I've tried three different motherboards in attempting to build this thing, and though Jas 10.4.8 installed flawlessly on my laptop, the near-supercomputer I'm attempting to build has thus far been disastrous. Mostly it's because I wanted a computer to run Final Cut Studio and I didn't have the money for an iMac. In fact, I don't know if an iMac will even run with the system requirements, but I might as well have bought one at this point.
  • • A Macintosh computer with a 1.25GHz or faster PowerPC G4, PowerPC G5, Intel Core Duo, or Intel Xeon processor.
  • • 1GB of RAM
  • • An AGP or PCI Express Quartz Extreme graphics card (Final Cut Studio is not compatible with integrated Intel graphics processors)
  • • A display with 1024-by-768 resolution or higher
  • • Mac OS X v10.4.9 or later
  • • QuickTime 7.1.6 or later
  • • A DVD drive for installation
The PCI Express thing is what gets me. Anyway, the parts I have now, sans the three nonworking motherboards:

Intel Core Duo 2.4 ghz
Athlon 64 x2 4800+
2 gigs DDR2 800 RAM
Firewire card

Am I going to have any luck here, or should I just see what I can get for the components I can't return and return the ones I can and go with an iMac? What do I need to get to make this work?

That link has a post that has solutions for problems with audio, video and other problems. This will help you when looking at possible boards.

Wiki
That is the wiki part of insanelymac. Under the hardware section there are links to drivers lists and hcls. Edit the url on the hcl page to get 10.4.9.

2 x 1 GB Ballistix at 1200 MhZ.

this machine could kick a mac pro's ass (cept for the octo ohmy.gif)

asap18 has that board. So you could ask him what seed he has.

Hope this helps.
