Hi
These instructions are a copy of those I made available on the Uphuck forums. Firstly, be aware this is not that stable with maybe 1 in 3 boots working correctly. Also no networking, sound or USB currently. You will need a DVD with iATKOS and an ISO of GPartEd cd.
1. You must use a real DVD in a real drive. This is was done with iATKOS 1.0i R2 DVD.
2. Host machine is a Dell D620 laptop running Windows XP SP2 with VMware Workstation 6.0.2.
3. This laptop does run a real installation of iATKOS from and external USB drive, except no network.
4. The VMX file needs to be quite specific and I have included it below:
# Hacked by Donk
bios.bootDelay = "5000"
checkpoint.vmState = ""
checkpoint.vmState.readOnly = "FALSE"
config.version = "8"
deploymentPlatform = "windows"

ehci.present = "TRUE"

ethernet0.connectionType = "nat"

ethernet0.generatedAddressOffset = "0"
ethernet0.pciSlotNumber = "32"
ethernet0.present = "TRUE"
ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000"
ethernet0.wakeOnPcktRcv = "FALSE"
extendedConfigFile = "leopard.vmxf"
floppy0.autodetect = "TRUE"
floppy0.fileName = "A:"
floppy0.present = "FALSE"
guestOS = "freebsd-64"
ide0:0.fileName = "leopard.vmdk"

ide1:0.deviceType = "cdrom-raw"

ide1:0.fileName = "Z:"
ide1:0.present = "TRUE"
memsize = "768"
mks.keyboardFilter = "allow"

nvram = "leopard.nvram"
pciBridge0.pciSlotNumber = "17"
pciBridge0.present = "TRUE"
scsi0.pciSlotNumber = "-1"
scsi0.present = "FALSE"
scsi0.virtualDev = "lsilogic"
sound.autodetect = "TRUE"
sound.fileName = "-1"
sound.present = "FALSE"
svga.autodetect = "TRUE"
tools.remindInstall = "TRUE"
tools.upgrade.policy = "useGlobal"
usb.present = "FALSE"
uuid.action = "KEEP"
uuid.bios = "56 4d 50 97 29 7a 74 3f-a8 4a 39 81 24 7b c7 78"
uuid.location = "56 4d 50 97 29 7a 74 3f-a8 4a 39 81 24 7b c7 78"
virtualHW.productCompatibility = "hosted"
virtualHW.version = "6"
Note no USB, sound, floppy, serial etc.
4. The BIOS settings must be correctly setup:
a. For the 2 IDE drives you need to set 32-bit I/O to enabled.
b. The floppy disk and chip must be disabled
c. Disable all serial and parallel ports
d. Large disk mode set to other
e. Boot order to CD first then Hard drive
5. Use an IDE virtual hard disk.
6. Next boot the DVD press F8 and use the "-v cpus=1" boot parameters.
7. Once you are in the installer use the Disk Utility to create a single partition and ensure that it is MBR based. Also make sure the volume label has no spaces in it.
8. Back in the installer select the new volume and then "Customize" button. You need to select the main iATKOS install plus the Darwin X86 Bootloader. Do NOT select anything else.
9. Now sit back and wait for the installer to work. Once it wants to restart let it, but it will almost certainly fail.
10. Next use the gparted ISO as the CD for the guest and boot from that. In gparted you need to ensure the boot flag is set for the partition. Indeed the best way to do this is set the flag off, reboot and set the flag on. There was another thread on this but can't find it at the moment.
11. Right now we need to boot into the iATKOS DVD again, so mount the DVD and carry out step 6 again.
12. Get to the customize install screen and deselect everything, and then select only:
Patches --> "Remove CPUPowerManagementDriver" and "Remove Thermal kexts"
13. Again when we get to the restart let the system shutdown rather than reboot.
14. Next boot again into the BIOS and change boot order to Hard Drive and then CD. Save and power off.
15. Power on again and this time should boot from hard drive, and again use F8 with the "-v cpus=1" kernel flags.
At this point it should take you through the Leopard first start screens. There are 3 issues that I haven't resolved.
A. Restarting always leads to a segment fault. So shutdown and power off then start up again.
B. Sometimes it just won't restart with CPU fault. Best to shutdown VMware and restart.
C. Network doesn't have a MAC address. This psi probably solvable but haven't had time to finish my work on this yet.
I have uploaded an start guest configuration to http://r a p i d s h a r e.com/files/83949264/Leopard.zip.html and as an attachment here. There are only VMware files in this zip, and the hard drive is empty. I will try and add some screenshots when I get time.

thanks again!
will it work with 2 cores or only 1 core? (setup is cpus=1, i know)
great work

1 core currently. As I said it's very unreliable. As of this morning only had one successful boot. I am now trying to use legacy mode to see if it is more stable. Will report back when done.

hi, this doesn't work for me, still my iatkos gets stuck a few minutes into the installation process (at no specific points, so i can reproduce the freezing, but not the timepoint).
thanks anyway!

Hey
I've just starting the install attempt with the same specs as Donk (as in Dell D620 w/ workstation 6.0.2).
First off it wouldn't get much past finding the boot device. The setup boot would simply stall. I tried booting with -x (as well as -v cpus=1) and it gets further but now I'm presenting with the BBOD.
Any advice?
Cheers

I know it is really flakey, today won't boot at all! The other thing I did find was that occasionally power off/on the virtual machine seems to rest things and allow the system to progress through to installer. But the end results aren't good anyway so to be honest I think I am going to give up on this for now.

I had left the DVD in the drive. I find it is more reliable with it removed. So today 2 boots from 3 attempts.

i copied the .vmx setup listed by donk.....except im emulating my cdrom through daemon tools
ive gone through the instructions about 5 times and when i load the command -v cpus=1 ill get to the darwin load screen....a blue backround appears, and the beachball/pinwheel just spins and never goes any further.....no options to load or anything.....the pinwheel just spins.....i left this for about 3 hours and no progression.....is there anything im doing wrong?
on windows vista
intel core 2 duo @ 2.0ghz
4 gigz ram dual channel
HDD is SATA but i made a new 12 gig virtual disk to support freebsd
using VMware6 to emu iatkosv1.oir2 using freebsd setting or windows NT as the os setup.
plz help
thx

Yes I had the same issues as you. Firstly use a real DVD no mounted images. Also it sometimes takes several attempts to get it to work. I have just managed to do this a second time, but took several attempts to get it the point where the installer actually started.

It gets this far then stops. Any ideas?

EDIT1: Well I got a little farther when I rebooted the vm machine. But it sat there for a while and didn't go any farther.

Well this happens to me with Kalyway, and also iATKOS when use legacy boot flag. To be honest I am stuck as to an explanation. Can't understand what would be so special about my Dell D620 which allows me to install, apart from I know iATKOS will also run natively on the machine.

Would you be willing to upload your Leopard VM for others to download? Possibly as a torrent?
I am unable to get iATKOS to install in VMWare 6.0.2 on my Dell D820 and would like to see if your VM works on my machine. I am experiencing the same problems above with the blue screen and spinning icon.

So far I'm having 0 luck as well.
I got the same black screen with text that sarfa777 is showing. I read one of the following posts and tried -x cpus=1, but when I do that, then I just get the grey screen with apple logo and the spinning icon and nothing changes. Stupid grey screen with logo got me all excited that something was happening
Right now I'm doing this with vmwareWS 6.0.2, Vista Business, and iATKOS_v1.0i2
*sigh* so sad

Hey all, first post here so hi!
I'm attempting to install iATKOS v1.0i on VMware Workstation 6.0.0, but to no avail.

I have followed the instructions in this post to the letter but I keep getting the same error message popup in vmware.
Please see the following screenshots:

I also tried what a previous poster suggested, and changed "-v cpus=1" to "-x cpus=1", this gets me as far as the Apple screen but then the error message pops up again:

Any help on this is much appreciated, if it helps, my computer specs are:
Dell Vostro 1500
Windows XP Pro SP2
Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2Ghz
3GB RAM
NVidia GeForce 8600GT M
Cheers,
Tom
EDIT: Scratch that, I patched the iso with the R2 revision and I can now boot into the installer.
Only tried it once so far but it seems to be hanging on "Gathering Disk Information" after going to Utilies>Disk Utilies
Any ideas? Should I just reboot and try again?
EDIT (AGAIN): I got past that, but it then hangs on the installation progress bar... My whole machine crashed infact. So i BIG BUTTONED it and rebooted windows, opened VMware again and now it comes up with a big error log when it boots into Mac OS X telling me it wasnt installed properly etc.
I deleted the vmdk and made a new one, managed to get back into the installer and partition the new drive, it then asks me to restart with the following screen, so I did... Now everytime I reboot the virtual machine it just goes back to this same box with the option to shutdown, reboot or save/view log... help?

Can you have a look at the log contents in the guest and see if there are any errors. Then post them here.

Heh, I would but I got really frustrated and just deleted the entire VM and started again from scratch with a different VM name (Leopard this time instead of Mac OS X) and now I can't get past the spinning beachball on the blue screen that most people are experiencing lol...
I really just wanna get this working, purely for the sake of having both Linux and Mac on my XP installation.
Do you recommend adding those extra config lines that you posted at this stage? (ie. before going through installation) or are they to increase performance after its installed?
EDIT: Well I got it to the installer again, it said installing... left it for about 20 minutes and i came back from getting food to find it saying "Install Failed"... Something to do with not being able to extract the files from the package 10.5.1.Intel...

Ok, now it comes up with the error log again when I try again:
EDIT: Well, after aprox. 40 failed attempts (5 of which managed to reach the installation progress bar but never reached the end, or did and failed) I think i'm gonna give up on this for a while until there is a more stable release for VMWare

I had those same problems as you. It did eventually work. I have a new VMX file here with those monitor options. Also gone to AMD VLance network adapter and enabled USB. You can get USB running with the drivers from this thread
http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=28559, and networking with the Maxxuss driver from here
http://www.paulooi.com/2005/10/15/vmware-n...rk-mac-osx-x86/. This works with a static MAC address defined in the VMX file.

My crash log is exactly like hazed, Install just says installation could not be completed because some files could not be copied. Tried the newer vmx and now I just stuck at the start screen with the spinning beach ball. Got past the stuck beach ball all I did was disable 32bit io in the bios for both ide drives but the install still hangs at random parts. It seems like its disk read/write issues. No errors in the install log :/

Donk,
could you make a step-by-step guide of how to install using pictures and how to setup VMWare from the beginning.
Thank you

All
I have access to this
http://www.virtualization.info/2008/03/vmw...tures-list.html beta and I can tell you it is far more reliable. Once it is in public beta I will create a tutorial with pictures on setting this up.

Does 6.03 make a difference?
Btw: how much physical ram is there in your D620?

I've used 6.0.2 and 6.0.3 and sort of OK, but variable success rates. You may want to try Server 2.0 beta which has a later code base then 6.0 of Workstation. Fusion doesn't work. The laptop has 4Gb RAM and 2Gb assigned to the Leopard virtual machine.

What's the spec of the 2x2GB memory modules you plugged in?
I thought D620 had a max of 2GB.
Thx!
EDIT: just ordered 2x Kingston Technology 2GB DDR2-667 Module. Hope it is the right choise

Donk,
Can you tell me which version of VMWare you created your configuration file on?
Which is the best version to use to install iATKOS successfully?

Hi, everyone
At last I passed from the gray loading screen, but I know get stuck at the blue screen with the whirling ball. When the boot is loading, I get a message saying "skipping kernel link data generation". Can that be the problem? Or how much time does the installer needs to load? (One hour or so?)

Hi again ,
I've tried installing many times with different settings, and what I find in common is that every time I receive messages saying that the file system is read-only. Can the problem be related with the installer not being able to write the files it needs on the virtual hard disk? I am going to try with a pre-allocated hard disk and see what happens.

No way, the blue background and the spinning ball is the farthest it goes.

Hi CallPlayer,
The furthest I have got is it installing.
I got it to work by mounting the ISO in Deamon Tools, Using the config file that Donk has posted in the first post, Followed the guide and got up to that point.
I get a BSD error that contains Major 14, Minor 4
I also getthe Read Only error regarding the HD
I will post any progress as I get it.
All the best
