The 2.4 E6600 Core 2 Duo has looked like a great chip to me for quite some time. Unfortunately, as I piece together my system, I see that the price has jumped to the $235-$240 mark... Which makes it seem like less of a deal. Even when I consider how easily it overclocks.
I see that now for $40-$50 less, I can pick up a 2.66 E6750 Core 2 Duo... Which likely won't overclock as nicely.
I have no need to overclock. I simply want to get the most bang for my buck, and would prefer to spend < $200 on a CPU that will mate nicely with my Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 Rev. 2.0.
Any thoughts? Recommendations?

I've gotten my E6600 as high as 3.5GHz, but of course OS X crapped out as soon as I started doing any intense 3d graphics.
Right now it's a rock-solid 3.3GHz.
I recommend the E8400 45nm if you can find 1 in stock & not get raped price-wise. Personally, I'm waiting for the 45nm quad-cores
which should be out in the next 2-3 month hopefully.

I have the Ga p35 ds3r and have been running my e6550 at 3.2 stable for 9 months if you want to save those extra 20 bucks. If it runs stable at 3.2, it can do the 2.66 of the e6750 easily.
Same board, Q6600 G0 @ 3.6 daily, have run at 3.8ghz

Thanks for the feedback. At this very moment, I'm leaning toward the E6750. I've read several accounts from folks who have them running rock solid at 3.2 with stock cooling. Some claim to have gone much higher.
The E8400 looks like a nice buy, but I can't find anyone reputable who has them in stock. The other thing holding me back, is that I see in the wiki that OSX reports the chip as "Unknown." Forgive my n00bness, but it seems like I have read that this can lead to problems? Specifically with updates?
Is there any truth to that?
My goal is to setup a system that is as "vanilla" as possible.
