EDIT 14th January 2008:
Software Protector Suite Updated, now works with Leopard too.

Upek realeased previous version before Leopard was released and a note on their site said thar version 1.00 will work with Leopard, now it works.

If you enrolled your finger with the previous version possibly the software will alert you that your winger was already enrolled but you can erase all previous enrollments.

1.- Go to http://www.upek.com/solutions/mac/default.asp and register to download the application preview.

2.- Install it and select the options to login with fingerprint scan or password

3.- Reboot

4.- Login does not work with fingerprint scan because it does not have any of your fingerprints registered

5.- Run the Protector Suite Assistant and register your fingerprints follow the tutorial if you never did it before.

6.- Logout

7.- Login with your Finger tongue.gif

I was searching for applications that support fingerprint readers on Mac, my surprise was that the company that made the software included in the Dell XPS M1330 is announcing the preview application for the mac, and also they make a USB fingerprint scanner that (as I suspected) uses the same biometric coporocessor (Thomson), so the rest was very easy.

cool!

Yeah, I'm pretty excited biggrin.gif

Anyone know where I can buy this in Canada? Amazon.com won't ship it.

Or is this Dell one compatible? Dell part number WH177 it says it's an Upek.

Thanks!

mathdude1284
does this work for the fingerprint readers made by microsoft?
macgirl
I don't think so, but you can try with this: http://www.neurotechnologija.com/vf_sdk.html
they have a list of supported devices here: http://www.neurotechnologija.com/scanners.html

One of the best things about our old PC was that we had a APC fingerprint scanner for it. We loved it. Unfortunately APC won't support the Mac, we've begged them for years but they keep saying that no one else with a Mac wants this feature so it's not worth their time to write the drivers. Later on I'll see if this software works with the APC scanner.

THANKS macgirl for bringing this topic up smile.gif

BTW - Just noticed this in the readme file:

"There are some problems for users having FileVault activated."
HackBook Pro
My laptop's integrated fingerprint scanner works great! Thanks so much!

If you don't have a notebook with a UPEK fingerprint reader, you can get a cool USB peripheral.

Did this program work with your APC scanner??

Colonel Ingus
NO! Infact it almost messed up our entire system. Luckily we had a backup.

macgirl, have you had any issues with the upek suite crashing when trying to set up your fingerprint profile? I have a Sony VAIO SZ Notebook with the same fingerprint scanner as your dell. I can't seem to get the software to run long enough to set up a profile. Any suggestions?

-Jason
macgirl
Never, which Mac OS X version do you have?

The only thing that I don't like now is that there is no option to left the Auto Login working as normal, and if I dont pass the finger in certain time it ask for admin user and password but easy to take back to Fnger Scan login by pressing the "Esc" key.

I wrote to Upek, I said I would like to Auto Login is not afected by the suite.
Jason_Thames
10.4.10 w/ 8.10.1 kernel. Newest SMBios from Netkas' site. Seems to be unstable only in the setup app after login; therefore I can't set up a profile because the sensor crashes each time it ask me for input. I hope they will continue to progress with this software as I would quite like to use it.

BUMP for new version released, see post #1

I was able to download and install the Protector Suite, but after going through the tutorial, and trying to setup enrollment, it appears it won't register any of my fingers.

-I finish tutorial
-Setup with users able to create, modify, delete // Login w/ pw or swipe
-Keychain on or off
-Click index finger and swipe to enroll

Error
"This fingerprint has already been enrolled!"

I've tried this with multiple fingers, to no success. No one is enrolled. No options are available to do anything except enroll when starting the app.

Is there a way to reset the settings? Google options are limited to PC fixes and deleting registry keys.
macgirl
Yes you can erase all enrollments (even if there are no previous), that worked for me.

On windows the softare asks where do you want to put the enrollments (hard disk or the device itself), I guess that if you already enrolled on windows/other it says that, but could be another error because I tried with fingert that I never enrolled on windows ohmy.gif

Thanks, this worked great for me on my Dell D630 biggrin.gif

I suppose I should get around to setting this up properly in 'doze and linux now tongue.gif

Another part ticked off in the list to get this laptop working fully with leopard biggrin.gif

Update:
I guess the problem was that when I registered my fingers on my right hand in Vistax86, then deleted the OS to install Leopard, it kept the fingerprints in the scanner (HW and not the SW).

When I registered someone else's finger, I was able to make an account and then finally delete the other user's fingerprints. The option wasn't available until I made the first account! =( Don't register all your fingers on 1 OS!

This doesn't happen to work for Authentec AES1610 does it? sad.gif
00Diabolic ~~
I tried this on my lenovo n200 which uses I guess a different companies finger print scanner. Anyone else get it to work on a lenovo?

AuthenTec Inc AES2501A is what i have.

I guess never expected to be using my finger print reader in OSX anyway.

Anyone have a hint for me?

THANKS

It almost 4am and I didn't have anyone to help me so I used one of my toes. Afterwards I was able to go in and deletes all fingerprints. Thanks for the tip!

I have a built in TouchChip fingerprint sensor (Vaio TZ) and despite the fact that it's recognised by the system profiler (Under USB it has a fingerprint sensor which has its ID and Vendor TouchChip), the program kept saying that there's no fingerprint sensor detected. It's so weird. Any idea?
macgirl
Is it connected to the USB bus?

On windows does it work with UPEK drivers?
Sophitia
It originally comes with Project Suite QL from UPEK for Windows.
Yes it is connected to USB bus. It's reported in the Profiler under USB section.
Is yours the same?
macgirl
Yes, sure. very weird, I'm out of ideas.
Sophitia
I read that the driver's supposed to work only for the external Eikon fingerprint reader. Maybe yours were luckily attached to the same USB port controller so the program recognized it when searching through that controller, but mine was not.

Thank you anyway. I think I might try other program and one of them might work. The Upek interface is nice though >.< I hope I might have some luck with it someday ^^;;
macgirl
Yes, maybe in a future release, initially the first release didn't work on Leopard.
Sophitia
Just 1 quick question, my Fingerprint Scanner showed up under AppleUSBUHCI section while my Generic USB Hub showed up under AppleUSBEHCI. Is that the same for you? (UHCI is the regular Universal USB, the EHCI is the enhanced one which is shown as "USB High-Speed Bus" under the USB section. It's strange every devices of mine were shown up on there (the webcam, bluetooth, WWAN modem and the hub) but only Fingerprint sensor showed up under UHCI. Maybe it's just the way my computer is built. Maybe that's also why it did not work. My theory is the program only looked at the EHCI devices to look for the sensor.

The question is: Is yours the same?
Chrysaor
Fingerprint reader shows up under UHCI. There is no need for it to use high-speed bus, unlike webcam.

Did you choose to save the fingerprint enrollments on the device? if yes that's probably areason why is workin on one OS and not i another, if not I don't know what causes the problem.

You can erase the fingerprint enrollments and setup to save on the hard disk instead, you need to do this on both OSes.

af for the sound card there is no conflict between the fingerprint scanner software and the sound card driver.

Remember that the sound card driver is experimental and we all have issues with it, try the tricks to gain sound again.
THe KiNG
AuthenTec Inc. AES1610
Tried to mes up with dev/vendor id's in app info.plist with no luck
Also tried VeriFinger...dosent support my scaner.
Too bad I really like this app sad.gif
Like 00Diabolic sad...any hints or how we can add more scanner support?
MacD@vi
cool!!
It works perfectly on my laptop!!
Xenn0X
my build in fingerprint reader now also works fine thnx!
it was already detected by mac os but did not had any software. now you need to cut my fingers to get in my hack smile.gif
wuldfasche
If i lock my screen in OSX 10.5.4 iAtkos and come back to unlock after a long time it has a message saying the finger input has timed out and to try clicking retry.

Once i click retry it swipes my finger ok and then just hangs...

Anyone experience that?

curveball692
So I must have un-scannable finger prints, because regardless how I try it, or which finger I use, it always reports "Too short". Vista was having issues reading my prints as well. Could my finger print reader be bad on my new XPS M1330? And how would I go about testing it to see if I need to return my laptop?

*edit* nevermind, I did exactly what the Tutorials said not to do, and got it working. Go figure!

Is it your fingerprint reader an "Authen AES2501A"? In my Hp 6710b laptop it's not even detected by Leopard.
How did you get it to work? Thanks
fireofanor
I've also tried that (protector suite1.2) on my Lenovo N100 (AuthenTec Inc AES2501A) and it doesnt work.. but i see my fingerprint sensor in system profiler under usb devices (10.5.2 vanilla).. Can anyone help ?

Fingerprint Sensor:
Version: 6.23
Bus Power (mA): 500
Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
Product ID: 0x2580
Vendor ID: 0x08ff
Chrysaor
There is a new version up on their site. (1.2 (build 08-171.70048))

Anyone figured out how to use autologin?
macgirl
Yes, I edited the /etc/authorization, Upek made a backup inside the file as mechanisms_backup, so I rename to its original state and then new one as mechanisms_upek, there is also another section with "_backup" but I think that it is the part where it ask for admin password.

I would like if they had similar to the windows couterpart that permits auto-login but if you log-off it asks for your password/fingerprint.
Chrysaor
Thanks, works nicely, removed the login authentication, kept the admin password authentication.
