might get flagged by detectors? Or are you on the other side, where you need to check someone’s writing or a document for AI traces but don’t know how to start?

This is all easily resolved, so in this article, we’ll walk you through some methods that show you how to detect AI-generated text. You’ll see exactly what to pay attention to when reviewing text, as well as which tools can help you spot AI-generated text quickly.

As a team of editors and blog authors, we know first-hand how important it is to spot AI-generated text, so all of these methods have been tested in real scenarios, and you can trust that the approaches we share actually work.

How AI Text Generators Work and Why We Can Still Recognize AI Writing?

Everyone has heard of ChatGPT or Google Gemini by now — chances are you’ve even tried one of them to draft an email, outline a report, or just play around. At their core, these tools have been trained on massive collections of text and rely on predicting what word is likely to come next. That’s how they manage to produce language that reads smoothly and looks organized. In fact, sometimes the output seems cleaner than what most people would come up with on the first try. It’s quick, it’s polished, and at first glance, it can pass for something written by hand.

But if AI learns from human language, why can we still identify AI-generated text? The reason is that prediction leaves behind certain patterns. Machine-written text often plays it safe, sticking to common phrasing, balanced tone, and repetitive sentence structures. Humans, on the other hand, make small mistakes, add personality, shift style mid-paragraph, and reference lived experiences. Those imperfections act like fingerprints of authenticity.

Here’s how the contrast usually looks:

🙋🏻‍♂️ Human Writing Traits

🤖 Machine (AI) Writing Traits

Personal tone, emotion, subjective bias

Neutral, polished, overly balanced

Typos, abrupt phrasing, style changes

Consistent structure, repetitive flow

Creative jumps, humor, unpredictability

Safe word choices, formula-like patterns

References to real events or experiences

Possible “hallucinations” or fake details

Is it Possible to Make It Harder to Identify AI-Generated Text

Before we go to the actual methods for detecting AI writing, it’s worth stopping for a moment to ask another question: can you make AI writing harder to recognize? The answer is pretty simple — yes, you can. There are tricks that help the text sound less mechanical and closer to something a person would write, instead of looking like it came straight out of a generator.

🙂 That said, this section is more for readers who landed here because they want to make their AI-generated work look less obvious. If you’re on the side of checking other people’s writing and catching them in a bit of AI “cheating,” feel free to skip ahead to the detection methods.

The first option is to rewrite what the AI gave you. Yes, literally — take the draft and rework it as you would have written it yourself. If you took the time to create a strong prompt instead of just typing “write me a diploma,” the output can serve as a decent starting point. You can then adapt it to your personal style, whether that’s the voice of your blog, your university paper, or a company report. Of course, this takes more effort and thought, but it works.

If rewriting isn’t your path, there’s another option: AI humanizers. These are tools built to do the reverse job — they adjust machine text to sound more human, fixing typical AI patterns and word choices. There are plenty of such apps online, each with different terms of use, but the principle is the same. One we recently tested and can recommend is Clever AI Humanizer (the same developer known for Disk Drill and Clever Cleaner). It’s free, has no ads or hidden paywalls, and most importantly, it actually helps bypass both manual checks and automated detectors (which we will discuss below).

Here’s how to use it:

Search for Clever AI Humanizer in your browser or click this link.

Copy and paste your AI-generated text into the input box.

Click the green Humanize AI button and wait a few seconds.

Your reworked text will appear below — copy it back into your document and then run an AI check using the methods we’ll cover later in this article.

📌 Please keep in mind that even after humanizing, no tool can guarantee a 100% bypass. Every AI detector works differently, and some are so inconsistent that they may even flag texts written entirely by humans as AI. Treat humanizers as helpful tools, not as a magic solution, and always be prepared for mixed results.

8 Methods of How to Tell if Something is AI-Generated

Okay, let’s move on to the methods of how to tell if writing is AI-generated. You might expect there to be dozens of options, especially since the AI field is booming and new tools seem to appear every day. In reality, it all comes down to two approaches: manually checking certain facts in the text or using specialized AI checkers, which we already mentioned briefly above. So, let’s get started.

Method 1: Talk to the Author of the Work

Nothing beats real communication. If you suspect that a piece of work was written with the help of AI, one of the most direct ways to check is simply to talk to its author. This could be a face-to-face meeting, a quick phone call, or even a short exchange by email or messenger. The format doesn’t matter much — what matters is asking enough questions to see whether they actually know the subject.

If the author genuinely wrote the piece themselves, answering these questions won’t be a problem. They’ll be able to explain details, recall sources, and describe their process. But if the work was mostly generated by AI, the answers are likely to sound vague, inconsistent, or superficial.

Obviously, this method is mainly useful for reviewers, managers, or teachers who have direct contact with the author. If that’s not your situation, no worries, just move on to the next method.

Method 2: Look at the General Style of the Written Work

One more thing you can do is pay attention to the overall style of the text. When a draft hasn’t been worked on or the final version hasn’t been touched up, the writing often comes across as stiff and mechanical. It reads smoothly on the surface, but there’s something off — almost as if the text had been decoded from Morse code rather than written by a person.

It’s hard to explain this in words, so let’s add an example below.

🤖 AI-like style:

This tool is useful for many tasks. It helps organize information. It also helps save time. Overall, it is a helpful tool for work.

🙋🏻‍♂️ Human-like style:

This tool helps you stay organized, it is useful when you want to arrange items neatly. It helps you finish regular jobs quickly, so your work day is smoother.

As you can see, the AI example circles around the same point, repeats words, and feels lifeless. The human version explains the same idea in a more natural way, with variety and flow. That difference in tone is often enough to tell the two apart.

Method 3: Distortion of Facts

Even with updates to all the well-known AI generators, the problem of fact distortion has not disappeared. Yes, it has become a little better, but AI still often confuses or misstates things that could be checked with a quick search. You’ve probably seen the news about how GPT can name the wrong President of the United States — that same issue shows up in longer texts as well. Now imagine the damage this kind of distortion can cause in technical or exact sciences, where precision matters most.

That’s why both the author and the reviewer should read carefully and run their own fact-checks. Relying on AI text without verification is risky and can undermine the credibility of the whole work.

Method 4: Excessive Use of Typical AI Words

One of the most effective ways to recognize AI writing is to analyze the text for so-called “stop words.” These are words and phrases that appear again and again in machine-generated drafts. Typical examples include ensure, crucial, deep delve into, and a whole range of similar expressions that sound polished but overused. On Reddit you can even find long discussions where users collect and share entire lists of these words. If you want to study the pattern more closely, it’s worth checking those threads.

In most cases, when a person writes on their own, they naturally vary vocabulary. Authors pick synonyms, rephrase, or adjust their wording depending on the context. AI, on the other hand, tends to repeat the first term its algorithm produced. That’s why a draft generated by AI may end up with ten or more repetitions of the same word scattered throughout the text.

Please note, though, that spotting a few of these words doesn’t automatically prove a piece is AI-generated. People use them too. The difference is in the pattern: in AI writing these terms appear systematically, almost like a fingerprint, while in human writing they usually show up more sporadically.

Method 5: Pay Attention to Punctuation

Punctuation is another clue when you want to check if something is AI-generated. Sounds silly at first, right? But it’s not. People make small slips, they miss a comma, add an extra period, or skip quotation marks ( and that’s normal, unless you’re dealing with legal or highly technical writing). AI loves to make everything look “perfect.” In fact, it often goes too far. AI text often looks overly tidy. Commas land exactly where they should, sentences line up too evenly, and you’ll notice extra dashes slipped in for no real reason. The result doesn’t feel natural, more like punctuation has been overdone.

And just to be clear, please, don’t call a work AI just because the writer used a proper long dash (—) instead of a simple hyphen (-). That’s normal punctuation, not proof of a machine.

Method 6: Look at the Structure of Lists, If Any

AI generators often produce lists in a peculiar, formulaic way. If you don’t go back and edit them, it’s usually pretty easy to spot. The structure tends to follow a pattern — A generalizing word: then a short explanation that often repeats the same idea. For example:

You can see the problem that the explanation just circles back to the heading without adding real substance. What’s even stranger is that AI sometimes doesn’t correct this style even if you ask for more detailed output in the prompt. That’s why it’s always best to go through lists yourself, expand on the points, and make them feel more natural.

Method 7: Check for Technical (and Not Only) Details

We have already talked about the distortion of facts, what about the details in the work? AI generators cannot work with details unless you write them yourself. This applies to any topic, be it history, chemistry, physics, and so on. In plain text, it is easy to miss this, however, if the work contains some instructions, guides, or a description of your own experience, certain actions, names of functions or buttons will be described incorrectly with a probability of 90%.

It is difficult for us to give an example here which will be understandable to everyone, but here is how we tested the GPT for writing instructions for using the Shortcuds program to find large video files on the iPhone.

As you can see, GPT suggested choosing a file size filter, but the program doesn’t even have such an option. Accordingly, all the other steps it proposed were already pointless.

And this is just our example, but in other cases and areas, it will be the same. So if you want to know how to tell if something is written by AI, check the details. If you don’t want anyone to know that you used AI, then refine everything thoroughly.

Method 8: Detect AI Writing with Online Checker

Another way to check whether something was created by artificial intelligence, which is simpler than manual identification, is to use a specialized online checker. These tools are built on machine learning and statistical models that learn from lots of text, including writing by people, also writing created by AI. They use complex algorithms to spot clues that a text came from artificial intelligence, like sentences that sound too similar, common word choices, or repeating linking words.

That said, no tool is perfect. If a checker marks a text as AI-generated, it doesn’t mean with 100% certainty that a human didn’t write it. Every service has an identification error rate. Sometimes, a piece of writing by a student, blogger, or journalist can “look” too consistent and get flagged. This is important to keep in mind because treating such tools as a final authority can lead to false positives.

Another limitation is that these detectors can often be fooled with relatively little effort. For example, if you run raw AI output through an AI humanizer, the result can bypass many popular checkers. A few edits, synonym swaps, or simply restructuring sentences are sometimes enough to confuse the algorithms.

To show this in action, we ran the sample text (screenshot below) through ZeroGPT. The result clearly highlighted sections as AI-generated. This supports what we already found manually: the text shows repetition, stop words, dashes, and generic descriptions.

To push the test further, we decided to conduct an experiment and passed the same text through Clever AI Humanizer. The result significantly decreased from almost 100% AI probability in ZeroGPT to just 13%. We think this number would be even smaller with a bigger sample of text.

Final Thoughts

Well, now you know how to check if something is AI-generated, no matter which side you’re on — the author or the reviewer. Are the methods enough for this? More than enough. Still, even using all of them together will never give you a 100% guarantee. That’s because both AI generators and AI detectors keep training on human work and then improving on top of themselves. The cycle blurs the line so much that even a text written fully by a person can sometimes be flagged as AI.

Which method is the best? Honestly, nobody knows. The fastest approach is, of course, to use online AI checkers, but you need to trust the tool. Some of them are so inconsistent that they’ve flagged constitutions as 100% AI, so keep that in mind. On the other hand, if you’ve got experience and a sharp eye, simply rereading the text can be enough. When a piece hasn’t been written by the author directly (or at least revised and being dropped raw from a generator), the AI traces are usually obvious.

We hope this helped you get a clearer view of the topic. If you’re an author, don’t overuse AI tools — they’re not a substitute for your own style. And if you’re a reviewer, don’t rush to call a text AI-generated just because you spotted one “ensure” or a single dash (—).

FAQ

Can AI-generated text be detected with 100% certainty?

No, you cannot be 100% sure unless you wrote the text yourself and know its origin.
