At first it doesn’t feel like a problem, as the extra shots just sit there in the Photos app, not bothering anyone. But the problem shows itself when the app begins to take up half of your iPad’s storage or when those extra copies get in the way of finding the picture you actually need. Fortunately, the fix doesn’t require any special skills. In this article, we’ll cover several methods to delete duplicate photos on your iPad.

Not everyone on our team owns an iPad, but those who do have tested these methods and confirmed they work. And since the process is the same on iPhones, you can treat this as a solution for both devices.

Why Duplicate Photos Appear on iPad

As we already mentioned above, duplicate photos on an iPad can quickly clutter your library, eat up storage, and turn photo management into a headache. But what actually causes them?

In fact, the cause is usually very simple — the same photo ends up being saved more than once, either through a download or an import. If it looks like duplicates appeared out of nowhere, the reality is that at some point the photo just got added twice. It happens to everyone.

Now, you might be thinking: “But what about the two identical photos I took on this iPad myself?” Well, here’s the thing — those are not true duplicates. On iPhone and iPad, a photo counts as a duplicate only if the two files are completely identical. Even the smallest difference in angle, lighting, pose, or other details makes the Photos app see them as separate pictures. Many people still think of those as duplicates, but technically they’re just look-alike shots.

Does that make deleting them harder? Not at all. And in the next section, we’ll show how easy it is to delete not only duplicates on your iPad, but also similar-looking photos.

How to Delete Duplicate Photos on iPad

Managing duplicate photos on your iPad can be done in three main ways: use the built-in Duplicates utility, look for them manually if the utility doesn’t catch everything, or turn to specialized third-party apps created for this task. For our team, the most convenient (and, as a bonus, the fastest) option turned out to be the apps, so we’ll start with them. We’re pretty sure that for most iPad users this will also be the most effective method.

Method 1: Use the iPad Cleaner App to Find and Delete Duplicates

Okay, let’s first explain why we put this method first, even though Apple already added the Duplicates utility. The reason is simple, as Apple’s tool only catches exact copies, which we discussed earlier, and ignores similar-looking photos. And those “almost the same” shots are exactly what most users call duplicates. Cleaner apps, on the other hand, detect both and let you delete them in just a few taps. That’s a big advantage.

Now, the obvious question is — which app should you use? The App Store is full of options, but not all of them use strong algorithms, and many are only paid after you’ve already installed them. To save time, we prepared a list of the best iPad cleaner apps. From that list, we’ll focus here on our top pick — Clever Cleaner. We’ve recommended it before, and for good reason, it’s completely free, has no ads to interrupt your cleanup, and doesn’t hide its best features behind paywalls.

Among many functions of Clever Cleaner, the most relevant one for this task is called Similars. It scans your iPad library for both exact duplicates and similar-looking photos. Once it finds them, it groups them together and automatically selects the “best shot,” marking the rest for deletion. Don’t like the app’s choice? You can change it anytime.

We’ll talk about other features of Clever Cleaner a little later, because they’re also worth paying attention to. But for now, let’s show you how you can use Clever Cleaner to remove duplicates and similar-looking photos from your iPad:

Download Clever Cleaner from the App Store (or use the QR code on their official website).

Open the app and grant full access to your photo library. The Similars tab opens by default.

You’ll see groups of duplicates and look-alikes, with the best ones already marked. If you agree with the selection, tap Smart Cleanup.

A preview window will appear so you can double-check. If you spot a photo you want to keep, tap Restore.

If you are satisfied, swipe the Slide to Delete bar and confirm.

For more control, open each group manually. The app highlights a “Best Shot,” but you can change it before deleting.

Then, tap Move to Trash for the ones you don’t need, or Skip All to leave the group untouched.

Finally, tap Empty Trash to delete the files. In a few taps, your iPad is cleared of duplicates and similar shots.

All deleted photos move to the Recently Deleted album in your Photos app. To free up iPad storage immediately, you’ll need to clear that album manually.

Besides Similars, Clever Cleaner comes with five other handy tools:

Heavies — shows the largest videos and photos in your library and gives you an easy way to review and remove them.

Compress — built right into the Heavies tool and lets you compress video files on your iPad. It’s handy when you want to free up space but don’t feel ready to delete the videos completely.

Swipe — sorts your photos by month so you can go through them quickly: swipe left to delete, swipe right to keep.

Screenshots — mirrors all your screenshots and lets you delete them at once. The nice part is that you can handle all media categories directly inside this app.

Lives — converts Live Photos into still images. You can delete the original or keep it on your device.

Each of these features works in a similar way, but if you want a deeper look at how they perform in practice, check out our review of Clever Cleaner.

Method 2: Use the Native iPad Utility to Remove Duplicate Photos

If you don’t want to rely on third-party apps (which are obviously more convenient), you can use the Duplicates utility that’s already built into the Photos app on the iPad. However, it’s worth noting a few peculiarities of how it works:

It’s available only on iPads running iPadOS 16 or later.

It detects only exact copies. Similar photos will not appear here, so it won’t help you delete them.

It may not show newly created duplicates right away. For example, if you duplicated an image a minute ago, it won’t appear in the list until your iPad finishes indexing. How long does that take? Only your device knows — sometimes a few moments, sometimes hours, and in some cases even days, especially after large imports, major iOS updates, or library migrations.

If that all sounds fine, here’s how to remove duplicates from your iPad with this utility:

Open the Photos app and go to the Collections tab.

Scroll down to Utilities and select Duplicates. You’ll see groups of duplicate photos and videos.

Review each group carefully. Then tap Select in the upper-right corner and Select All in the upper-right corner. This marks all duplicates in each group with blue checkmarks.

At the bottom, tap Merge (x), where x is the number of selected items.

Don’t let the name confuse you — the app will keep one copy in each group and move the rest to the Recently Deleted album. To free up space, you’ll need to clear that album as well.

But what if duplicates don’t appear in the utility, you don’t want to use an app, and you also don’t want to wait for indexing? In that case, there’s only one option left — search for them manually across your entire gallery. We’ll explain how to do that in the next method.

Method 3: Search for Duplicates in the Photos App Manually

The last method we’ll cover is the most time-consuming one (according to our team), but it still works: searching for and deleting duplicates on your iPad by hand. No utilities, no programs — just you and the Photos app. Sure, you already know how to open the app, scroll through your gallery, and tap the Delete button. But below are a few tips that can speed up this process.

The Photos app has a surprisingly handy keyword search feature, though many users overlook it. Apple built in AI algorithms that try to analyze your photos based on your query. The results aren’t always perfect, but they’re usually good enough to help track down similar shots.

To use this option:

Open the Photos app and tap the magnifying glass icon in the upper-right corner (available on both the Library and Collections tabs).

Enter a keyword (dog, cat, beach, whatever you want), then tap the blue search button. Your iPad will display the results it found.

Scroll through, tap Select in the upper right corner, and choose the photos you want to delete.

Tap the trash icon and confirm. Repeat as needed with different keywords.

Another way to make manual cleanup easier is to use the Years or Months view. This works well if you know when a bunch of duplicates or similar shots were created. For example, maybe friends sent you lots of group photos in April, or you took hundreds of vacation shots in June.

To try this:

Open the Photos app and go to the Library tab.

At the top, switch between Years or Months.

Review the photos shown for the selected period and delete any extras.

If that’s not enough, the Collections tab offers even more ways to filter photos:

People & Pets — groups photos by faces or pets that Apple recognizes.

Media Types — splits your library into selfies, panoramas, portraits, Live Photos, and more.

Utilities — besides Duplicates, you’ll also find tools like Map, which shows where your photos were taken (if location services were enabled).

If you’ve never explored these sections before, it’s worth spending a little time there. They won’t magically delete duplicates for you, but they will give you new ways to organize, browse, and manage your library. And once you get used to them, navigating your photo collection becomes much simpler.

Conclusion

Now you know how simple it can be to find and delete duplicates on your iPad — whether with the help of apps or by doing it manually. What’s next to stop them from coming back? For exact duplicates, the only real solution is to keep an eye on what you download so the same photo doesn’t land in your library twice. As for similar-looking shots, the easiest habit is to review them right after taking pictures and delete the ones you don’t need.

In this article, we focused on duplicate removal, but the Photos app also contains other categories that often eat up storage.
