because I don't like to use the manual really. And I will be taking the extended english exam, so if you see errors please notify me. However I still hope that I will find some time to test that Kalyway option on an external display. If that won't make it for me I will have to think about some hardware updates for my laptop (it's difficult when talking about laptops, but I would like to see how a 250 GB Fujitsu would work with Mac - remember that my major problem is the hard drive question). Even though I'm not trying for the moment, I still watch the whole forum and thread and hope that I find someone with similiar problems to mine. greetz, Wojciech

I've installed JaS Mac OS X 10.4.8 version a while ago and.. It's working perfectly.. I mean there are no slow downs like in Leopard.. Could you tell me what is wrong with that? When I install Leopard it worked terribly slow.. Now underneath Tiger it's working brilliant.. And btw how do I make my X3100 run at 1280x800 in Tiger? How to apply the Taruga patch so I can have sound? EDIT: After I applied the Taruga patch I had sound but... Somehow it switched off my AirPort so I permanently lost my Internet connection. After the reboot the system shows me that I have to restart my computer.. And I can't boot up MacOS any more Thanks a lot!

Bueh, still I haven't forced my laptop to work correctly. However I've downloaded the newest BIOS from the Acer website, and applied it under Vista (I will use it until I find what is causing that massive slowdown under Leopard). I've checked my hard drive, it's NCQ capable and seems to pass all AHCI features. My laptop motherboard uses the ICH-8M chip. Could it be possible that the system would ran fluently on the Kalyway edition? I'm just asking because I have a break with OSX86 because I will need my computer working for a few days. However I will return to it certianly

It's for sure the HDD - while I'm copying files from a DVD it's running blazing fast.. End exactly with the end of data transfer it goes back to slow mood.. More to come

OK, here it goes: 1. I've managed to find out on a polish forum what could be the problem with performance. Someone said about switching my HDD to AHCI mode.. It was set like that in BIOS but I changed it for a second to IDE, and switched it back to AHCI.. Effect? The intro animation worked blazing fast with flawless sound ;| I've managed to make it to the registration dialog but still no symbols were appearing while typing. So I killed the system with the power button and plugged the USB keyboard to a different plug. After booting the computer up there was something strange - the grey apple animation ended with a message that I should reboot my Mac. After rebooting everything was once again working in 5 fps and ratatatatata sound.. So I decided to format the disk once again and install the Mac system with the plugged USB keyboard right from the beginning. I've set the following options: 1. Didn't use Darwin_Boot at all 2. Didn't select none of the EFI options 3. Selected x3100 graphics driver 4. Selected Intel Speed Step 5. Selected SMBIOS fix Installed everything on a journalled partition.. After rebooting (the system boot up from the DVD Boot system) the animation was running the crappy performance but I haven't lost my faith. And it was worth it because the keyboard finally worked. I'm writing this post form Safari browser in my Mac OS.. Still got terrible issues: -Speed - I think it's clearly related to the AHCI problem but got no idea how to solve it.. -Sound - I had it working flawlessly from the speakers during the animation twice.. No it's that sort of ratatatata.. But maybe the AHCI fix will make it -NO DVD DRIVE - it seems that Mac treats my DVD device as a Hard Drive - I can't eject it Please heeeeeeelp EDIT: I've made a restart and the system was working perfectly for 5 minutes! I've got sound through the speakers, and could manage to do everything without problems.. But suddenly everything went slow and continues to behave that way. So for sure it's caused by AHCI. But the question is: how do I solve that?

Aaa Help Help Help 1. I've made everything like Detosx said, with a little bit of advice of iAtkos readme. The first problem was the Darwin_boot script which returned me messages that setting up the boot failed because it's read only. 2. However I made it, and launched the system using the Darwin loader from the DVD but it's working very slooooow. I mean the intro works about 5 fps synchronizing with that rat-ta-ta-ta-ta music :/ I don't know what is the problem. 3. Then in configuration is the biggest problem - no keyboard input working. I mean I can adjust volume using the notebooks controls but typing any letters is impossible. I've plugged an external USB keyboard and have the same problem. And I'm stuck at this point because you need to enter some registartion info... Btw you were right with Kalyway - after installing the system was crashing on the grey apple logo. Please heeeeeelp

Hi Detosx, First of all my idea is a little bit more radical - I want Mac OS to be the only system on the PC.. You're right with the search, but it is difficult to find someone with a similiar hardware spec.. And it's not working at the moment Okay, I'm downloading the iAtkos version right now..
  12. Acer Laptop users (Intel).

Whoa, Detosx that is quite frightening.. Luckily I don't travel with my laptop so much, but I will be aware of what you say.. So folks, I've downloaded Kalyway Mac OS X 10.5.1, made backups of my important files and.. What's next? I mean if I reboot my laptop with the Kalyway CD in it (the Installer works, but I didn't manage to go past the language choice because I didn't have my data stored) which options/drivers should I choose? And which patches/fixes will be recommended for my hardware (I will put it on the pendrive and apply after the install) ? Try to explain the installation as much as you can please, because I'm a TOTAL n00b for this kind of systems.. I mean this will be the first time I install the Mac so have your fingers crossed..

Hmm it's nice with the sound because those from acer deliver crappy performance.. I use the earphone socket to connect the laptop to the HiFi set, and set the volume from the remote controller.. Nice to hear that the socket is working. Yeah I've heard that there are problems with the Intel WiFi module.. My second notebook is HP Compaq nx7400 and I think if I tried to install MacOS there, it would cause huge problems with the SoundMax AD1981HD chip, and the mentioned Intel WiFi.. But the sign shows me "Broadcom 802.11g" so it's not Intel for sure. How to check detailed information about it? Back to the Card Reader question.. My portable player is better known as Nokia 6151 I've got a DKU-2 cable to connect it through USB.. Do you think it's going to work properly when I use it with iSync and a Nokia plugin? Then this problem would be history.. I also think that buying a real Mac is the greatest idea.. However I'm still quite young and depend on what my parents buy.. One day I'll buy the Apple stuff for sure Thanks for the investigation Detosx

Hello there! I would like to say a big HELLO to the whole InsanelyMac community and join the Acer Laptop users.. To make things funnier I've got an even stranger 5620 spec - the 5620Z version with the following: CPU - Intel Pentium Dual-Core (recognized as Core 2 Duo) T2310 1,46 GHz RAM - 2 GB Chipset - Intel 965M Santa Rosa GPU - Intel GMA X3100 Audio - Realtek HD Audio ALC-268 HDD - Hitachi 120 GB SATA DVD - Slimtype DVD A DS8A1P PCMCIA - Texas Instruments PCIxx12 Cardbus Controller Wi-Fi - Broadcom 802.11g CardReader - Texas Instruments PCIxx12 Integrated FlashMedia Controller Which of these components do work, and which still cause problems? I'm seriously thinking on a move to the Mac platform but hope that it won't bring bigger trouble.. The most important thing is the Wi-Fi card.. Because it's my only way to connect to the Internet. Also the card reader would've been useful cause I use it to load files to my portable mp3 player. Fine working audio and 1280x800 on the x3100 also would make me happy
