Even if it doesn\u2019t show up in Finder, <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-gb\/guide\/disk-utility\/welcome\/mac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Disk Utility<\/a> can help you find out if the drive is at least detectable. Here\u2019s what to look for in a tool that can handle your situation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pick a tool that can handle the file systems you typically see on USB drives, like FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, and APFS. Personally, we\u2019d go with Disk Drill\u2014it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insanelymac.com\/blog\/disk-drill-review\/\">consistently gets great recovery results<\/a>, and unlike UFS Explorer, it\u2019s super easy to use, so anyone can jump in without any hassle.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how_to_create_a_backup_image_of_your_corrupted_usb_drive\"><\/span>How to Create a Backup Image of Your Corrupted USB Drive<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>Backup<\/strong> feature in Disk Drill, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleverfiles.com\/help\/dmg-iso-backup.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Byte-to-Byte Backup<\/strong><\/a>, creates a complete image of your USB drive. This image includes everything\u2014existing files, damaged files, deleted files, and any data left on the drive.<\/p>\n<div class=\"frame_bg frame_bg--danger\"><div class=\"frame_bg--title\"><\/div>\u26a0\ufe0f You\u2019ll need enough free space on your Mac\u2019s drive or another external drive to save this backup image. In fact, you\u2019ll need slightly more than the full size of your USB drive, not just the size of the used space, since the backup file captures everything on the drive.<\/div>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s how to create a backup image with Disk Drill:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to Disk Drill\u2019s official website, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleverfiles.com\/download.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">download the app<\/a>, and install it on your Mac. The free version lets you preview recoverable files, which can be helpful if you\u2019re evaluating your recovery options.<\/li>\n<li>Launch Disk Drill and plug in your corrupted USB drive. It\u2019s a great choice for businesses and IT pros.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how_to_recover_files_from_the_backup_image\"><\/span>How to Recover Files from the Backup Image<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Now that you have this backup image, no matter what happens next, you\u2019ll be able to recover files from it just as they were when you created it. It\u2019s like having a snapshot of your USB drive at that moment. You could go ahead and scan the original drive itself\u2014maybe things aren\u2019t as bad as they seem\u2014but we can\u2019t know that for sure. That\u2019s why we always recommend to make a backup and scan it instead. Just to be safe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s how to go through the recovery process from here:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Now that you see your created disk image in Disk Drill\u2019s main screen, click on <strong>Scan for Lost Data<\/strong>. This will start the process.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"border-gray aligncenter wp-image-8294 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insanelymac.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/disk-drill-att-backup.jpg\" alt=\"Click Search for Lost Data\" width=\"2394\" height=\"1612\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Click on <strong>Search for lost data<\/strong>. Disk Utility\u2019s <strong>First Aid<\/strong> tool can find and fix basic file system errors on your drive. It\u2019s usually the first repair option to try for a corrupted drive on macOS.<\/p>\n<div class=\"frame_bg frame_bg--success\"><div class=\"frame_bg--title\"><\/div>\ud83d\udccc <strong>Note.<\/strong> Sometimes it helps to run <strong>First Aid<\/strong> a couple of times. Occasionally, it may miss or only partially fix certain issues on the first try.<\/div>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s how to run First Aid to fix a corrupted flash drive on a Mac:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In the sidebar under <strong>External<\/strong>, find and select your USB drive. Double-check that you\u2019ve chosen the correct drive to avoid any accidental repairs on other devices.<\/li>\n<li>At the top of the Disk Utility window, click <strong>First Aid<\/strong>. A prompt will pop up explaining that First Aid will scan for errors and attempt to fix them.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"border-gray aligncenter wp-image-8298 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insanelymac.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/disk-utility-first-aid.jpg\" alt=\"Click on the First Aid button\" width=\"2272\" height=\"1478\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Run<\/strong> to start. Disk Utility will scan the drive for any errors. You\u2019ll see a progress bar, and Disk Utility will notify you if it finds any problems and whether it can fix them.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Once the scan is complete, Disk Utility will show a message with the results. If it found and fixed issues, try to access your USB drive in Finder to see if it\u2019s now okay.<\/p>\n<p>If First Aid can\u2019t repair the drive, the issue might be more serious\u2014such as severe file system corruption or hardware problems. At this point, we can move on to more advanced repair options.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"step_4_use_terminal_to_repair_the_usb_drive_on_your_mac\"><\/span>Step 4: Use Terminal to Repair the USB Drive on Your Mac<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If Disk Utility\u2019s First Aid didn\u2019t do the trick, Terminal offers a more advanced way to troubleshoot. Terminal commands can sometimes fix problems that Disk Utility can\u2019t handle.
