This guide is a compilation of my knowledge of what I have learned on this site, as well as input from other users.

**This Guide probably works on most of the P35-DS3* Series or any well supported Motherboard, it is a very general guide.**
-It is reported working for sure under the P35-DS3L, DS3 Boards, and most P35/ICH9 Gigabyte boards, Asus P5W DH Deluxe, any Asus with ICH7+ Chipsets (And most Boards with ICH7+ Chipsets).
-I would reccomend a different path for Nforce/Sli/AMD Chipset users.

**Unrelated to this motherboard,I have also compiled a list of Video cards (NVIDIA/ATI) Drivers and solutions (at bottom).**
-If your card is not there, it does not mean it is not supported. I will continue to add drivers as I find them.

After following these steps you will have a 100 % working install. Software update will also Work (Except for OS Upgrades, ex: 10.5.1-10.5.2).
Do NOT be intimidated by this guide. It is very straight forward, and written for 'Beginners'
-most of this Post is not even the main guide, calm down.

-USB DVD drives work (Tested by Skippy911)

-P-Ata DVD Drives only sometimes work(depending on the drive) I myself could not get neither a Samsung nor Pioneer to work. Best to stick S-Ata.

-P-Ata (aka IDE) hard drives work, depending on the motherboard. I know they work on DS3L and P5W for sure, I am sure they work on many more.

-Not all (MOST DO) S-Ata DVD drives work. If someone is looking to buying a new one, I know first hand THIS ONE works fine.

I think the reason of why some S-Ata and probably most P-Ata's that non-working drives may have older firmware, so it could be a simple software update to fix, worth a try.

For reference, when I try using P-Ata DVD drives (and possibly non-working S-Ata drives), this is what happens when loading the disc. I could not find a solution to this either.

The Install


--Pre-Install Checklist--

Bios Settings:
-Change S-Ata mode from Legacy IDE to Native.
-Disable all CPU Thermal settings.
-DS3L users, AHCI NOW WORKS WITH ALL PORTS, Download an replace Kexts HERE
-Everything else should pretty much be default/not important if you change.
-Make sure The Leopard drive is set to boot.
-If you are only running 64 Bit Operating Systems (Leopard/Vista64) then change HPET mode to 64bit.

I highly recommend using the Kalyway 10.5.1 distribution, as this is what I used, and I will be making references to it in this guide.

edit: When guide was written, kalyway 10.5.1 was the only kalyway leopard out. Now I would advise using a later version



--Installing Leopard With MBR Scheme--
This portion of the guide will inform you to install with an MBR partition scheme. MBR makes it easier to dual boot. Although easier, there are some limitations: You can not resize the Leopard partition or delete/resize any of the partitions on your Leopard drive.

*Warning, remove your ethernet cable from your computer. Do not plug it back in until after initial setup in Leopard.

1.)Insert the Kalyway DVD. No Kernel Flags are needed, DVD boots up fine with S-Ata Optical drive.

2.)When DVD loads (usually takes about 10 minutes) go to tools --> Disk Utility.
-Click on your Leopard Drive.
-Erase and format as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)
-Make sure the Hard Drive is Formatted as Master Boot Record (it will say it near the bottom of the disk utility screen, and go into the Option menu in disk utility to change the format.)
-Make sure you give your leopard partition a name that is ONE word, and not just "untitled 1 or Mac OSX" as that is reported to give some problems. Keep it simple like "Leopard" or "OSX"

3.) Exit the Disk Utility and Enter Setup.
-Choose the Correct Formatted drive
-Make sure you go into Customize options
-*If you have a "Core 2" or compatible processor, choose the Option for both Vanilla and the Fix. If you have a pentium, do not select this option
-Choose MBR_EFI emulation rather than GUID (last option)
******DO NOT select any other options in Customize menu, I REPEAT, DO NOT.******

4.) Start the Actual install, you can skip Disk Check if you want.
-The install should only take about 10 minutes despite what seems like high estimated times at first.

5.)Install Successful, Now to get Everything working.

6.)In leopard, fill out the initial setup *Making sure your Ethernet is unplugged. Press no networking when that option comes up. After the initial setup, You may replug your Ethernet.
-Boot into Leopard. Use This to restore all settings back to default.



--GUID INSTALL METHOD--
Ok this part of the guide is if you want to use a GUID partition map on your drive. This basically makes it easier to resize/delete partitions, and some say it makes it faster and etc. It is a little more difficult to dual boot. I have not used GUID and dual boot at the same time (I use osx86 as my main OS W/GUID.) I will not explain how to. I will just tell you how to install leopard on a single drive without any other OS's

1) Use the same Pre-Install settings as posted above.

2) Insert the Kalyway DVD and Boot up. Go to Utilities --> Disk Utility

3) In disk utility, format the whole hard drive.. making sure to select GUID partition map (not just in customize) in the Options menu
-Format as Mac OS Extended(journaled)
--Make sure you give your leopard partition a name that is ONE word, and not just "untitled 1 or Mac OSX" as that is reported to give some problems. Keep it simple like "Leopard" or "OSX"

4) Proceed to install.. but select customize options on the install. -*If you have a "Core 2" or compatible processor, choose the Option for both Vanilla and the Fix. If you have a pentium, do not select this option. The choose
the option for GUID EFI.
******DO NOT select any other options in customize menu, I REPEAT, DO NOT.******


5) Hit install, Skipping the Disk check or not.

--Quick/Easy Dual/Tri-Boot Guide--
If you want to Dual Boot then look here first, if not, then go on to the rest of the guide. I will tell you multiple ways on how to dual boot.
*This is not an In-Depth Dual boot guide. If you know anything about computers, this will be sufficient for you. If you are 100% Noob, I suggest you use one of the many In-Depth Dual boot guides out there.

-If you want to Dual boot with XP and Leopard, go to Part 1
-If your looking at a Dual boot with Vista and Leopard, or a Tri-boot Between Vista, XP, and leopard, go to Part 2


Part 1.)Okay, simple dual boot with XP and Leopard on the same or different hard drives.
1. If it is the same hard drive, Use your favorite disk management tool and create 2 partition for XP and Leopard... Making the leopard partition Fat32. Make sure XP is set Active.
2. If they are different hard drives, make sure the XP drive is set to boot in the Bios (we will be changing it back to the leopard drive after install)
3. Put the XP disk in and Install (its important that XP is installed first).
4. Once XP is done installing, Set Leopard active, or if it is on a different hard drive, change that drive to boot in the Bios.
5. Install OS X using the Rest of this Install guide for direction. Reboot and you will have a Boot loader with a countdown. Press any key to get an option between the 2 drives/partitions.
*NOTE: XP Requires additional drivers to run AHCI. You must install AHCI with these drivers. Find Matrix storage drivers on INTEL's Site. Alternatively to get AHCI on a current install of windows, use the quick guide found later on in this this thread HERE *Thanks Cobraf.


Part 2.) Ok, Dual or tri-boot between Vista*/XP, and leopard.
1. First, if you are going to have XP in addition to vista, make sure to install that first.
2. Now Install Leopard second using the rest of this guide. *IMPORTANT, setup the vista partition before installing leopard.. if vista will be on a second drive, this does not matter.
3. Set the Vista partition active using any number of ways.
4. Install Vista.
5. Upon rebooting you should now have the option between "an older version of windows" and Vista
6. In Vista, download a program called "EasyBCD"
7. Open EasyBCD, go to ADD/Remove Entries and add a new one under the Mac OS option. Choose osx86 Generic PC. Name it whatever.
8. Save, Reboot, you should have a working tri-boot.. or Dual boot if you opted out of installing XP.


CHAIN0 Method
If you are having trouble with Dual booting between XP and Leopard, this method allows you to use the Windows XP Boot loader to choose between.

If you can not find the chain0 file in /usr/standalone/i386 as described in the topic, search the web and download the file. Copy it into the root of the Windows installation and modify the boot.ini file (C:\chain0="Mac OS x86"). Now you can always boot from the first drive and use the Windows boot manger to boot Leopard on the second disk. *Big thanks to Master12271

10.5.2 UPDATE/Graphic Update
There are two ways to update to 10.5.2. The Kalyway Combo update, or the Normal Combo update. The normal combo update is much faster.. although some find it more complicated. I recommend the Kalyway Combo update on most systems. I recommend the Normal combo update on new installs. YOU SHALL NOT USE SOFTWARE UPDATE
-Please not that Updating can, and will screw up some features (Sleep, shut down, sound, video). The update can also improve these features. If sound/video ceases to work, reinstall kexts for them.

--Kalyway Combo Update--
This method is by far, noob proof. All you do is download the package from the Bay and run it. Let it be known that it does not update the Vanilla kernel to 10.5.2.. so you have to search for the vanilla kernel package on the Bay as well.

This way is better for people on current installs because it does not mess around with system kexts.. saving your sound or other changes. It is of course slower this way because the torrent is much slower than downloading straight from Apple.

First boot, as always, takes long. I find it works to boot into safe mode then restart normally.

--Normal Combo Update--
This method is faster, in terms of downloading the file.. but may be a little more complicated for absolute noobs (really is not that difficult).

First off, let me start by saying, this guide was written by =-Devin-= and the support thread can be found Here
It was originally written by Netkas but simplified further.

1.) Download the Update HERE
2.) Open terminal, Type in the following commands (before you start installation)

sudo -s

Type your password then press enter. Then type the following, then hit enter.

while sleep 1; do rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext; done

** YOU MUST DO THIS STEP ABOVE!!!
You CANNOT just delete it afterward. It WILL BREAK the install, and require a new install or restore from backup.

3.) Run the installer
4.) When it is finished DO NOT REBOOT.
5.) Type the following command in a new terminal Window

sudo nano /System/InstallAtStartup/scripts/1

6.) Find the line with /System/Library/Extensions/Dont Steal Mac OS X.kext
7.) Replace it with:

8.) Control O to save, then press enter to save. Control X to exit...
9.) Reboot.

* Please let it be known that the first boot fails usually. Second boot should work. If not, boot into safe mode (-x at bootloader menu) and once in safe mode, simply restart into normal mode.

--Graphic Update--
-Safe to do via Software update.
-Improves performance.. may have to reinstall video kexts.

--Audio--
DS3L Boards
Audio is quick and painless to install.
-Download 2 needed kexts HERE.
-In spotlight (search bar in top right corner) type "Kext Helper" and open up that program. Drag the 2 kexts from that package into Kext Helper, install and restart. Alternatively, if you know how, you can install the kexts manually.
-Next you want to head over to this Thread and download HDA patcher 1.20 (or latest)
-Download this TEXT File
-Drag the Text file to the HDApatcher Icon, do not open the HDA patcher pre doing this, it must be closed.
-Authenticate, it will install for you, then reboot.
-Sound is Working!!

*5.1 Does not work. 2.1 and Digital DOES.

P35) DS3P,DS3R, S3, DQ6 DS3 Boards
G33M) DS2R

1) Find alc889a HERE

Use ALC883 pkg found on the Kalyway DVD, Post installation.

P5W DH
After 10.5.2 update: Download this Text file Click to view attachment and save it to the desktop. Download Taruga's AppleHDA Patcher (1.20 or latest) HERE
-Drag the Text file to the HDApatcher Icon, do not open the HDA patcher pre doing this, it must be closed.
-Authenticate, it will install for you, then reboot.
-Sound is Working!!
-dont worry about getting sound before the update.

What works: •Coaxial digitial working with 5.1 in supported codecs. (optical-untested) •Line out (lime port, detected as internal speakers) •One other line out port works (Black? detected as line out).

--LAN--
LAN works out of the box for Leopard. (for the 8111 series)

-Bonjour services may not work correctly without the RealtekR1000 kext found in the 'HERE' just below.

-If it does not work after many a hard work playing around, you can Try HERE
-Alternatively, Realtek has some OSX drivers on their site. They only have up to 10.4 (probably cause Leopard should work by default) but it you want to install the Tiger version, and copy over the tiger IONETWORKINGFAMILY.KEXT, be my guest Realtek 8111 series (Note that i am not supporting this method)

P5K-C
This board, and all other Asus's with Attansic L-1 Lan Cards do not work at all. The best bet it to buy a PCI card like This

P5W DH
Lan works out of the box, both ports.

Wireless works natively with Realtek Drivers
Does not work as Airport.

--VIDEO--

NVIDIA CARDS
-I would reccomend the latest kexts for most cards here., Latest 10.5.2 NVinject Installer

Tweaking the Look and Feel of Your Hackintosh

--Wake From Sleep with Keyboard and Mouse--
I found this out from a good friend, Nikkpaps. If your computer successfully sleeps, but can not successfully awaken from that sleep with keyboard and mouse, you may want to try this. Simply plug the extra usb panel that come with most motherboards, that plugs into the board's onboard usb headers, and connects on the PCI expansion port. On the P5W DH, the onboard port that works, tested by myself, is the onboard plug closest to the orange ez_raid sata connectors.
--Changing System Profiler/About This Mac Values--
First things first, Install this new kext (Don't worry, it shouldn't be able to break installs) Click to view attachment
-Restart
-System Profiler should be reporting correct info in Hardware Overview.

To Fix "About this mac"
1.) Go to /System/Library/CoreServices (manually, not in terminal)
2.) Find the file "loginwindow", Right click-->Show package contents.
3.) Then browse to /Contents/Resources/English.lproj
4.) Copy the file "AboutThisMac" to the desktop.
5.) Open with Text Editor
6.) Find the line "ABOUT_BOX_MULTIPLE_PROCESSORS_FIELD_FORMAT" (line without the / at the begining

7.) Edit the Value of "%@" after the equal sign to say whatever you
want it to say in about this mac for processor. For example


8.) Do the same for the line "ABOUT_BOX_SINGLE_PROCESSOR_FIELD_FORMAT"
= "2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Quad, Q6600"; (don't know if it makes a
difference doing it for this one as well.

9.) Next, we can edit what we want it to say for Memory: Find the line
"ABOUT_BOX_MEMORY_FIELD_FORMAT" =. It is near the bottom of the page.

10.) Change the Value after the equal sign to whatever you want. For
Example

11.) Now save the file on your desktop.
12.) Right click on it-->Get info. Make sure the extensions is .strings and not .txt
13.) Delete the original "AboutThisMac" file by dragging it into the trash can.. you will need to authenticate.
14.) Drag the new "AboutThisMac" from the desktop in its place in the "English.lproj" folder.
15.) No need to restart, reopen About This Mac and see your changes.

--Changing "About This Mac" Graphic--
Are you bored of going into "About This Mac" and seeing the dull, default graphic? I will show you how to change that.

Here is How:
You can get any image that you want there, assuming it is the same dimensions. You can make your own, download one on this site, or you can use this Gigabyte one I made.

1.) Go to /System/Library/CoreServices (manually, not in terminal)
2.) Find the file "loginwindow", Right click--Show package contents.
3.) Then browse to /Contents/Resources. You should now be in a folder with images.
4.) Find the one Labeled "MacOSX.tif" and back it up somewhere.. then delete if from its' normal spot.
5.) Rename your new image (Gigabyte.tif) to the same name, MacOSX.tif
6.) Drag it to the /Contents/Resources Folder and authenticate.
7.) Now simply log out then log back in, and your new image will be there.

--Mac Pro Picture in the Finder--
In this short section, I will show you how to have this:

First, start by having finder the selected window.

-Go to preferences of the finder, go to the side bar tab, and then select "Computer" under devices.

-After this, if your lucky, you will have a Mac Pro icon, other wise, it will be a monitor, or some other form of a mac.

-To change this, browse to /System/Library/CoreServices. Then find coretypes.bundle, right click and show contents. Then browse to /Contents/Resources

-Scroll down until you see the pictures of the various types of macs. Find the one you want it to BE CHANGED to and drag it to your desktop.

-Rename it to the picture that is in your finder, drag it back, replace, authenticate.

-Force quit/Relaunch finder to see it change.

--RAID 0 (Fast Raid) or 1(Mirror) On Asus P5W DH--
Raid 0 works natively, and perfectly with this board.
Raid 0 pairs 2 identical hard drives for increased (sometimes double) performance.
Raid 1 backs up the first hard drive simultaneously with the second drive for back up.

Most motherboards have software raid. It uses the on board S-Ata controller, and drivers for windows to emulate Raid0. The Asus P5W DH on the other hand has 3 Raid options, 1 working in Leopard. There is 2 software Raids, Jmicron, ICH7R. Then there is the Hardware Raid.

The 2 Orange ports on the Asus P5W DH, labeled "EZ_Raid" are is infact a hardware raid controller. Silicon Image. Using Raid0 in Leopard is as easy as doing it in windows with this controller.

-Simply plug in the 2 identical hard drives to the 2 orange ports, switch the pin on the motherboard to Raid 0 or Raid 1.

-Boot into bios, Enable the Setting "EZ_Raid Mode change" which will stay enabled for ONE boot only, don't worry when it is disabled later.

-Install Leopard, or windows, like normal. The drive is labeled "External Disk 0"

As an example of the speed, a good S-ATA drive at 7200RPM scores about 80mb/s in both read and write on xbench. My raptor 10k RPM scores about 105mb/s in read and write. With 2 of those babies in raid 0, I score 205mb/s every time.

Various Issues

--AHCI Enabled vs. Disabled--
ICH9 CHIPSETS (P35-DS3* Are ICH9): NEW, AHCI WITH ALL PORTS ON ICH9 WORKS.
EVERYBODY ENABLE AHCI

Download and Replace Kexts with this AHCI FIX (ICH9 chipsets need only)

AHCI enabled runs much smoother than disabled. It fixes some issues. To get AHCI working with Windows XP, you must download Intels Matrix Storage Drivers, from intels site, make sure to specify the correct Chipset.

Boot windows W/O AHCI, install drivers, reboot with. You are good to go.

AHCI enabled gets rid of 4gb of RAM issue. Read 'KNOWN ISSUES' for more information.

Non ICH9 CHIPSETS: ENABLE AHCI

--To Get rid of Orange External drive icons while running AHCI--
The Orange drives are not only uglier, they can give problems with speed and permissions. To fix:

--Known Issues--
1) This happens with many motherboards. If you have 4GB of ram in dual Channel, you may get a kernel panic when ram usage peaks above 3gb(I have Kernel Panics even when not all 4gb is utilized). To fix this simply:
-Go to Terminal. Enter "sudo nano /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist"
-Authenticate. Add the "maxmem=3072" in between the strings under Kernel Flags
-Note* 3072(3gb) is not the magical number here. It may not be the highest you can set your ram. It seems to have stopped any kernel panics but I have not played around raising it 32mb each time and testing if i get kernel panic. If someone wants to play around and fine the Threshold and share with us, I will edit this and give you credit.
-Save and Exit

Another Fix: AHCI enabled seems to stop these problems.

2) I am not aware that there is a solution for 5.1 sound. Digital does however work.

3) Shutdown/Sleep do not work by Default. This Problem is discussed on THIS Thread.
From what I gather, it can be fixed and working perfect by downloading a new Kernel edited for sleeping/Shutdown off the IRC and replacing your old vanilla kernel with it.
This means you will not have stock Vanilla kernel anymore.. however its very close to stock. Any software updates will probably replace this new kernel and you will then have the stock kernel again... which means you will have to replace it every update.

EDIT: More builds seem to be working correctly with recent updates.

4) AHCI + ICH9® Chipsets formally did not work well together, there appears to be a fix for it now (please confirm) Download HERE (ICH9)


--Trouble Shooting--

Question: Upon booting, I receive 'B0_error'
Answer: You have installed Leopard no regard to change the customize settings thoroughly enough. Your partition is most likely formatted as MBR, and you chose the default option in customize 'GUID_EFI' rather than 'MBR_EFI' or vice versa. Also, make sure your drive is S-Ata, and is on port 0 or 1 (If AHCI is enabled). Make sure it is set to boot in bios (unless you use vista Boot loader, or some alternate configuration.

Question/Problem: I cannot see the hard drives on my last 2 S-Ata ports.
Answer: AHCI is enabled in Bios, and you have an ICH9® Chipset, and you have not applied the new kexts to fix it. Download kexts (linked several times above)

Question/Problem: My DVD drive will not load the install disk.
Answer: As this guide is written in reference to, use Kalyway's disk. Make sure you have the correct Bios settings.

Question/Problem: LAN DOESN'T WORK!!
Answer: It should, DHCP issues can be hard to fix, try. If it isnt showing up, or you give up, Try HERE

Question/Problem: My install wont boot!! (or any other random problem)
Answer: It should work if using DS3*/Asus or similar boards and following the guide. If you have a different board, make a post asking why it is not working, AND SPECIFY YOUR SPECIFICATIONS/SETUP in addition to a detailed problem

Question/Problem: I am getting random kernel panics (Grey screen that tells you to restart).
Answer: You have 4GB of ram in Dual channel right? Your not running in AHCI mode right? 4GB of ram is finicky. To solve Kernel panics, enable AHCI (if possible) or set maxmem(see KNOWN ISSUES).

Question/Problem: I get a Blue Screen of death when I boot into Windows XP on my Leopard/XP dual boot.
Answer: If this problem occurs, I am sure you have AHCI enabled. Disable it and it will work. To get AHCI+XP, you must burn the AHCI drivers to a Floppy and install them upon the Windows XP install, (during the "F6 to install third party driver") I believe drivers can be found on INTEL's Site.

-All 6 Onboard sata ports work
-Onboard Raid works (even as boot drive)
-Both Pata Ports work (total of 4 pata devices)
-Both Onboard Lan works out of the box
-Audio, 4 channels working (2 ports) and digital works.
-Wireless works.
-DH remote does not work yet.
-Fire Wire/USB work
-I cant think of anything else that DOES NOT work.

*When you get this tutorial to work on your computer, please post your detailed specifications and any tweaks you may have made. I will add any info to this guide to help future members.

Sounds good , i'm thinking of getting this motherboard but a have an IDE DVD Drive. can anyone successfully report being able to install with an IDE DVD drive?

I think it works as long as you do not select AHCI, give me 5 minutes, i will test.

Edit: Bad news... Using IDE DVD drive did not work for me. I tried various settings. In the apple loading screen i get a little cross over the apple which usually means it doesnt work. Maybe it will work with Other distro's idk i just tried Kalyway. you can buy a sata drive for 30 bucks, if ur gonna get a 90 dollar motherboard.. whats another 30?

actually ive decided to look into the P5W DH Deluxe, people say there is extreme support for this motherboard. maybe IDE support too...

yea thats a great motherboard. I have it infact. But i scratched a trace on the bottom and it doesnt start anymore. I might be able to fix it but its really small.

why you looking for another build anyway? just for sport or what?

I have the same board with a similar setup. Everything is working well except sleep/shutdown. I was wondering if yours was working and if so what bios settings/kexts/tweaks you had used? And thanks for the nice how-to, I just put this system together yesterday and was looking for some info on the audio... and and there was your post!

Sadly... shutdown and sleep doesnt work well. Thanks for reminding me, i will put it into the post 1. I heard you can find fixes for shut down and sleep. I will look around for those.

Edit: I am editing this 3 months after the original post: Sleep may work now with various updates and updated netkas kernel.

I have done what you said and everything worked great. E2180 processor, 250gig sata, 2gig ram, 7300gt 256megs ram, and I used a usb dvd drive for install since I did not have a sata. Everything is installed and working great

Yea, restart isnt an issue. I dont mind not being able to shutdown.. i do get it once in a while anyway. I only shut down once a day.. and i turn off my surge protector when i go to bed (no LED lights) so i just leave it at the half shutdown state. BTW, you got it working.... which bios version do you have, when you get a chance.

Edit: Previous information was before 10.5.2 update and when i was on My gigabyte, Now with 10.5.2 and Asus board, SLeep/REstart/Shutdown works.

Its hard to tell since the damn thing goes so quickly but it looks like I have the F6 bios. Does that sound right? BTW sleep seems to shutdown the mac and when I press power it just goes through a normal boot. So I dont think it sleeps but does a shutdown. Oh well I dont need sleep anyways Is there a way to get frontrow remote working? Also how about divx and such in quicktime? VLC works fine but I know frontrow only uses quicktime. TIA :-D

F6, i think that is right.. i have like f6a i think. I dont know what you mean by frontrow remote. Also dont know what ur asking about Divx and such. The kalyway comes preinstalled with codec for video playing in quicktime.. i knwo that. I think it is divx.

I have the F6 Bios as well and sleep seems to shut down the computer for me also. Perian should add codec support to quicktime

Shutdown doesnt work... but if i got to sleep, that seems to shut down. Reboot works properly.

Well does Sleep Shutdown the hardrives and fans and everything? cause my sleep and shutdown both do the same thing, and that is shutting down the OS

Please let me say this is a pretty decent guide, but not everything "works" out of the box. Most of what's in this quide is good.

I will say that in my experience with this mobo and installing OSX there are some issues.

1. Lan does not "work out of the box" I have never been able to get it going. I don't know what others are using, but please share the info.
2. Restart and shutdown work for me no problem. I don't use sleep so I can't say about that.
3. I have an LG IDE dvd drive and it works flawlessly. I used it to install Kalyway 10.5.1 no issues. I' ve been installing and running OSX86 since the early days, which is getting close to 2yrs now. WOW!! that long. I use OSX86 as my primary machine. No more windows for me.
4. You don't have to "master boot record". You can choose GUID if you want. Don't limit yourself to "master boot record". At least with GUID you can resize partitions without destroying them., can't do that with "master boot record".
5. I to have used a USB external drive to install Kalyway 10.5.1 and no issues at all. Well I shouldn't say that. Running OSX86 from a USB drive is a little slow. Not much, but it can be annoying. Good for testing!

Please incorporate this stuff into your guide. The more input from peeps with this mobo the better this guide will be. One other thing that's kinda weird. In my bios for my internal OSX drive to boot I have to set it to boot from an external USB drive. I suppose if I set the BIOS to default settings and then went and make my changes that might fix the problem.

OK thanks Chevy i will try to incorporate it as neatly as possible. Also, how did u get ide dvd drive to work? did u change any settings or what? cause i tried to different ide dvd drives and i just got that little circle with a slash in the middle pop up over my loading apple thing.. and it just hangs around there forever.

Also i am aware GUID works.. but my guide is centered around MBr.. ill try to make a work around and put it in there.


And "Onboard GBLan RTL8168B not working" Is that the lan you have? Cause we Have the RTL8111B. Either way i think its the same series and should work out of the box. Is it atleast detected? and you cannot connect to DHCP? I had that problem for a while.. many hardwork in windows and leopard to finally get it working. I made sure Wake on lan was on in windows. You said u dont have windows so that doesnt matter. On leopard i disabled it, enabled like 10 times, unplugged the cable and replugged it in 10 times, restarted my computer 50 more times. Cut total power from my computer for a while. Finally got it working upon one of my restarts. Now it works all the time.

Edit: I put some stuff about GUID and MBR and how IDE DVD works. I can always fix it up later and add if it isnt good. Also i have never used GUID before and dont really know how to install it... so that guide i wrote was just on assumption, and id assume its right.

It just worked. No fussing. It could be that the IDE drive you were trying to use may not be supported in OSX. Just a thought.



Yes that is what is reported in Network Util. I'm pretty sure RTL8168B and RTL8111B are the same. When I was fooling around trying to get the lan working, I installed a bunch of different drivers and at one point in Network Util it showed both RTL8168B and RTL8111B. So it's detected. My router doesn't issue it an IP addy. The card it's self was giving its own IP addy. I knda gave up and bought a Realtek 8139 pci lan card. Put it in a bam! worked out of the box. Sorry about the pun.

Yea, idk whats up with yours. I was bout ready to press checkout on my cart to purchase one of those cards when it started working. In the end its probably better to use a third party card for various reasons. Im sure if you wanted to you could get that onboard working.. but its not worth it now.

I'm using a GA-P35C-DS3R, a Seagate 7200.10 SATA on socket 0 and an PATA DVD.

The install was "successful" (on a MBA partition) but when it comes to rebooting, nothing happens. Just a blinking cursor. I but the DVD in a USB enclosure and installed again and exactly the same happened.What's wrong? I think the install worked - there is now 5.7GB on the partition, I just need to make it boot! I checked the partition was GParted LiveCD and it does have the 'boot' flag set.

Any ideas?

chevy2410, would it be possible for you to post photos of your BIOS screens? It would be really great to see a definitive configuration from someone who has a solid install on this motherboard.

Lan worked OTB for me no configuring or anything. Guess I just got lucky

I will work on Screen Shots later. @clv101. can u give me more info...? like did u get to the darwin bootloader? does it just restart the computer? what happens? also im not familiar with the p35C. And maybe give us some other specs.

do any of you guys get random kernel panics? i am downloading WoW, and doing some other stuff.. simple non taxxing stuff and everyonce in a while i get a panic just randomely. Anyone know why?

I have a GA-P35-DS3 and when installation goes fine and when bootloader is successfully installed..
However when I boot up then I get a glimpse of macos booting and then it reboots!

I have a 8800 GT in my machine I dont know if that has anything to do with it. At this point I dont know how to add the 10.5.2 kexts to KALYWAY...

No KP's for me yet. I installed Adobe CS3, ripped a dvd using handbrake, played on safari, and chatted on adium all at the same time. Perhaps your overclocking is not going so well? Try turning back the memory overclocking and see if that helps.

No kernel panics here. Leopard runs just as stable as my Tiger install.

ok i put my cpu back to 2.4. I will see if stay stable. Also chevy, can you give me the configuration of your hardrives and how the partitions are formatted? i just want to test my theory of somthing.

@deadhead, I really dont know whats going on. Anything i tell you will just be based on speculation. I know it works for this motherboard.. you may just want to post outside this topic.

@clv, where is that blinking cursor? does mac os even begin to load? Do you get the bootloader? do you not even make it to the bootloader. Again i have no experience with this board, you may want to post outside this topic.

Edit: wasnt my overclock that gave me panics. I heard that having NTFS partitions mounted causes an issue. I unmounted them just to check. If that doesnt work than i suspect its the hardrive that im on right now thats causing issues

OK well lemme know how it goes for you. Now I am thinking to get a nice firewire card and a wireless N card for this system. Is there any wireless N pci cards that work in osx?

Is there any possible solution to the 4gb ram limit besides the maxmem=3456? I hate to waste ram. If not, is the 3456 the absolute upper limit of ram the system can take? I was getting kernel panics with handbrake before i set maxmem, and now things are smooth. I just want to minimize the amount of wasted ram if i can.

What install disc are you using? If it's Kalyway or iAtkos there should be no issues of Darwin not loading or booting OSX.

i think maxmem at 3456 wasnt cutting it for me. I am not at my computer now but im am starting to think i will need to lower my max down. Im gonna try around 3gb next time. Ill update and tell what i find. Idk how to fix this problem.. it seems to be a problem with many boards not just ours. i heard it doesnt happen with other configurations of ram in dual channel. So say 8gb in dual channel would be fine... but im not about to invest in 2gb sticks.. all my sticks are 1gb

then again if i had 200 dollars to spend i would buy a processor or something else for the 2 extra lga 775 mobos i have laying around.

My GA-P35C-DS3R is virtually the same as the GA-P35-DS3L, it the "C" just means it supports DDR3 as well.

The good news is it now boots just fine. I'm installed with GUID, it's recognising the whole 200GB of my drive rather than just the first 128GB. I think my problem might have been my partition name "Untitled 1" with a space. Changing the name to "Leopard" might have helped.

Anyway - installed with the nVidia drivers on Kalyway (I have a nVidia 7300GT) and everything's good.

The next task is Sound, LAN (which doesn't seem to have worked but OS X seems to see an Ethernet adaptor).

One other point, I tried to copy a file to a USB key and it didn't work - any ideas?

i have no problem with USB drives. I am not familiar with the sound and lan Card on the DS3R, they probably are not exactly the same, i will look into it in a bit.


Also setting my maxmem down to 3072 (exactly 3gb) seemed to stop kernel panics for me, i dont know if i can go higher but 3456 was too high i guess. i will edit post #1

I had an extra 2x2gb sticks of ram lying around... so i threw them into my machine and removed the maxmem restrictions to test for kernel panics. I ran the memory test on a program called highload, and ended up with a kernel panic. So I guess the ram problems are not only restricted to 4gb, but 8 as well. So it seems no matter what I do, I wont be able to utilize all my ram . I might play around with maxmem and 8gb to see at what point it will become stable.

Anyone test timemachine on this motherboard setup? Is there any tweaks needed to get timemachine up and running? TIA

does anyone know if the GA-965P-DS3 mobo works the same way?

@Skippy, there is always issues with timemachine... If i can ever get my motherboard started again im gonna just install leopard on it.. GUID map with AHCI enabled (wont need more than 2 sata ports) I will work on getting Time machine. Although before when i tried it on this board.. it was really laggy and crappy.. probably a fix but idk yet.

@isuck, Im pretty sure that board is pretty compatible. This tutorial is fairly General of all setups. Also, as long as you dont have the ICH9 Chipset, AHCI enabled shouldnt be an issue for you. good luck

not very far clv101. I put the dvd in the drive, boot from dvd, then there are 4 lines of text with the last one saying that darwin is loading and a sort of progress thing made out of slashes and then after two minutes I see this gray screen I mentioned above.

3zero2 make sure your using a usb or sata dvd drive I had problems with my ide dvd drive and went to a usb one.

Hmmmm - does that mean with AHCI enabled that there is only room for one SATA optical drive and one hard drive? i was planning on having 2 SATA hard drives and an IDE DVD drive...but it sounds like it may be difficult to install that way.

i'll see what i can do to find a usb enclosure for my drive then...

I just installed and finished screwing around with this. I got my PC working.

I have restart / shutdown functionality, but sleep does the same thing as shutdown. Vanilla Kernel. Was able to play World of Warcraft and do other fun things

What did you do to get your 8800GT working? Did you try use Punk92's installer? I have an XFX 8800GT 512mb and after using Punk92's nvidia installer V1.9 I get a black screen after rebooting. Any thoughts?

Everything works as described in the guide except my video card and my onboard LAN. I can't get onboard LAN to work. Anyone else know how to fix the onboard LAN?
