Hey, you helpful folks.
I'm currently running 10.4.7, which hasn't had but a hiccup until I got the ethernet card all happy and running (it's a marvell, just had to edit the kext)...
However
While browsing the internet (I've tried both Safari and Firefox now), the speeds are horrible. Worse than dial-up. I can download at completely normal speeds (Firefox downloaded at 500k+ a second), but just general browsing is horrible. Has anyone else had this problem, or any suggestions?
Thanks, lads.

I'm guessing it's a settings problem or could be a problem with the temp folder(the place your browser stores web pages, cookies, and content from a page).

Try going into about:config in Firefox and then filtering with "network" and then tweak some of the settings like pipelining and max requests.

The problem is in both Safari and Firefox as stated above. Both browsers share the same resources. I don't see how that would help.

i had the same problem previously as well. It turned out to be my linksys router had a bad dns address listed. You can easily check if it is your router by just bypassing it temporarily to see if that solves the problem.

I had the exact same problem. I have a D-Link DI-524 router and all my Windows machines work, but any Mac that has ever connected, real Mac or hackintosh, has had terribly slow browsing.
When I look at my resolv.conf file, it shows my only DNS server as 192.168.0.1 (the address of my router). If I manually add DNS servers, it fixes the problem. So obviously there's some DNS issue with my router.
So my fix is to manually add DNS servers in the network section of System Preferences. Is there some way to get the router to report the right DNS servers to my computer?

It could be your video card, you know. It may not be able to render the web pages quickly enough.

Try manually configuring your connection. Go to System Preferences:Network:Your Card.
Make sure you know the information to input. Internet routers default IP is usually 192.168.1.1. Try that address. If it doesn't work look in the documentation for your router.

I experience slow speeds too. However my speedtest is about 5 Mbps.
I have the feeling it has something to do with the OS itself, rather than the internet.
Anyone got a clue what could it be?

just try setting your DNS properly, check with your router
