Has anyone one tried or has Apple Rhapsody DR2.
Mareep2000
I have it on a CD somewhere, but I have never managed to get it to install sad.gif
zhLilDoggi
I have. laugh.gif

Its pretty cool when you let the GUI sit for 10 mins, the GUI dims. laugh.gif

i have rhapsody dr1 and dr2 both ppc and x86. Runs nicely on my pentium 2.
zfire89
can some one hook me up with a copy for x86, my email is zfire@insightbb.com i wanna put it on a 366mhz celeron and just mess around with it because it looks kinda interesting.

Since it has a early version of darwin on it I wonder if u can actually some how update darwin to a new version
mikesown
I tried it a long while ago. It is overrated imho. Almost no applications were made for it outside the core OS utilities, and there is no rosetta like functionality, so you pretty much can't run anything on it.

Its part of NeXT, so I've heard. So you may be able to run some NeXT programs
on it.

BSD -> NeXT -> Rhapsody -> OS X Server -> OS X

Those are the degrees of seperation...basically.
blahsucks
It's not even technically true BSD; it's the Mach kernel. It goes more like this:

BSD -> Mach -> NeXT -> OpenStep -> Rhapsody -> OSX Server -> OSX
Macintosh -------------> Copland/OS8 ----------> MacOS 9/Classic -----^

It's a little lopsided, and the timing is off, but it's close enough.
iLux
It's a little bit more complicated

BSD-->Mach-->NeXTSTEP-->OPENSTEP+NetBSD-->Raphsody DR1+BSD Lite-->Rhapsody DR2-->Mac OS X Server-->Mac OS X
stryder
Rhapsody did not use the Darwin kernel. It did not use Carbon or Cocoa for application development. It did not support kexts like the current OS X does... so what you get is what you get. When you install it, whatever is on it is whatever you can run, and whatever drivers are on it (very, VERY, few) are all you get. You think the drivers included with Darwin are sparse, Rhapsody DR2 had support for only a handful of video cards, and a few network cards. It's not even worth the download to try it out. It was cool when I got it in my mailing, 'cause I thought "hmmm, Mac on intel... ohmy.gif ", and tried it out. But that's as far as it goes, trying it out... it was really buggy for me.
RevoX
there's a website named www.openstep.se that works on bringing rhapsody to life.
sampson
the reason there was no cocoa/carbon was because they were trying out the yellowbook api functions. they're a set of apis that are platform inspecific to make compiling an app on x86 or ppc a breeze
blahsucks
I'm pretty sure NeXTStep and OpenStep implemented Cocoa (at least in an early fashion). Rhapsody was simply an upgrade on OpenStep, so I'm thinking that there was Cocoa in Rhapsody. Maybe not the same Cocoa, but a nice stepping stone for NeXT software developers.

And YellowBook = Cocoa, BTW.

It's Box. YellowBox. Unless your talking about something else. And YellowBox still runs in Windows. It's kinda nice actually.

Is there any way you could get me a copy of DR1 and DR2 for x86? I'd like to try them out and tinker with it. Thanks.

@sHard : where did you get yellowbox ?
I've been looking for it for quite a long time.

Yo... BE WARNED FELLOW DOWNLOADERS. There is a torrent out there that supposedly has the much coveted iso for Rhapsody DR2. DON'T DOWNLOAD IT! It is a fake file. thumbsdown_anim.gif Ok... now that I have made myself clear... I would like to ask if anyone has the Rhapsdy DR2 x86 CD, please copy it to an iso file. I lost my CD in a bad accident so please come to my aid poster_oops.gif !! Let me know when it is avalible so I can fetch it. Thank you!

Lol, thanks for the heads up, Guru. Welcome to the forum.

Hey you're welcome! I actually am an avid Linux user myself. However the betas for Apple products greatly interest me.

Could you send me a PM at the speed of light too? wink.gif

compress.gif It's funny how unstable rhapsody could be, but on the flip side, we have an OS X Server 1.0 (which as far as I remember is still mainly Rhapsody) machine here at work and it's been running for years without a rebuild. We were also afraid to touch it because it's been working for all these years with out a problem.

guys.... torrents and http links aren't the only ways of getting files...

tip : download emule and connect to the server on the top of the list... it has the file rhapsody_dr2_x86.iso (just search "rhapsody").

it started downloading at 1kb/s for me but it ended up going at a constant 30kb/s so if you're patient then you will have a copy in a couple of days. it is about 300mb

also there is another file on there called rhapsody install disk or something. get that too, it is needed to install rhapsody.
Sherry Haibara
I downloaded and tested it, but works right only in VMWare with my AMD64 processor.
It hangs on memory allocation, I think that 512 MBs of RAM it's a lot for Rhapsody.
Sherry Haibara
Dragon
it's not supposed to be run in emulators, and apparently the only emulator it works with is virtual pc 2005. smile.gif

try native install it
Rhapsody Guru
Guys... I actually have performed the impossible. I have gotten Rhapsody DR2 to work on the Bochs processor emulator and work well!!!!! biggrin.gif If it were not for bwhsh8r providing the Rhapsody DR2 iso, however, none of this would have been possible. The emulator is rather slow due to complete emulation of the x86 architecture verses virtualization done by say VMware. If you don't believe me, click on the following link to to see a screenshot of my success! (Note: the image is at 1280x800 resolution so you may need to do some scrolling around.)

Bochs with Rhapsody in action on my Windows XP desktop!

By the way, setting this up was no easy task. In fact, it took a really long time to get it just right, but I finally got it to work. That's no suprise though, since I am the almighty Rhapsody Guru! So as to get you all the same taste of the OS that I got, I am going to make you all a pdf guide showing you how to set Rhapsody up within Bochs successfully. I'll make it as easy as I can and I might set up a PayPal account later on for donations 2centsfinal.gif so as to help me with making more quality guides pretaining to any computer solution you need for a problem you have. Stay tuned for the arrival of my guide!

I run it perfectly in an early version of virtual pc, just give 128 Mb of ram and it won't hang on memory allocation...

P.s.: I'm italian, too wink.gif

Yo.. I have posted my guide on this forum. Just search for it under "Rhapsody Install Guide" wink.gif

I am so excited to see a topic related to rhapsody that is current!!!!

I've been searching the internet trying to find a copy.
I can't get emule to work because of my network situation.

If anyone knows where to find Rhapsody v1.0 (a.k.a. v5.2) that'll be cool. This came after Rhapsody DR2, but before MacOS X Server 1.0 which only supports the PowerPC architecture. I heard of Apple releasing it for a VERY short time, not really enough to make it sell at all since Apple changed their focus to MacOS X.

Hmm... interesting. But there is no way to DISPROVE its existance, though. That's why bwhsh8r is looking around anyways. I wish OSBetaArchives was still around.

They didn't have it. And they knew it didn't exist in a leaked format. If you knew me, you'd know I'd know. Hrm...that's a weird sentence.

"And if you can get a copy of Rhapsody 5.2, which wasn't supposed to be let off the Apple campus, consider yourself one of the few people to actually see that OS (though it really is just Mac OS X Server 1.0 without the Server apps installed, so it shouldn't look that different once installed)."

and this 5.2 release does not depend on sse2?

this might be good news for people (like me) who have non sse2 laptops they want to try it on....

seeing as the other versions of rhapsody don't require sse2, aqua would be nice for a change smile.gif

Aqua didn't exist until 10.0. Server and Rhapsody didn't have it.
Rhapsody Guru
Lets just think about this... I'll be hypothetical for one moment here. If I were to nab a copy of Rhapsody 5.2... note that this was a release version with absolutely no software-imposed physical memory restrictions like in Rhapsody DR2 which only allowed 192MB of RAM. It would also be more stable than its predecessor. And I would be the most lucky kid on the block.

Yup. Let's just relax now. I am guessing we will never find Rhapsody 5.2 in the wild.
