Can I put a stick of ram in the second ram slot without any ram being in the first?

i have a GA-945GCM-S2C

I ask this because my cpu cooler is too big (actually heat pipes from it) and it is covering the first slot. if I turn it it is "not optimal" and is over some capacitors I do not want to blow....
