  1. Need a new Notebook

its highly unlikely you are going to get many responses on this post. It's a rather hard list to come up with. Basically, nearly all laptops have limitations and you aren't going to find many easy native installations, matching all those specs. There are just way too many configurations and types of components out there. (I'm assuming you want native-like laptop for ease of use, or you wouldnt be asking that question). Id say you have a couple options: a) buy a macbook pro, build a custom desktop via the osx86 component wiki, or 3, try to find a list of laptops that work. Again, you will not be able to pick and choose the hardware you want in most laptops. There is however, a website dedicated to netbooks here that shows a compatibility chart... http://www.mymacnetbook.com/compatibility-chart/ Its probably no use to you though if you want a high end OSX laptop. I haven't come across any other charts for laptops yet, but you are free to look around. Id suggest you find a computer that has the specs you are looking for, then hit up the wiki and check compatibility of each component. OSX86 takes a lot of time (usually hours or days), research, and patience. Treat your OSX86 as a hobby instead of a computer for practical use. You are really limiting your options when you start talking about GPU specs and a lot of laptops will be missing video out and many more are missing features like sleep or even shutdown or restart. Weigh out what is most important to you. Good luck!
  2. i'm sure this has been asked 1000 times, but Im new to chameleon since I never used that before, and am wondering if someone could clarify how I use the new cham features to install some kexts. I finally got 10.6 working except I have to use a usb keyboard and mouse on my laptop, so I think I need some of the voodoo files to be installed. previously I always used a distro of some sort, so I never really learned how to manually install kexts thanks
  3. I wish I could help you with your video card issues, but I have not gotten that far yet with 10.6. Do you have your sound card and mouse/kb working properly?
  4. Not sure why my first post the screenshot didn't show up, but I thought I'd just pop that in here now. Maybe someone will have an idea where I should start when it comes to identifying my problem
  5. Thanks for the info, it's appreciated! So I was able to install 10.5.7 Vanilla with absolutely no problems, and updated it to 10.5.8. Given that worked well for me, I decided to go ahead and attempt to get 10.6 working. As per some of the tutorials out there (most of them are pretty simular) I restored the 10.6 image to another hard drive, and installed from there. I keep getting a kernel panic though, and I am unsure where to start my troubleshooting. Any suggestions?
  6. Hey guys, I just installed 10.6 on a second drive as per a couple of the manuals here. I currently have a working copy of 10.5.8 on my XPS. However, I keep getting a kernel panic. I'd like to troubleshoot it if I could, but I'm not really sure where to start. Can any experts here point me in the proper direction? Thanks!
  7. May I ask which tutorial you used to get snow working on your 1730? I have been unsuccessful so far. But as per your question, I have had good luck with nvkush in 10.5.x as someone else mentioned. Im going to try to get snow going and I will keep you posted if I come across a solution for our cards
  8. Hey guys, I've been running 10.5.6 for some time now, and used to run an older version back in the day. Never have I got Vanilla working and I'd like to do a reinstall and get that working if I can. I have tried previously and failed with kernel panics. Here are my specs on my laptop, can anyone verify that it should or should not be able to be vanilla? And just to clarify, I have to run vanilla right now to get 10.6 installed correct? http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.ph...ables#XPS_M1730
  9. great tutorial, screenshots and all! Quick question though, I'm running 10.5.6 on my Dell XPS M1730 laptop, but I haven't got it to run a Vanilla kernel yet. My specs are listed here, should I have it a go? http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.ph...ables#XPS_M1730
  10. Hey guys, I apologize if this is a bit of a noob question. I've been running 10.5.6 for a long time now on my XPS laptop, everything works great. Originally when I attempted to do the install way back when, I was unable to get it Vanilla working...mostly kernal panics. Unfortunately, I don't remember what kernel I DID get working (was mostly trail and error) but I'm just wondering if there is a modified kernel out there to run 10.6. I'm thinking perhaps its MoH 9.6.0 or something. I've tried doing a retail installation as per some of the tutorials around with Chamelon RC2, and the retail disc won't even boot I just get a Kernel panic from the Darwin 10.0.0. Does that mean I will need a modified kernel? I'm just wondering if I have any options? Sorry if I am unclear and making absolutely no sense, I'm still rather a noobie just getting back into it. Thanks! PS- these are basically my specs http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.ph...ables#XPS_M1730 Anyone know if it is compatible with a Vanilla kernel?
  11. Hiya Guys, Just wanted to post my results. I have tried it a couple different ways and get no luck. The mouse and keyboard just lock up and I have to reinstall the original kext. Laptop is a Dell XPS 1730 with a Synaptics trackpad. Not sure how you guys actually got this to work!
  12. Sup fellas. I apologize if this is covered in a different thread. I searched but found way too many results to narrow it down. I'm not a complete noob to osx, had it on my old laptop and now I am running the XXX distro of 10.5.6 on my Dell XPS 1730 laptop. Everything works great thanks to all the info here! The only issue I have is if I tell it to reboot or shutdown, OSX seems to close down but the power never shuts off. Only way I can restart or shut it down is to physically hold the power button in for 3 seconds or so. I can live with it I guess, but it makes restarting after changes here and there rather frusterating. Just thought I would check here to see if anyone has any fixes for this I should look into. Thanks!
  13. Can't get a GeForce 8700M GT 256MB to work

thanks for the update, it's appreciated. I have the 256 meg card and could never get qe/ci working. Did you get both cards working or just one? Full support?
  14. I have the EXSACT same problem, same error and same results as you. I am currently using a Dell XPS 1730. Kinda frustrating. I dont think it is common enough for people to want to touch on this yet. I am sure it will be looked into shortly. Looks like for most of us Dell users we are stuck with 10.5.1. You could always use the kalyway update
  15. Hey guys, just a quick question. I was really hoping to give the Kaly release a go since I liked the combo update and stuff it was great. However, I get this error everytime I try to boot off the cd. I cant even get to the installer on my laptop com.apple.driver.acpi_smc_platformplugin has immediate dependencies on both com.apple.kernel and com.apple.kpi components; use only one style Any ideas? Other non kaly releases seem to work ok :/
