So, I've got this computer I put together, and it's wonderful, and it runs OS X beautifully. I've had the NVidia drivers set up, using the latest NVinject to get QE/etc out of the VGA port. But recently, I upgraded my monitor, and I tried to use the DVI out of my video card instead. Unfortunately, as soon as I plug in the DVI cable, my screen goes black, and the poor thing crashes. Oddly enough, the display doesn't turn off, or go into a stand-by mode. Rather, the screen stays on, but for some reason, the card would appear to be putting out a black screen. Then I have to reboot with -s and remove the kernel extension before I can boot again.

I'm at a loss about what to try next. I've tried using the Titan and Natit drivers, as well as the version of NVinject that comes with the 3.1 (I think?) NVinject installer.

My computer is:
AMD 4000+
MSI K9AGM3
2x 1Gb Crucial DDR2-667 RAM
120 Gb Seagate SATA HDD
NVidia GeForce 8500 GT
Lite-On DVD-RW (SATA)

Nothing hugely fancy, but it sure beats my old P4.
And it's a lot faster than my G5 iMac. smile.gif

And I'm running 10.5.1 with the AMD SSE2/SSE3 patches (at least that's what it was called).

I'd really really appreciate any help that anyone would be kind enough to offer. smile.gif
Is there any information besides what I've given that would be helpful?

Does this have anything to do with my NVCAP setting? Honestly, I've not the slightest clue that NVCAP is, but it's all over the forums, so I'm rather curious about it.

Thanks a Bunch!

I have a similar problem. Same card, 8500GT. If I boot up with DVI, the screen goes black on bootup. Switching to the VGA port at that point doesn't help. If I bootup with the VGA port, all is good. Kinda sucks running my very expensive very large LCD with an analog input. But I'll live with it till someone figures out how to fix this problem. Seems like everyone has it, the only real solution is to get a video card with two DVI ports, rather than one VGA and one DVI. Or maybe just one DVI port period. Since I JUST bought this card, I don't plan to replace it. The laptop guys are suffering with this problem in a much bigger way.. Their internal screens don't work. I'm sure someone is going to figure out what's wrong with the driver real soon, and fix it. smile.gif

Which card are you using? I built a system today with an evga 8500GT 512MB and I used only the DVI port with no problems.

It doesn't have a brand name. It's just an nVidia GeForce 8500GT..

I have a straightforward working Kalyway 10.5.1 installation. The GeForce 8500GT 256MB graphics are finally working thanks to selecting NVinject 256MB Vanilla and the latest kexts and framework (defaults) in NVInstallerV.41.

System Profiler reports: "Graphics by NVIDIA" and NVinject 0.2.1, 256 MB VRAM, Device 0x0421 (correct for a 8500 GT), accelerated display, Quartz Extreme, etc.

VGA and DVI video both work well and at different resolutions. But no S-Video. Blank screen. Is it reasonable to expect S-Video to also work? Have others had success with it? Suggestions how are greatly appreciated.

Kalyway 10.5.1
Asus P5K-VM
Pentium E2200 Dual Core
2GB of DDR2
nVidia 8500GT 256MB
Audio onboard Realtek ALC883 (ALCinject with codec from Ubuntu)
Samsung 320GB SATA
Lite-On DVD-RW SATA

I have Leo4all v2 working on my Intel DG31PR with a Core 2 Duo. My video card is also a EVGA Nvidia Geoforce 8500 GT - 512mb. I used the nvinject 0.2.1 512 on the leo installer DVD and it worked, but there was no QE. I then deleted the nvinject kext and tried the NVkush installer with the new .plist for the 512 mb and it is again working but still no QE. How did you get your EVGA cards working?

Hi guys:

I have the same issue,
XFX Nvidia Geoforce 8500 GT,DVI cable,22 inch samsung monitor. OS X always standby and black screen when I reboot computer.
Shall I reinstall Kalyway 10.5.2 or just install Nvidia driver ? Just give me some ideas.
update: I delete Ge*,NV* kext and install new Nvidia driver, still not work.

Thanks,

I am also having problems with my 8500, i can get qe/ci working for one boot with the 4.1 installer, but after the next boot, black screen. Deleting the gforce kext in -x mode fixes that but no qe/ci.

U need to use DVI to VGA splitter and it will work, if u see black screen when u boot in ur mac... If u have it try it, if u dont buy it, or borrow it.... Or u can see in ur Graphic or Monitor guide what input u must use...

Hey Colask8,

I have a few DVI to VGA splitters I just realized I have been running in VGA mode and I have to boot twice to get to the desktop.. VGA hangs at the Blue screen after the Apple logo... will test and update everybody..

I don't know if this will help any of you, but I used the EFIStudio at this link to enable my 8500GT under 10.5.4. It works fine with both VGA and DVI, CI/QE enabled (up to 2560x1600 on DVI). It has entries for lots of cards including all "flavors" of the 8500GT (256M, 512M, 1Gig). Just select your card, add it and write to boot.plist.

I used DVI and DIABOLIKS driver... works like a charm....

I tried that and still cannot get dvi out sad.gif

I had the same problem and fixed it by setting the correct NVCAP in NVinject.kext

What model and brand is your 8500GT?

Just an FYI I resored all my Bios settings and DVI worked 80% of the time so I changed Mobo's form an ECS 945 to a p35 3DSL and the NVinject.kext worked fine...

FYI I am using a BFG 8500 GTS 512MB from Frys for $30...AR

Had the same problem in my other hack...

using an XFX 8500 256mb...
VGA works but DVI doesn't.... strange thing is if i boot with VGA and then switch to DVI then it will work...
sometimes need to hit "detect display" in system preferences...

Heard it had to to with the NVCAP but i tried different types with no luck....

gave my old hack to my cuz but it bugs me that i never fixed it....
