Lately, this topic has come up at school, and considering today is the 10th, i might as well ask what my fellow InsaelyMac users think.

Do you think the U.S. governmant should make September 11th a memorial day (even if you dont live here)?

No, I don't think so.
I've heard enough about 9/11. All the conspiracies, and all the crap about the war in Iraq and the continuing lack of any way out and the lack of anything going in in Afghanistan, and I don't want another reminder of it. Remembering the day is perfectly acceptable, but a day off for it? Out of reason.

well, i think they should, whether the government or 18(or 19) arabs with razor blades did it. a lot of people died that day

Any sicko bastard that spends my tax dollars on a memorial for something that their little elitist friends pulled on in the first place will get a letter saying they won't be getting my income tax anymore.

No. Last time I checked, the attack on Pearl Harbor isn't a holiday. This is no different.

Thousands of people around the world die every day for the stupidest reasons, this is no different....sorry....

I think it's a good idea - lots of people died that day.

While we are at it, we should have a memorial for every time lots of people die.
So we need a memorial day for the flooding in Bangladesh, the Darfur crisis, Harold Shipman's victims and the Hiroshima bombings.

Bingo. A 9/11 Memorial Day would be a waste of tax dollars. I really wish you could choose where your taxes go to. For me the voucher would like this:
[To pay for]
Education
Police/Fire/Rescue
Large Military (For defensive purposes *only*)
Infrastructure maintenance.
[Not to pay for]
Everything else.

I am so sick of how wasted my tax dollars are. I don't care that Cindy in NYC has 3 kids, is pregnant with another, and is broke. It's not my fault that shes broke. I shouldn't have to pay for her meals.
Iraq is probably the biggest waste of tax money ever. I don't care if Iraqis are oppressed. At least Saddam kept those barbarians (radical shi'ites and sunnis) in check.

Well they are already building the freedom tower or whatever its called. It makes me kinda sick inside, but not because its using my tax money, but because its going to be more of a memorial then a trade center.

On a side note: Was that "commie" comment aimed at me or did it just feel like that. Maybe you shouldve said commies instead. Make it plural so it sounds aimed more widely then at the original poster


Well to me, Im glad Im paying for those who are in need. I know its not my fault, but if taxes werent so open-ended as they are now, people would never choose to give money to pay for the people who do make a difference but that never get recognition, or certain groups and organizations wouldnt get the funding they need. But i do agree that iraq is huge waist of money, but hey, the government needs to blow milliions of dollars a day on something.... (edit: that was sarcastic btw, dont take it literally)

Well helping those in need is important, but for me.. it's at the bottom of the list. There is only so much money to go around, and the entire list can never be covered. IMO, American Education is failing. No Child Left behind was a mistake. Think of all the money spent on welfare. What if, instead of giving low income familys money... they gave students of low income familys scholarships. That's teaching a man to fish, rather than giving him fish on the first of each month.

I dont think a lot of people would want to observe the tragic events by having a memorial day and taking the day off work. I think they would rather mark the event in an informal way, by themselves.

There maybe worries that people will forget that date but I do think that this is one day no one will ever forget. Even if you tried to forget what day it was, you simply couldn't. You might forget the date of the events in Hiroshima but you cannot forget sept 11 - the day known by its digits.

I disagree. I don't think it should be made into a memorial day of any sort, but I think your comment is nonsensical. Pearl Harbor was purely military. It was one army vs another in a time of war. 9/11 was an attack on civilians and their way of life, and a country's beliefs on the whole. So in that respoect they are very different.

I agree. Pity that so many Americans seem to be in favour of prison sentences and the death penalty, but don't want to spend their tax money for social security and free health care.

I kind of agree here. It would have been nice to you know, ask them if they wanted democracy or some other type of government once Saddam was toppled

Oh yeah. And Saddam Hussein's regime didn't put the US into $9,000,000,000,000 debt.

Social Security is very important but Free Health Care is expensive. Perhaps, make health care mandatory and if you a poor the government could pay for it. I really don't know, my ideal society is one with low, low taxes.

Which is part of the reason why that'll be almost £27.50 in a few years time
