Full Version: iPhones in UK Now Selling For a Reduced Price

The 8GB iPhone on the O2 website has been reduced by £100 to £169 until June 1. This further reinforces speculation a new iPhone (3G maybe) is soon to be released. For those who know the currencies, that means that an 8GB iPhone in the UK is only $331.50. That is a full $67.50 cheaper than the $399 version here.

The Apple UK site however still is selling it at the original £269 which I'm sure can't last.

Many people are now purchasing the iPhone at the reduced price, simply to unlock it for another network.

Just got mine, the guy at Carphone Warehouse said they were selling on a par with launch day. Now what do you folks recommend to activate it?
benwinship
The 16gb version is still full price. Maybe the 16gb version is selling better?

Pwnage Tool for Mac. Pwn your phone, customize your 1.1.4 .ipsw for activation and jailbreak, and you're set to restore through iTunes and everything be setup perfectly right

I just got my iphone from the us today, 500$ with current exchange rate is about 314 euros, now thats a bargain

I think they will get rid of the 8GB phones =) Everybody want's 16GB now xD
SpeedfreaK
woooow, dude, 169 pond is only 209 EURO! wtf! so cheap!
defenitely going to england!
Azurael
Ordered.

I never thought I'd want a non-3G iPhone, but this was too cheap to pass up. I recently gave my 60GB 5G iPod to my girlfriend and I'm sick of the horrible tunes she's left on her old 4GB Mini that's plugged into my car stereo (it's a Kenwood iPod direct control unit - hopefully it should work with the iPhone too...) And besides, my HTC TyTN has been causing some real headaches lately. It will now be a dedicated TomTom machine, and even that's only gonna last until a decent GPS navigation system for the iPhone which supports proper bluetooth GPS receivers comes out.

Cheers for that. Took me a while to find the 1.1.4 fw, but all set to go later on. Anyone recommend a decent case? I like the look of the Shieldzone one, anyone use this?

Yep, you buy it (no cash sales, so you have to give card details/ address) then you take it away promising to activate it through iTunes. Got mine, will pwn it tomorrow, and hopefully all should be good.

Anyone know how to circumvent the Geo-ip O2 site? When i try to surf to http://shop.o2.co.uk/ i get:

Thanks for visiting the O2 Online Shop
Unfortunately, we are unable to sell to countries outside the UK.

I have a few friends in the UK, so I could get one through them; I'd just like to see the site (or sight?) wink.gif

Here's a list of UK proxy's: http://www.xroxy.com/proxy-country-GB.htm
Some are real slow, but it works to fool O2.
benwinship
Does anyone know if the actual shops also have this offer on? I dont like the idea of not having it straight away biggrin.gif

EDIT : I just realised that this makes the iPhone cheaper than the iTouch.
EddM
I just got my iPhone a week or two ago. Makes sense that they would cut the price just after I get one... sad.gif

Thx, tho I didn't try using a proxy wink.gif Instead i used this site:
http://www.zend2.com , which worked well enough without the need to go about messing with programs and suchlike.
So for anyone who's interested, the zend2 works nicely.

It's soo tempting... I need a new phone, and I could replace my current 4GB Creative Zen with it in one go... Tho I use linux a lot, which can be slightly problematic.

Hey, so you buy an iPhone in an O2 store, without signing any contract? You activate it, or not, at home? Do they have iPhones 8GB in all 02 stores in England?

Thank you,

Benjamin.
benwinship
Yes, you buy the phone in the O2 shop or Carphone Warehouse for £169, then you just tell them that you are going to activate it at home through iTunes, then unlock it.
Bench
And what can they do to you if you don't activate it, can they like sue you? biggrin.gif

They can refuse warranty, other than that what are they going to sue you for? Breach of a contract that you never signed?

That's what I thought, I'm getting one biggrin.gif.

Thank you very much,

Benjamin.
Bench
What about ordering online from carphone warehouse, is there any difference with avoiding the contract?
Bench
Anyone? Please!

I really need to know, when does the contract start, when you order it online and give your credit card number or when you get the phone, and activate it through iTunes?

Thank you!
EddM
I don't know about Carphone Warehouse, but the above certainly is true about buying from O2 (I advise against dealing with Carphone Warehouse personally, their aggressive sales technique is on the same level as a used car dealership and shows very little respect for their customers).

What you've said is true, however let's not overlook the point that you do in fact agree to a contract with Apple that you will not use it with any other carrier upon buying it. This may also be so when buying the handset from O2 or CF -- nobody ever asks, how else will you know?

So you think it's better to order online from O2?
benwinship
Forgot to post about it, bought mine on Friday from the CPW, had no problems getting them to sell me it, opted out of all the sh*t they were trying to sell me and took it home and pwned it.
Bench
You think It's the same ordering online from them? You pay for the iPhone, unlock it, and avoid the contract?
Embio
if something went wrong with one *touch wood* could Apple refuse service if you claim it was originally French and hence unlocked?
SpeedfreaK
i think they can see where you bought the iphone (with the serial number of something), so you can't claim it was french if it isnt tongue.gif
hanzoh
Yeah, I can confirm that, at least that's what I experienced in a German T-Mobile store, they enter your IMEI and see that it isn't from them.
