Test of door opening :

Next step, mechanical opening system.

In the meantime, finishing installing LCS inside Mac Pro case :

Baudouin
Hardly incidently I start my Hackintosh. I bought the huge Zalman copper cooler fan for my Geforce graphic card 6600

and realize that I could not more close my G4 MDD case. I got the idea to take the PSU outside the case and attach it underneath. The temp droped and I had more space to install enventually an extra fifth HDD inside.
Afterwards, I fancy to move my MDD into a G5 case, watercooled it and in between start to read aqua-mac.com and later wanted to Hack the Tosh. That's how everything started.

You can see the pictures and some comments here : http
://aquamac.proboards106.com/index.cgi?...amp;thread=130

For the watercooling, I had to mod the plate of the MDD Heatsink to adapt it to the waterblock :
http://forum.macbidouille.com/index.php?ac...m&album=238

Here I start the mod of the G5 case for the MDD:
http://forum.macbidouille.com/index.php?ac...m&album=239

I wanted to keep the original door opening system from the previous G3, G4 PPC case. I used four panels and finally got it right . Now my Hackintosh is inside the G5 case and the LCS inside a Mac Pro case .

I think it's harder to modify a G4 case then a G5. Good job.

Thanks for the compliment Viper.

i hate to clarify but its WAY easier to do up g4's and g3's

macpro's and g5 towers are harder.

also i wouldnt even comment on this thread cuase of the nature of how everything turned out... like $hit, but i had to add in my 2centsfinal.gif .

if you want challenge stick a hackintosh with core2duo cpu into a g4 powermac cube, and make it all work.

I just wanted to explain how I came to mod a Hackintosh in a G5 case.
About challenge I dare yo to mod the heatsink from the G4 to dapt the waterblock as I did.

I finally got the way to connect the original back fans from the G5 case. Hereby are some pictures to show how. In fact the are six cables, two doubles connecting both fans and four singles two per fan. Between the 4 combinations ony one will work : one double to the yellow wire (12V) , one double to black wire (neutral) and one of the singles to the red one (5V), the other single does not need to be connected, it is for the tours per min counter.I start with the doubles in position and tried one single at a time, did not work, then switch the position of the doubles and tried again the single wire and the fan started. Did the same for the other fan and then connect the two fans on the same plug, the two singles wires on the same connector

The two first were taken with a mobile

I took these with a digi cam, you can see the double wires on the left side connected to the yellow and black wires and the two singles on the right connected to the red wire, the two others singles are not connected.

Edit : I was reading what I wrote and pictured before and realized that I had first unplugged the wires. I use a spare couple of fans to make the connections with the wires in the original positions :

With the plug in this position, connectors numbered from 1 to 6 starting from the bottom , the connections are :

1 to n/a or black : RPM fan A
2 to red : 5V fan A
3 to yellow : 12V both fans
4 to black : neutral both fans
5 to n/a or black : RPM fan B
6 to red : 5V fan B

I would like to thank CZ*DarkLight[, starting at post ?80 http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...525&st=60CZ for his detailed and well picturized "how to dismantle the case ", that help me a lot and save me time to take out the upper plate to rivet the support for the MDD's HDD's under the optical drive in the G5 case.

At this time I was thinking to install the PSU inside the case with the support plate from the G4 case. But it was to close to the MOBO when the door was closed

Finally with My Hack the Tosh, I used the case of the G4 MDD PSU to install the PC PSU.Inspired by the pictures from TribesMan http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...=4525&st=40. I start by cutting the PC PSU case taking out the 120 mm fan and kept the bottom to which the PSU is screwed and cut the G4 MDD PSU case to insert two 80mm VERAX fans, put the PC CPU inside the MDD case and mod two pieces of mesh panel to cover the PSU

edit 06/05/08 : I forgot to mention that I have to bore the original hole to make it wider because the G4 MDD power button is bigger than the G5 one's. Did it gently an slowly to avoid any extern damage to the alu front panel.

I just got my second G5 HDD tray. I will attach it to the support from the G4 MDD which I previously rived under the DVD drive .
http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?act...st&id=24134

Edit : done but took more time that I thought, because the G5 cage is wider than this from the G4 MDD, so I could screw on one side but have to rived the other side. I cut the upper plate from the G4 MDD HDD cage and attach it at the top of the G5 HDD cage.

Edit : sorry I forgot to thank "Macprodan & Torque3" who deserve the Credit for the "Quick Look" look!

Still have to delete the "Unknow" after the Proc speed.

Edit :

In the meantime I change in About this Mac, the processor field with Core2 Quad @ 3.28Ghz(2.4Ghz) , which are real speed and (original speed).

In System Profiler I have changed nothing, quite happy with the infos, included real Proc speed :

Machine Name: Mac
Machine Model: 965P-DS3P
Processor Name: Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU @
Processor Speed: 3.27 GHz
Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
Processor Features: FPU VME DE PSE TSC MSR PAE MCE CX8 APIC SEP MTRR PGE MCA CMOV PAT PSE36 CLFSH DS ACPI MMX FXSR SSE SSE2 SS HTT TM SSE3 MON DSCPL VMX EST TM2 SSSE3 CX16 TPR PDCM

I have been playing around with the infos I got from Aquamac. My last version of About this Mac and System Profiler :

Baudouin
As usual, I was too fast to try out and did not read carefully what Aquamac had written.
My SystemProfiler is now :

Hardware Overview:

Machine Name: Intel inside G5 case
MOBO Gigabyte: 965P-DS3P
Processor Name: Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU Q6600
Original 2.4 GHz overclocked @: 3.27 GHz
Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache: 2x4 Mb
Graphic Card: Nvidia GeForce 7900 GTO 512 Mb
Ram Memory: OCZ Flex DDR2 @ 800 Mhz overclocked @ 913 Mhz WaterCooled
Overclocked Bus Speed: 1.46 GHz
Boot ROM Version: Hack.88Z.int.0sh.061193037 (Award Software International, Inc.)

Now I have understood. You can change anything you want. As long as you replace the left column first separate by ; and then replace the right column.
For example to change the seventh line, from :

Processor Features: FPU VME DE PSE TSC MSR PAE MCE CX8 APIC SEP MTRR PGE MCA CMOV PAT PSE36 CLFSH DS ACPI MMX FXSR SSE SSE2 SS HTT TM SSE3 MON DSCPL VMX EST TM2 SSSE3 CX16 TPR PDCM

to Graphic Card : Nvidia Geforce 9700 GTO 512 Mb

I have changed : platform_cpu_features = "Processor Features";

to platform_cpu_features = "Graphic Card";"FPU VME DE PSE TSC MSR PAE MCE CX8 APIC SEP MTRR PGE MCA CMOV PAT PSE36 CLFSH DS ACPI MMX FXSR SSE SSE2 SS HTT TM SSE3 MON DSCPL VMX EST TM2 SSSE3 CX16 TPR PDCM"="Nvidia Geforce 9700 GTO 512 Mb";

For those who are interessed, this the full procedure written by Aquamac:

I was happylly surprised to get the original cables with the second G5 HDD Cage. I modded four double plugs to power the four HDD with the cables. One is the non used double 12V from my Power Supply which fire up the Proc at start-up, because I am using the one with eight pins. The three others come from old PSU's for PC soldered with the wires from molex plugs. The two black molex plugs of the HDD cables will be used to power the internal fans, upper fans and back fans.

The back Audio is working but not the Front panel. I checked the forum : [How To] Solutions for Audio Problems, A Compilation (http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=34075), and installed the drivers without succes .

I wanted first to transfert my MDD into a G5 case to have more space, but with the G4 opening door system too. I changed my mind and decided to go for a Hackintosh after having read aqua-mac.com and discovered insanelymac.com.
Presently my Hack is working and I am busy to watercooling everything I can except the Power supply.

I am thinking not to use the original G4 door anymore but the G5 door and to use a transparant outside door.

But why ? For the fun and G4 MDD nostalgy to open the inside door and see the Mobo attached to it . And because it is a challenge to make it work. biggrin.gif
amantheboy
you know what would be sick making the G5 door opening the G4 door but motorize so when you pull the latch it will come down on its own now that would be nice.
Baudouin
Amantheboy08,
That's the kind of crazy idea I love. biggrin.gif I will find out what the cost for such a mechanism.
HacOSXuser
i think if you make some sort of transparent door that morotized out like the g4 one but still kept the G5 look to it without any part of the G4 door ( liek you have nailed to the bottom of the G5 case) would look amazing.
Baudouin
HacOSXuser,

This is a really crazy challenge. In fact presently, the tranparent Mobo plate is nailed to the inside of the case and the G4 door is attached as for the G4 case, in the middle with the apple and at the top with two screws.

G4 door closed :

G4 door open with view onto the acrylic plate :

Acrylic plate up with Mobo attached onto a PC Mobo plate I had:

But now the Mobo is attached directly onto the acrylic plate with 23mm standoffs

Now I was thinking to link one outside transparent door with the G5 metal door reduced at the opening dimension and make the two open together. Now to motorize the opening door would be insane. I will try that. wacko.gif
HacOSXuser
the only thing i dont like is how the G4 door(obv) doesnt cover the entire opening. leaving the top shelf and the corners visible. take the original G5 door. cut a hole in it the size of the G4 door. put them toogether. and make it motorize out. that. would be an amazing mod.
DiaboliK
i still cant keep any food in my stomach while i read/look through this thread.
it just seems it just wants to purge itself for some unknown reason.

I agree with you, that's why in the beginning I was thinking to make a frame around the G4 door to cover all the open space, but it seems to difficult to realize. And lately I thought to use a cut G5 door instead of the G4 door which would cover also the space around the G4 door and I am testing a two pieces of mesh panel to cover the top shelf in the same way it is done in the Mac Pro case. This mesh panels will cover the Optical drive, HDD fan and the top HDD's.And for the outside door I will use a transparent smokey acrylic panel.

That's remind me the time I sold my G3 W/B to buy back on eBay all the parts to rebuild one completely inside an fully acrylic case for PC, first to see if I could do it and secondly because this case has blue lights coming out of the edges of the panels like fibre lights . Just for the fun my G3 White/Blue was really blue !!!

I got the same reactions like yours. tongue.gif OK. So what, you don't like it. Fine for me, you get sick and your GF, you meant G5 I guess?, get anorexic. Keep her safe away from mine, otherwise she will be contaminated. rolleyes.gif
Baudouin
One more thing : here comes a changement.
I got the Mac Pro case from Hally_57 in a very good status from the inside, a pitty that the feet are wrongly bended, but they are not broken.
I will use this second case as housing for the LCS for the Hackintosh and later (question of budget) install four extra HDD's. I will replace the Thermaltake Liquid Cooling with the original rad and Delphi pump from a G5 dual 2,7GHz System with the huge CPU fans and the double G5 marked alu cover.
Baudouin
Some pictures :

The external part whith the hands and feet seperated from the inner housing. The feet are definetely wrongly bended. I will try to get them in better position.

The upper hands are in good position.

The original G5 CPU fans and the LCS rad from a watercooled dual 2,7GHz are attached inside the inner housing with the original double G5 cover.

On the right side, you see the two fans I attached at the back of the case. The upper one is a spare Thermaltake for watercooling which will cool down the four extra HDDs for the Hackintosh and at the bottom, the original Mac Pro PSU fan which will help to cool down the rad.
I will hide the PSU area with a bended piece of mesh panel as I have done for the upper side of the Hack, see futher pictures. I will do the same to hide the left side of the CPU fans wher the water pump wil come, at first the Thermaltake I am using now and later when fixed, the original Laing and the right side of the rad to cover the fans and maybe one piece for the space between the bottom of the HDD's and the top of the CPU fans and rad.

Edit 30/07/08 : the two upper parts are now covered :

Because I will use the nervouschimp method to connect the Mobo connectors to the back of the case, I had to move the Mobo closer to the front of the case and so to detach the third and fourth HDD's and to move them to the Mac Pro case. You can see how I used the upper face from the MDD HDD tray combined to the G5 HDD's tray to attach them under the upper part of the case.

I have made a new acrylic mobo tray which cover the entire opening, the top shelf is covered by two pieces of mesh panel. When the mobo tray is closed, it shows a 3D apple logo.
I have cut an acrylic door as wide as the original G5 door.
I have attach them together. The apple logo seems then to float between the two panels.
As I have been playing around with mesh panel, I will cut a panel with the shape of the apple logo centered onto the acrylic door leaving the floating apple visible, and covering with mesh panel the outer sides, up, down, left and right. why ? In fact to hide the holes made to attach the outside acrylic door to the frame used to fixe the original G5 door with the latch.
Still working on, pictures will follow.

Here you can see the original apple frame used to lock the door with the latch. The external acrylic panel is attached to the mobo tray by using four cpu's standups shorted and screwed. It is not obvious on these picts, but the frame is cut at the bottom part, when I realized that some space was necessary for the opening movement of the door. So I will cut the door in two parts, the down one removable and the upper one will be the moving door. . Before cutting the mesh panel (still to order) to cover the outer of the acrylic panel (to hide the frame and standups), I will make a paper one with an opening centered with the logo , just to visualize how wide can be this opening. Pictures will follow.

I took out the cables for the two removed suspended hdd's. Remains the ones for the optical drive. The power will be supplied by the original thinner black cable on the right , which now supplies for the yellow cable from the upper fans. The two fans will be connected directly to the mobo, still have to finish the soldering for the three wires plug. The bigger original black powers the two upper hdd's via two self made 4 pins plugs. By lowering the bottom plate, I will have enough room for the Power Supply Unit.

Seeing the last pic, you can understand why I was depressed after having discovered too late the TorqueX86 way to keep the back panel untouched, because I had already cut it at the time. But I am still looking for a broken case with a good back panel to do the same way.

After my night shift, will try to take some picts from the back side of the Mac Pro inner case.
