I quite happy that my 10.4.8 is working so far and i know that there is no driver for the 8800gts, but is there any way to change the res from 1024x768 to 1280x1024? any config file?

You can edit the "com.apple.Boot.plist" file found in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration.
Add these two lines:
<key>Graphics Mode</key>
<string>1280x1024x32</string>
Depending on the capabilities of your gfx card and monitor, you might possibly be able to go as high as 1600x1200. Unlikely to get any widescreen resolutions though. Don't forget to repair permissions and reboot.
