I just got 10.4.4 on my intel pc biggrin.gif
but when I logon, It's really difficult to see anything, I see just gray colors everywhere, and I can't read anything
I'm able to use the konsole and to read/write in the console
I tried to login with -x -v but I the same problem is going on
what can I do? do anyone has any suggestion?
Hagar
youve got the 865 4-bit greyscale disease, by the sound of it.. older solutions were based around the 830 kext but Im not sure if its even included in 10.4.4
domino
are you using the on-board intel graphics? That may be the problem since intel video cards aren't support any longer after 10.4.1.

are we talking about th 865 chipset based on the topic or are we talking about the i9xxx which I don't see in the topic. it's oviouse that the 865 chipset will not have a gma graphics card.

Darwin 8.01 has OS X compatible x86 drivers, but if there's not one on that distribution that can make the 865 do better graphics, that's all s/he wrote.

Sometimes all you need do is enter BIOS and change the AGP or video display window/buffer/memory to maximum and try again.
domino
there hasn't been since 10.4.1 and we had to change the device ID to the one compiled for Intel Graphics and the DTK. As of 10.4.3 and above, no one has yet either attempted to create or got any of the darwin or tk's driver to work. Anyway, it was a pain to have to boot into windows, then back to Tiger just to be able to get the correct res. If anyone willing to get the frame buffer or wrapper support for Mac, that would be great. All they have to do is try to get the info from the Linux wrapper. easier said than done though.

Linux is better than Windows for making crusty old hardware look and run well. Moreso than OS X, definitely.

Problem is, the computer industry itself (the bleeding edge) wants to obsolete things quickly, so you need a new CPU every 18 months (which almost is a true-to-life fact), and a new display card, a new sound card, a new hard drive... you get the picture.

Unless like many Apple users, you cling to your rapidly aging, increasingly incapable of keeping up with the media-and-filesize rich Internet, and begin to think maybe Television entertainment isn't all THAT bad... StarTrek.gif
domino
The problem is not Linux, the problem is the industry does not want to release the source to open firmware so can create new drivers for newer hardware for the open OS community. for example ATI, when was the last GPL driver source released? That's the reason the 9800's and above are stuck with half descent fglrx drivers because ATI simply refuse to release he source. Which is well within there rights...

boot your machine this way set your primary boot device to your dvd rom let that boot up your osx disc. Dont press anything and it will start osx and you should be ok.

Oh so that would explain why in 10.4.1 I had mulitple resolutions and now I am stuck with one and no QE?

I was getting ready to sel off my 865 and now I know I will.

So I guess next cheapest upgrade would be a I915 w/ 775 socket and GMA 900?
I know my board and these boards share the same memory so that is one less cost.

Any suggestions? I have seen some good cheap I945 boards for cheap w/ GMA 950?

Still not sure?

PS I wouldn't say the I865 is crusty hardware yet, just aging gracefully like fine wine.

well, I just got a 10.4.4 backup (I wanted to try osx, I never used mac and I want to buy one but they are very expensive here in argentina, U$S 1500!!! while a normal pc is about U$S 400).
I did a lspci -l to see all the info about the video card

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated Graphics Controlle
r (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Subsystem: Dell: Unknown device 017a
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
Memory at e8000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=128M]
Memory at feb80000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512K]
I/O ports at ed98 [size=8]
Expansion ROM at <unassigned> [disabled]
Capabilities: [d0] Power Management version 1

I will try to install 1.4.3 from the dvd to see what happens

I just do what you told me, I turned my memory for video from 128 mb to 256 mb and the aperture size from 1 mb to 8 mb, I-m posting this from safari biggrin.gif

wow, I'm just a newbie, I don't know what all that means.

- available resolution and refresh rates - I have 1024*768 resolution

- QE/CI availability - I don't know what's QE/CI, I'm reading an osx manual and the forum, I will tell you later about that

- no garbled screen when rebooting - no, the screen is great when rebooting or anything, I can also see videos with the itunes and I can see 3d graphics with the protector screen, until now every thing is working great

- you don't have to boot into windows and back to Tiger - I just recover an 10.4.4 image into the first partition (/dev/hda1), in the same disk I have windows xp (/dev/hda2) ad linux (/dev/hda3) and I'm using lilo too choose an O.S., but at first I just installed osx and linux and the mbr was clean and I was booting into osx without any problems

- did you edit any files - No, I did not, I just recover a norton ghost image that I found in piratesbay

- screen of the sys prefs that shows your graphic info - How can I get an screen in os x? I will post you all that info once I finish reading about the manual, kernel, etc. (in a couple of hours)

sorry but I'm really a nb in osx, thank you

ps: I have a Dell OptiPlex 170L

ps2: The only thing that isn't working right now is the sound card

that's ok. i'm sure you'll find out what Quartz Extreme and Core Image is soon enough. Lets make this simple.

Lookin in System Preferences, then click on Display. Do you have multiple resulution and multiple refresh rates?

Go to the desktop and click on the Apple on your toolbar. Then click on the "About this Mac". A dialog box should apear. Click on "More Info". Another box should appear. Look and click on the "Graphics Display" on the right hand side. Inthe main box, you should have something similar to this:

CODE
Type:    VGA-Compatible Controller
  Bus:    PCI
  VRAM (Total):    128 MB
  Vendor:    ATI (0x1002)

No, I just have 1024*786, and I don't see any refresh rates, in Colors it says millons, and in refresh Rate it says n/a
