Full Version: New Mac OS x86 Search Engine
InsanelyMac Forum > InsanelyMac Lounge > Reader News and Reviews
~pcwiz
Hi,

I have created a new search engine using Google Co-op that searches OSx86 related content on the web. It indexes many blogs and major sites already including:

InsanelyMac Forums
InsanelyMac
OSx86 Project Wiki
Digg (osx86 content only)
...And Much more

Check it out here: http://www.google.com/coop/cse?cx=01393798...9%3Aj334zhfu29c

Any feedback regarding the search engine is greatly appreciated.

If you want to add your site to the engines indexing list, please contact PCWiz using this form: http://pcwiz.50webs.com

PCWiz will add your site to the list within minutes for FREE.

Thanks

many thanks man
Numberzz
thank you so much, way better than the crappy one we have right now!

You're very very welcome. If you see any sites that are not found my my search engine, please tell me through a post on this forum or by sending an email to pcwiz.support@gmail.comSorry, typo. Contact PCWiz here to submit your site to the engine:http://pcwiz.50webs.com/form.htm

I've set up URL redirection for the engine. The new URL is:

http://www.osx86search.co.nr

thank you, insanelymac's search is {censored}!!
skyhighmac
Awesome, another person created one but it was really bad. Google has much better search indexing.

If for some reason the above service becomes unavailable, one can always use plain google this way:
http://www.google.ca/search?q=word+site%3A...insanelymac.com

Use your own string instead of "word".

This is only for insanelymac; for other sites you replace "forum.insanelymac.com" with the domain you want to search.
~pcwiz
Thanks all. I'll continue to update the engine as OSx86 becomes more popular biggrin.gif
jacksont123
could you please change the colors to normal, it's a bit easier on the eyes
just a suggestion
~pcwiz
Sure thing. Also, the www.osx86search.co.nr redirection system doesn't seem to be working today. Use the old URL, it works:

http://google.com/coop/cse?cx=013937989978...9%3Aj334zhfu29c
~pcwiz
A couple notes and things about the search engine
  • The colors have been changed back to normal because the new scheme was apparently not "easier on the eyes"
  • The redirection is back up today, www.osx86search.co.nr
  • A small list of new blogs and sites have been added to the search list
  • The search engine now indexes video sites Google Video and YouTube for OSx86 related videos
  • The search engine also now indexes 2 clean torrent sites for OSx86 torrents, Demonoid (=the green demon) and Torrentz
Have fun with the new features but remember...OSx86 torrents only for educational purposes hysterical.gif

People, the engine just keeps getting better by the second. I've added a good-looking, simple styled new front end the the engine because the Google page looked to business-like and n00bish. Here is the new link:http://pcwiz.50webs.com/osx86search/

The URL redirection service http://www.osx86search.co.nr has already been linked to our new URL. Check out the new design and tell me what you think thumbsup_anim.gif

Please support this search engine project by promoting it on the web. All you have to do is:Thats all you have to do! Please, everyone who finds the search engine useful, just do it once. Do it once and you'll never have to do it again. smile.gif

Updates on the search engine

Another update...Man I'm doing a lot today...

I noticed that when I added the Google Video content, there was a lot of junk coming in to the engine as well so I took the time to...believe it or not...manually add the links to every OSx86 video on Google Video. Took a loong time. Note that most of the Google Video stuff will not be linked to a Google Video site, but to the source site the video came from. For example. YouTube. So theres no use searching for specifically Google Video on the search engine.

Another thing, I noticed that there was a lot of irrelevant Netscape junk coming up in search results so I took the time, once again to manually add the links to all the OSx86 only related content on Netscape sites.

And also, there is a bit of irrelevant iPhone related stuff coming up on the engine. There isn't too much but I figure most of the iPhone junk came from InsanelyMac...No offense to the iPhone lovers on the forum. whistle.gif I did my best to erradicate

Removing irrelevant results

I would like and need your help in removing irrelevant things that are not relevant to OSx86. Heres how:

If you see an irrelevant result, please record the URL down somewhere. Heres where the URL will be in the result:

The URL is highlighted in red. So record this down. Now send a message to pcwiz using this web form. In the E-mail address field, enter your e-mail address. In the Message field, type this:

Irrelevant URL: <url>

Replace <url> with the irrelevant URL you recorded. Click Submit and PCWiz will remove the URL as soon as possible.

I have added video sites to the search engine but not a lot seem to come up in search results. Guess we'll have to live with it....

Great work. Ive already made good use of it thismorning.
Neonkoala
Linked, great work.

Opinions needed

Thanks for digging. I just need everyones opinion on this: I've removed the InsanelyMac iPhone forum from the search engines list. I need everyone's opinion on this. I just thought it would be sensible since my search engine searches OSx86 related content and iPhone doesn't exactly fit the bill.

Support

Another way you can help the search engine by promoting it is to put a small link on your OSx86 related site if you have one. I'm not going to force anyone to do this. The search engine is free to use and it will always be free to anyone who wants to use it. Its just that if not many people are going to use the engine (I'm sure lots of people at InsanelyMac will) its not much use to to keep updating it with long hours of work. Note that I'm NOT going to stop updating the engine any time soon.

Updates

I've added a few new sites to the engine, including neonkoala.co.uk. Thanks for the tip-off neonkoala.

This is awesome! I just redesigned the entire engine again. It looks great. That front end I put up yesterday still looked boring so I redesigned the engine site again with a fabulous site template. A couple things:To submit new sites to the engine or report irrelevant stuff, please use this new form.

One challenge for me was to make the new search engine site compatible with IE and Firefox. Everything appeared fine in IE but when viewed from Firefox, the bulleted lists were strangely double spaced. Fixed that with a few HTML code tweaks. There was a bunch of other things that looked weird in Firefox but its all fixed now. The site should look the same in IE and Firefox.

Check out the new design and tell me what you think!!
~pcwiz
Well...no opinions I guess wink.gif

I added a few more sites:

netkas.freeflux.net
semthex.com

Please, if there are any sites that you see that are not on the wiki, CONTACT ME and give me the URLs. I want to make this engine as complete and useful as possible.

Thanks
~pcwiz
I modified the engine so that the results appear within the existing page.

I just took the search to a whole new level. Using Conduit, I created a search toolbar for IE and Firefox that allows you to search the OSx86 Search Engine from anywhere! Download and instructions:

http://pcwizcomputer.com/downloads/osx86search.htm

EDIT: This is a minor thing but I also added an OSx86 Favicon to the search engine.

WOOT! I created a search bar addon for the OSx86 Search Engine. See this thread for details:

I made another search engine to search ONLY the OSx86 Wiki and InsanelyMac. This search engine can ALSO be accessed at www.osx86search.co.nr, side by side with the older search engine I made that searches all OSx86 content. I also made a search plugin for the engine that only searches InsanelyMac and the OSx86 Wiki. You can download it at www.osx86search.co.nr, the same way you download the other search bar plugin except choose "Add OSx86 Project and InsanelyMac Search" from the search bar drop down menu.

Enjoy!

I removed the downloads and videos from the main engine and made 2 new engines that can also be accessed side by side and www.osx86search.co.nr. They search only downloads and videos. I have also made corresponding search plugins for both. I also removed some unrelated sites and stuff.

Enjoy!
~pcwiz
Well I removed the Video and Torrent search because they are useless and take too much space.

Nice work, thanks.

Welcome!

This a great tool, I wish they would built it into the site somewhere.
