hey guys,

I installed 9a466 client on my Macbook a few weeks back (external drive, I had some work to do so I needed Tiger for stability!) and have just installed the Server packages to kick Leopard Servers tyres, as it were. I opened the server mkpg (now located in 'Other Installs' along with X Code, NOT in 'system' as in Tiger/Panther etc.) and it installed just fine. I rebooted, typed in the code, selected 'advanced' instead of 'standard' or 'workgroup' and away I went!

Or so I though.... Server Admin recognises it is running on a Macbook and all the rest (would post screenshots but for the ninjas. Rest assured the new Server Admin is AWESOME!), but Server Preferences (another new feature) gives a rather odd error. It authenticates, but cannot connect and asks me to try again. Any suggestions? (other than 'its not meant to run on Macbooks')

cheers

no one have any idea?

i am trying to install server on my mac pro, but it keeps giving me an error when it trys to set it up. but you installed this from the client image?

I installed the client, then the server packages from the server disc, which is the only way to run OS X Server on an 'unsupported' system (ie. a laptop)

Your error is probably due to the fact that it can't get its own DNS name. OSX Server absolutely needs a DNS server to run properly. I get this kind of issue too with tiger server and settings a local DNS server is way to complicated for me. You should look at the console log to see the explanation of the error.

you are quite right Krazubu, the problem is I cant get into the server preferences to enable a DNS Server. I probably havent spent long enough looking into this.

well, i can't install server on my mac pro unless i do the advanced setup. but i want it to setup it up for me (that's supposed to be something new in leopard server)

any ideas?

i think my problem is i only have wireless internet.

It seems my friend Krazubu was quite right, I needed a DNS set up. I have had trouble with OS X Server and its love of DNS before so I never learn lol. Anyway I started the DNS service from Server Admin and was then told that Server Preferences only works for 'standard' or 'workgroup' versions of OS X Server....

damnit!

there's no need to setup a dns, I've recieved the same error before I set up any additional service.

BTW: Leo server ROCKS!

well can you help me get mine setup then? i can get the advanced to work (kinda), but i can't get the standard to setup. (can't login or anything)

here's the thing. i only have wireless internet. i can't plug directly up to the router, and it wants an IP address to setup (i think). i tried to trick it by plugging in an ethernet cord to another router (without internet), and it seemed to trick it at first, but then it still doesn't work. (or i can't get it to)

any ideas? is there a way to change it from the advanced to standard?
