Today, Apple introduced a new Mac Pro for all to see that uses Intel's Penryn processors. It also received several other improvements as well. It comes standard with Two 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors, 2GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB, 320GB Serial ATA, and 16x SuperDrive with double-layer support. You can have up to two 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors, 32GB of RAM, NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 1.5GB, and each hard drive can reach 1TB(4TB in total). The top of the line Mac Pro can handle up to an impressive eight 30 inch displays. Apple have also introduced a new Xserve with similar configurations.

Impressive! It would seem that the GeForce 8800 GT is also available:

QUOTE
For motion graphics, 3D modeling, rendering, or animation, you’ll need the greater graphics horsepower offered by the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT with 512MB of GDDR3 memory and latest-generation NVIDIA GPU technology.

Eight 30" displays? Wow...
Synaesthesia
I see there is an option to get one 2.8ghz quad core processor. I wonder if you can get that, and then later drop in another processor... (link) Of course these processors aren't even available yet. (1600fsb)

Anyway, I can't wait for the apple store to come on, to see how you can configure this baby...
Fabio Leite
Did back apple store now and everything processors are quad mono or dual. Do fear!!!!

8 screens, cell multiplications,.... multi user desktop?

now if you could add 8 keyboards, and have 8 people use the quad at the same time,
they could sell it like hotcakes , donuts, croissants ,!!! put it in starbucks, and have people cruise, testdrive it,...

anybody knows how to do multidesktop with osx ?

of course, would like to see, full hardware aka graphics support, and not some x11 hack with remote to itself,...
but I'll take the first too.

what's also interesting hd2600xt,.... looks like the new mac pro's are quieter than regular pc boxes,
that's the biggest reason for me, besides getting tired of playing with kext files.
Synaesthesia
Yeah, the base system seems to be the best value config. The processor upgrades are way too expensive for the extra power you get. Especially the 3.2ghz! If you wanna save some money, the quad core (single proc) is not bad I guess.

For all of the Mac Pro owners out there wanting pricing and shipping info for the 8800 GT. I've spent the last hour trying to get a straight answer out of Apple and the only thing they've said so far is that the card is not yet for sale as an individual purchase. Since this is true, pricing is no where to be found either.

I think he meant pricing for individual cards, not as an upgrade.

Considering Apple's usual pricing, an additional $200 for an 8800GT seems like a good deal smile.gif
Hyper X
Dear lord, when someone gets a hack going to allow for 2 video cards and 4 monitors. I may just wet myself!

Off to the store to buy some Depends *JIC*

Yeah, I meant that the price for the individual card is not yet available. And I sure hope that 400 for that card is not the case...The same model for the PC sells for 270.00. The people at MacRumors have found the following: UK 8800 Upgrade So it seems that a $400 price tag may be right on when its available here in the US. I wonder how long it's going to be before we start seeing a bios flash for exsisting cards now that this one's out.

I want one!

Well, it seems that 10.5.2 can't be too far either when they're starting to sell 8800GT cards with Mac's. Because they'll need those drivers! smile.gif
erei33
Wow, this is so unexpected: Apple has finally released a workstation thats not ridiculously overpriced! I am impressed, this new Mac Pro is phenomenal! My only dislike is the use of the Radeon HD 2600 XT as the base video card: why not use the Radeon HD 3850?

I can now say this about the Mac Pro: I want one wink.gif
djXtreme
Im liking the pricing structure. A Single Quad-core model (with wireless k/m) is around £1400. Thats not bad at all for apple's standards!

YEP ! I think that 10.5.2 is on the way within the next hours/days ?!?

djXtreme
I'd guess around the same time as the 5-day shipping guessed at by apple uk store?
Soündless
thats orgasmic

censored2.gif Now I have to clean my KB... One day when I'm old and retired and wealthy I'll be able to afford one...

/me wants the 3.2GHz biggrin.gif

and for those who rant about Apple not using 8800GT --> tongue.gif

And now even with Q FX 5600 with 1.5GB
aqua-mac
Did anyone spot that the Quadro 5600 costs more than the standard macpro! That is mad. Can't wait to get hold of the rom (Hopefully)!! Would be nice to get 8800 GTX/8800GT going in a mac pro to give users a few more options.
Special-K
I guess they're not waiting for MacWorld for this announcement. It's only a week away too.

I think he'll mention it. As like an overview. It'll be like 'Blah blah blah 10.5.2 blah blah blah iPhone SDK blah blah blah Oh we have a new Mac Pro and Xserve.

WHY WOULD YOU NEED 32GB OF RAM?

Either you are running multiple virtualizations, or you're compensating for a lack in a certain personal area.

I'm going to go price one out...I was planning on a Gateway Quad Core, but this might change my mind.
dark4181
nice. apple is finally moving to a higher mem and fsb speed too.. though i wish they were using 1066 for the memory speed

still, nice to have that speed upgrade.. hopefully the new laptops have the same or similar speed increases. especially with pc's moving into ddr3 territory this year
nagal
Had I had any clue Apple would have released a single cpu MacPro I would not have built mine. Oh well smile.gif

Mac Guguen
Gosh, i am totally interested in the new Mac Pros

but doesnt it mean we can buy a GeForce 8800GTX to replace the display card and do SLI with it??

i mean if Mac allows a high end display such as GeForce 8800GT to be on the comp, im guessing that they know we're gona play SLI / Crossfire right?

Hopefully the ROM taken from the 8800GT will allow, in a round about way, this to be possible. I don't expect SLI to ever work on a MacPro, simply because very few game developers develop for the Mac, so the need for 3D acceleration of that kind just isn't there.
Mac Guguen
so the new mac pros allows SLI as what you said, but how will it be plugged is it 2x x8??

and will Mac Pros be able to run sli?
BJMoose
I just ordered an iMac to go with my Mac Pro, but my Mac Pro quad my soon wind up on eBay. Dual quad 2.8s with faster frontside bus and and a 2600xt that can handle 2 dual dvi's sounds good for the price. I don't see any mention of bluetooth on the apple site. Is it standard or did I just miss it?
spanakorizo
w8ing for the 10.5.2 update hope i fix my crashes with 8800gt angel.png
icyderguru
So Tiger as of now and Leopard as of now wont work with the new HD 2600/8800GT Mac Pros because the lack of a kext for the card?
jackt283
It's so funny and (just crap) that they deck this awesome thing out with 8 cores and put a puny 320GB hard drive in.

How much more is a 500GB, like $20? I just can not comprehend it? 500GB HD's just sound and feel better. Its an even number - so if you 4 then you have a terabyte. Now if you want a terabyte on this baby you are going to have to scrap the 320 or get some expensive 750s or 1TBs.... JOKE!

They think they "know pro" they think they no power. They don't. They're just damn good at imitating it.

I see what you're saying here, Apple is always selling underpowered computers. However, compared to their past Mac Pros (which were very, very overpriced) the new Mac Pro is a terrific deal! Also, HD space isn't that important. If you were going to complain about HDs, why not complain about 7,200RPM as the standard speed, rather than 10,000RPM or 15,000RPM? Plus, they need to come out with a liquid cooled mac (like the G5) sometime soon. With two 3.2 Ghz quad cores, a 15,000RPM HD and an 8800GT I bet the current/new Mac Pro is roasting!
Numberzz
HD space to me is important. I have about 1.5TB total with all my hard drives, and about 800GB free.

i'd hope they do a better job with liquid cooling this time around, i wouldnt want a repeat of the 2.7ghz towers that leaked

The base 8-core is decently priced. Price out a pair of QX9650s and mobo, case, dvd, hdd, ram, fw800, VGA, keyboard, mouse...... Apple is getting more competitive.

Apple, you have my attention. cool.gif
bh2
Can I have one please?
MiJKa
It's GETTING more competitive, but it's not quite there yet tongue.gif

Good to see they're using the 8800 series, though I'm surprised they haven't added a more serious ATI card than the 2600XT :/

as for the 32GBs of ram.... well, lol, the compensation theory sounds viable to me tongue.gif Although, someone came up with a new, QUAD HD format, so they could be looking forward to something actually able to work with it, without requiring a farm of PCs in a storeroom. tongue.gif
spanakorizo
even a normal mapro with 2 quad cpus and 2gbram 8800gt etc etc costs 4000$
this is not cheap if you ask me ...
it's double price

I can has? My dual 2.0GHz feels powerless now. tongue.gif

Can i know where else that i can find an overpriced computer like that?
Come on! 500 bucks for two 1 GB RAM? 550 bucks for a 1TB HD? With the full configuration, i could buy a CAR!
But come to think of it, i'd buy one, just for showing off.....

I know! The 2600 is not a 'pro' card. C'mon Apple, why didn't you use the 3850/70 as the default?!

Yep, for the first time ever (In my case, this is the first time I've ever really wanted a Mac. OS X I've always drooled over!)
QUOTE

Hopefully by the next generation/revision they'll be priced like a Dell or HP (i.e. a good deal tongue.gif). Still, in terms of price to performance this is a huge step over the last Mac Pro.
Boot Camp
I'm lickin' my chops just looking at it! (Even though it looks the same as the old ones! laugh.gif )
Keep it up Apple!
