Well, My whole family has made the plunge to get the mac and I'm the only one left so being me I want to do something with my old Windows Baised PC. I want to install Leopard Server on it, Why? I have no clue. I've got nothing else to do. Is there any possible way to do this?

My specs are
AMD Athlon 3800+ X2 64Bit
2GB Ram
nVidia 7800GT

If I can't then what are you recommendations for something that will let me do basically the same thing that Leopard server does?

Thanks

Also, I dont really care if I have to use an application like ParePC or something that allows it to run. I dont need to to be booted... Just running.
skyhighmac
You don't want to run pearpc. Its emulation isn't that fast. I would recommend installing iATKOS or another release, then use the Leopard server installer packages.

Okay, I'll try that. How do you reaplace the Installer packages? I'm a Noob at this.
skyhighmac
You don't replace them. Install mac os x leopard regular. Then get the server installer packages, and run those (like installing a program)
Juanto
Okay. I will try that. Thanks for the help.
skyhighmac
No problem. smile.gif

Skip Leopard Server and just install FreeNAS. Here's a good walkthrough:

http://www.orionmods.com/blog/?p=5

It's free, it supports a ton of server types (AFP, SMB, FTP, etc.), it's extremely stable, it's easy to set up, it will run on crummy hardware (200mhz cpu? no problem!). My uptime is over 3 months now! You can use it stream movies and music, back up your files (iTimeMachine works too!), store all your software, and so on.
Juanto
Thanks so much weaksauce. The other method seams a little complex.

awhk .. c'mon buddy .. do you really think that it is 'complex' to install some packages? We're talking about apple here ... I'd never seen any software or functionality at apple that was complex ;-)

Can you recommend me a detailed guide? I dont mind doing it. I'm just still unsure on how to.
~pcwiz
Just install Leopard normally, and then download the installer for the server packages and run it and install it, just like you would with a setup for a Windows program smile.gif

Can't explain it any simpler than that wink.gif
Juanto
Okay, Let me get this straight.

I install Leopard regularly, Nothing more than 10.5. Then When that's done I install the server packages.

Now, That's where I loose you. Do I then download and install Leopard server or is there something on the Leopard disk that has the packages?

I'm sorry for being a pain and a complete moron about this but I'm a long time Windows user so I'm completely lost.
skyhighmac
Yes. You need to dl the "Leopard Server Packages"

Hey can those be pulled from the install disk? I'd like to just get them from there and upgrade my Leopard system rather than find the packages on certain bays.
skyhighmac
Not from the regular Leo dvd.
dColumbus
Whoa, whoa, whoa... you're all talking about installing Leopard on your "Windows" PC like it's nothing. CAN you even install Leopard on your "Windows" PC? If so, how?
~pcwiz
hysterical.gif hysterical.gif hysterical.gif Not to be mean, but dColumbus do you realize that you are in a forum thats all about running OS X Leopard and Tiger on your PC? Its real easy, heres a FAQ I made:

Now this is gonna be in my signature now!

ROFL. I'm glad you saw the humor in it... and I was hoping to get just such a FAQ, so thank you, ~pcwiz. Cheers mates... I'm always good for a laugh. thumbsup_anim.gif

Can someone outline EXACTLY what to do in order to turn the Leopard install into Leopard Server? I'm using an AMD Processor, since I know that matters.
skyhighmac
That is what we are trying to do. I am thinking about trying a brazilmac patch on a server disc.

i got things up 99% of the way using kalyway and the retail server dvd. it was only when i tried to get adventurous and do the combo update when things got fuxored.

install kalyway 10.5.1 like normal
get image of the server install dvd
mount that image
install it as you would install any other program
it will go through and tell you that installation was successful
reboot
when you reboot it will run you through the server setup steps where you'll need your valid serial number
after that, you enter into the leo server environment which is reported as 10.5 (not 10.5.1)

i tried to use the same procedure as devin's 10.5.2 client update for the server combo update - however i could have mistyped something or the like, but about 28% of the way through the install i got a kernel panic. i rebooted with -v -x -f and sure enough it was the appleintelpowermanagement.kext that was the issue. no HPET.

now i'm back to square 1. updates to follow...

Can you post the exact place or at least include what needs to be done to install these infamous "server packages"? When I think of "packages" I think of a ZIP, DMG, EXE, etc. Is it as simple as that? Or...

Is this the right one to download:
http://forum.osx86scene.com/viewtopic.php?...p;sk=t&sd=a
daclothe
that's your base, then you need the server stuff. go up a couple of posts of mine and see how i did it to get a working server install (in your case instead of starting with kalyway, you start with zephyroth).

i'm just waiting to figure out how to get to 10.5.2 server without messing up my install. and yes, in my case i used the 6 gig leopard server install disc to install the packages.
dColumbus
Alright,

I have been able to get through the installation of Leopard, but when it restarts for the first time, it just hangs at the Apple Logo... so, I decided to select "SSE3" as for the next installation try, and this time it hangs at the Apple Logo and then restarts my computer... it will do that over and over again. Now, I've been reading about EFI all over the place. Do I need to install EFI manuall? If so, how do I install EFI for a GUID partition?

I'm so close, yet so far.
dColumbus
Update:

I've seriously tried everything... I've tried to install Leopard acording to so many procedures found on this website and I get one of these results every single time:

1) Installs fine, after first reboot it hangs at Apple Logo loading...

1) Installs fine, after first reboot it hangs at bios screen with a blinking cursor...

1) Installs fine, after first reboot it hangs at Apple Logo and eventually shows a little circle with a line through it above the Apple Logo...

I'm about ready to give up, but I REALLY want this to work. Does anyone know the solution to any of these issues?

Right now this is my system:

Motherboard: ASUS AN8 SLI Deluxe
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Socket 939
Memory: 2 Gigs of Corsair

note: I also have and AMD Athlon 64 3500+, but I haven't bothered to use it because I had this other one installed. If that makes a difference...

when you're booting make sure you're pressing f8 to get to the boot options. when you go to the boot options type in -v to get to verbose mode. then read the output to see where the process is hanging.

I do nothing BUT -v, or -v -x, etc... It says all kinds of things. Is there not just a "perfect" way of installing this? I mean, I've been on the forums for two straight days and nothing works. I've burned at normal speed, slow speed, installed on IDE, SATA, given the drive "active" status, and today I even replaced the Extensions directory on the drive. There's no way that my machine just happens to be retarded. I've NEVER had a problem installing Leopard, it has ALWAYS installed without a hitch, I've just never been able to get past it's first reboot. I've never been able to set up an account...

Easy there... technically a Apple made computer is still a "PC"... It's just a general wording, since Windows is the most popular platform. tongue.gif

Yeah, except for the fact that there's no UI that makes any sense. Besides, who has the time (beyond trying to bloody install OS X) to learn something completely new? If you can give me solid reasons that would out weigh Server 2003 or Leopard Server, I'd love to hear 'em...

By Popular you mean broadly or commonly used, right? Because the other meaning does not apply.

3 things come to mind: have you tried installing it on another machine, then popping the hard drive into the box in question? also have you tried different ports as far as the SATA go? and then have you tried installing it to a hard drive that is hooked up via USB?

also for anyone that is reading this thread, I ended up getting the 10.5.2 server combo update installed using Devin's method. i must have typed something incorrectly earlier.

I really need some help. I guess this is an old thread, but I can not for the life of me find the "Leopard Server Packages" Just the actual dvd's. Can someone help me? can they be pulled off the DVD? or where can I find them?

Same question with a bump ;-)

Get the DVD and use pacifist to extract the package.

Earlier in the thread...someone said they found the server packages, on a website, run by Pirates in a Bay...
