Full Version: Bad Axe 2 & Quad Core based Hackintosh

I researched and read the forums in order to come up with the most compatible Hackintosh hardware I could get. My goal is to be able to use Final Cut Pro in a STABLE way and edit ProRes 4.2.2 footage in real time with as many video effects I can. I've read reports on the forums about people who build stable render farms. lol sounds incredible and possible. I don't want yet a render farm. I would be happy for now with a stable HD editing system where I will add a Intensity Pro PCI-e card after a while.

I just ordered:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Intel BLKD975XBX2KR LGA 775 Intel 975X ATX Intel Motherboard - OEM - $189.99
XFX PVT73GUGF3 GeForce 7600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Supported Video Card $87.99
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor Model BX80562Q6600 $279.99$274.99
G.SKILL (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL4D-4GBPK $154.99$114.99
MASSCOOL Stars-700 Silver thermal grease - $1.99
Subtotal $669.95
Tax $55.27
FedEx Express Saver (UPS sucks) $14.49
Order Total $739.71
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I already have 2 cases & power supply. I like though the MacPro look alike case found in this Final Cut Pro Hackintosh wish list:
http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/wishli...tNumber=5277305
If everything will work I will buy that case, remove the floppy and replace it with some fan control bay/card reader, front panel audio or something.
Oh, I have 1 ATA hard drive X 350gb handy too. There where reports of not booting from ATA. Will see. If not I will buy a SATA. I want my dvd-writer and boot HDD on ATA though and later on to add 4 more SATA HDD. The Marvell SATA controller is known not working on Leopard; I'm kinda bothered by that but not so much. Maybe a driver will come out. I won't have money for 8 SATA anytime soon anyway. My pocket is burned right now.
I had good but mostly bad experiences before making a AMD with Tiger work and I said that I will never waste my time to build a Hackintosh again and I spent $2000 on a MacBook Pro 2.2Ghz 15" which I'm using right now. Since I got this laptop, my old AMD PC sleeps mostly so I took it apart and put it on Ebay, got couple of hundred dollars for it.
I just love Mac and more I love to build and play with this junk. I'm a Hackintosh software/hardware junkie, addict and I'm not even good at it. I can't wait for my wife to see the bill. Love you guys, love this forums.
I'll keep you posted with my failures hahahaha PEACE!

P.S. about the wish list:
- I picked Bad Axe 2 & Quad6600 because various dudes reported good experiences with it + there is a superb INSTALLATION GUIDE (click here) made by the Great Weaksauce12.
- I picked XFX PVT73GUGF3 GeForce 7600GT 256MB because is not too cheap but not too expensive and is reported working OUT OF THE BOX. Very important for me as I had huge problems with video cards in my old Hackintosh failures.
- I picked G.SKILL 4GB F2-6400CL4D-4GBPK Memory because was the cheapest dual channel 2x 2Gb with Cas Latency 4 and 4-4-4-12 timing (I will end with 8Gb)
- I picked the Linkworld case just because it looks a little bit like a Mac Pro and will make me feel sane. (I hate the floppy and i will remove it). My opinion is that you can use the power supply that comes with it for a while, but if you are going to add crazy devices on it, just order a 2 rails one. This one will do: MSI TurboStream 600W.
- I will dig more to find how DVD-RW work. I have 3 different ones in my house now hat I will try.
- I will rip that sucker floppy OFF!!! smile.gif , so the Sunbeam Silver Panel looked good as you will plug the USB and audio in the back not on the mortherboard + the FAN controls come handy for less storm when I need QUIET!!!! The silver is out of stock but they have the BLACK version. Supports windows 98/98se/2000/xp and Mac OS 9.x/Mac OS sais in there smile.gif

Look into an 8600GT or so.
Drivers from 10.5.2 seem to work for it.
There is a full thread on this and its a good card.
Good choice on Mobo,CPU,Memory, and PSU. People skimp on PSU and then pay for it. But they never realize its their PSU.
Otherwise you're build looks pretty solid.

Forget about 8800GT. Next, I need Nvidia 8800 GTX flashed to Quadro FX 5600 because I don't play games.
PNY Quadro FX 5600 - $2,800
Nvidia 8800 GTX - $460

I received the parts and I assembled the computer. POWER! To be able to follow weaksauce's guide I need the Leopard original disk. I'm still 50% on my way to the store. I will get it soon. In the mean time I tried Kalyway and TOH RC2 versions and with both I get a weird thing. The computer boots ok and after a while, before getting to the arrow/selection screen, SHUTS DOWN. I thought it is a hrdware problem so I went ahead and installed UPHUCK 1.3 (worked without problems, see the XBench results attached). What could be the problem? Thoughts?

I got the same exact setup as you -- no lie... same EXACT acessories, except I have the Q6700 and 8GB of RAM. My system works 100% on iATKOS. It was acting funky the first couple of boots, but I ran a couple updates from Apple and I have been experiencing less and less problems as time goes on. The only patch I did was the audio and I haven't touched any of the system's files. It's as if the OS is fixing itself over time? Hahah, not sure but anyways you should have a nice stable setup there for Leopard!

Perfectly legit. I'm selling my GTS and buying a GTX specifically for that mod. I'll report back when it's done, going to take me a couple weeks to scrounge up the cash wink.gif

Glad to hear everyone is enjoying my guide!

Does it not look real? ^^ If you want additional info, just send aquamac a pm or something ('aqua-mac' here @ insanelymac, profile etc here)... This thread is about his hack pro w/ the 8800GTX flashed to Quadro FX 5600. His work is insane smile.gif
All the best,

I am compiling a list of known, working video cards on the Intel Bad Axe 2. There is a lot of variation when it comes to video cards and actually getting them to work. If you have a BA2 board, please post the Brand/Model of Video Card you are using, along with exactly what software. For example, "PNY 256mb 7300GT - NVinject 1.6". I will add this to the first post of this thread so that people can pick and choose a compatible card and get the correct software more easily. Thanks!

Yes, it's real. I've talked to aquamac (he's helped out with my next guide revision, in fact!) and he's a great guy. I am currently selling my 8800 GTS in order to purchase an 8800 GTX for modding. I will report back when it's done wink.gif

I also ordered today all these same components.. Shame that this badaxe is old board and wont understand newer coming up processors.. But maybe that q6600 is enought for few years.

That linkwolrf case is cool but why there is that floppy drive bay..? Who needs that. It could be much cooler if you buy aluminium net (maybe that what people use when tuning car bumpers) and fix the front.

But thanks for sharing your setup.

I have a very similar setup. Same mobo, same CPU, XFX 7900GT.
I didn't need any guide to install iATKOS or Kalyway. Only, if you use iATKOS, read their readme very carefully.
If you use Kalyway customize the install with a lot of good common sense.
I went for Kalyway in the end, it worked smoother.
I used Natit for my GPU, it seemed to work the best.
The sound problem was solved with this how to:

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...95&hl=sound

However keep in mind that the Bad Axe 2 use 2 different sound cards.
Georgiles
My copy of Leopard got lost so I ended up using Kalyway installed on separate ATA hdd. Installed the original update 10.5.1 over. I used weksause's sound driver and some of his instructions in terminal. I did not test the sound input yet. TOO BUSY. This system flies, I would definitely recommend his quad core setup.

What does not work:
In System Preferences --> Network shows Cable Unplugged. If I refresh the connection by selecting BootP at CONFIGURE and back to DHCP then it gets the connection and the internet works. So I need to refresh the network everytime I start the computer. It still shows CABLE UNPLUGGED but the internet works, the newtork light blinks properly.
Any ideas how do I solve this problem?
How do I trick the computer to say in there: CONECTED ... currently active instead of cable unplugged?

UPDATE:
Now the network works perfect.
1. Booted in windows and updated the latest bios.
2. I extracted the 10.4.9 IOFamilyNetworking.kext (find it attached to download here)
3. I copied it in System/Library/Extensions folder
4. Open Terminal
sudo -s
enter your password
chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions
5. Open Disk Utility and Repair Permissions again to make sure
6. restart and voila.

SWEET! THANKS FOR THE FIX

i assume this fix is working for you still?

My HackPro works perfectly, yes, super stable. Onboard sound output works.
I did not test Mic INPUT nor the other 4 SATA as I do not need them now. When I will need the extra SATA I'm sure the kext will be out there.
I got myself for sound this for $270:

Otherwise Windows Sucks, but I have paralells installed and i run windows aps directly from mac without restart when i need it.

UPDATE: jul/4/08
the system still works perfectly.

Hi!
Georgiles, can you try this test? Is a very good tool to compare with other hackintosh and Mac's
Thank's.
The test (from Macuarium, a extense mac users forum): Macutest
And a lot of results: Results
Pd: I think I'll copy your setup if the result is good
