I love the history of Macs and stuff, so I'm very interested in getting a copy of Rhapsody. Could the superhero person thingy shoot me a PM at the speed of light please? Also, what about DP3 and DP4? DP3 had Aqua, and DP4 was a bit better. I wonder if we can get those! And also, I still believe that no version of OSX was usable for day-to-day until Mac OS X 10.2, although I prefer 10.3. (And I have 10.5 biggrin.gif)
Suzuka
Id like to try this too, could anyone get it for me? and is it intel imac compatible?
niteice
Rhapsody is extremely picky about hardware. It's best to run it in an emulator or on a Pentium I box. Anything from around 1998 should do.

I managed to install RDR2 in Parallels Desktop, so it's not just for VMWare, VPC, and Bochs. smile.gif
bwhsh8r
glad to hear that you were able to get it

I have only one problem: No colour display. sad.gif
bwhsh8r
sherry haibara had the same problem... idk, must be common...?

max
Patrix
Dax,

Can you explain how you got DR2 running inside Parallels (and what version of Parallels are you using?)? I've tried multiple times with different Rhapsody drivers, and it never manages to mount the ISO image of Rhapsody - I get the same thing when trying OPENSTEP 4.2..

thanks,
Patrix.

oh and btw, I've seen many blogs/screenshots out there of openstep (and rhapsody? can't remember) running in Parallels with color, so I'm pretty sure it's possible somehow.
Rhapsody Guru
Why use Parallels when you can use a free Virtual x86 emulator like Bochs? Btw... I fixed the sticky mouse problem and the color display goes much faster.

Well, there is apparently some patchset you can use to install colour. Any ideas guys?

did u use the driver floopy (probly a stupid question, but worth a try?)

max
Korrupted
Yeah, but I don't think that's the patch set you need for it.

Perhaps a Rhapsody Project patch. But they are gone.
Korrupted
So there's no chance of having colour in parallels then? Blah.
AriX
hey, when are those pm's at the speed of light with links to rhapsody coming?
bwhsh8r
lol, sorry for the wait, i forget theyres a "mac betas and classics" thread and that i am decently needed in... sorry bout that, i just noticed today and everythings sorted out smile.gif and matt, read the yellow box thread smile.gif

max

oh, and ps, if you cant get hold of me get the link from rhapsody guru, sorry, but ive been kinda buisy, thanks again matt smile.gif
Patrix
ah I sloved my installation issues inside Parallels - I needed the updated (build 1884), which I hadn't noticed was there...
Korrupted
Did you happen to get colour by chance?

Not yet.. I got past the install, and the installation of extra stuff, now I reboot and Rhapsody starts up, then all I see is a gray screen. No mouse cursor, nothing happening, no HD activity etc.
Rhapsody Guru
Huh... interesting.

I got mine to work by following Rhapsody Guru's guide to Bochs, except skipping the bochs only part. smile.gif

So basically, you didn't use Bochs am I right?
Korrupted
Yeah, I have it running in Parallels.
Patrix
Ok I'm gonna redownload the Bochs guide and follow it closely then - or rather, actually read it wink.gif I'll report back when I have it running (optimism at work here!)
Patrix
Tada! There you go.. My problem was the selection of the video driver, Rhapsody Guru's suggestion in the Bochs guide works (no color.. yet).

Also disabling VT-X in the vmflags section helps to even start the install, after loading the drivers from the floppy image.
Korrupted
Disabling or Enabling VT-X doesn't seem to make any difference to me.
Patrix
Oh well. No color, no networking.. Not as fun to run it as it would be if I had some net access and larger resolutions. Did you get networking, Dax?
Korrupted
I didn't try. Let me look in Parallels Windows to see what kind of network card it has.

EDIT: It appears to have a generic Parallels adapter, yet the other side says a Realtek RTL8039...
Rhapsody Guru
Son't you think Parallels should emulate a NE2k network adapter? That is the MOST universially supported network adapter to date. Rhapsody supports NE2k.

It's funny how unstable rhapsody could be...
-and-

QUOTE('Rhapsody Guru')
...note that this was a release version with absolutely no software-imposed physical memory restrictions like in Rhapsody DR2 which only allowed 192MB of RAM. It would also be more stable than its predecessor.

What stability problems are you guys having?

I've been using Rhapsody on my IBM ThinkPad since 2000 and I've only had it crash twice in that time (both times in Create, both times it was a Postscript error that kicked me out to the login screen).

The whole reason I continued to use Rhapsody long after other versions of Mac OS X had come out was it's stability. Part of my job is servicing people's systems, and when your system crashes in front of a client that doesn't instill a lot of confidence in your abilities to fix their system.

And not once did I have Rhapsody crash on me while with a client.

So what exactly are you guys talking about? I noticed that neither of the people I quoted posted in the "do you actually use Rhapsody?" thread, so I'm not even sure that they are really using Rhapsody... but I would like to find out about these stability issues (and if we are talking about system problems or application issues).

What I hate to see is Rhapsody getting a bad reputation as being unstable when infact it is rock solid when run on the real hardware it was designed to run on. Every system I've bought to run Rhapsody was bought because I knew that it would run Rhapsody. I've been offered very inexpensive (and very fast) PCs which I turned down because I knew that they could not run Rhapsody (or OPENSTEP for that matter). As those are the only two PC operating systems I use, any PC hardware that couldn't run those operating systems would be little more than a big paperweight for me.

thats cool that you use those very uncommon oss, i have to admit that ive never used rhapsody... smile.gif but thats old news, i can vouch for rhapsody guru (matt) in saying that hes used it (in bochs)... but other than that idk, and most people i have heard that are using it are using it in bochs or other virtual system... but idk about truely compatable hardware.

max
Rhapsody Guru
By the way... when I said "a little unstable"... I mean't on Bochs and NOT on a real computer. On a real computer, Rhapsody seems to run flawlessly with the proper configuration, of course.

You know, there are real CDs and a Virtual PC 4 VHD file floating around. I think the little birdies at OSBA gave it to the world. Just pointing that out.

Umm... So I wasn't supposed to post that?
Rhapsody Guru
OSBA stands for the now defunct OS Beta Archives. It was a place to get pretty much any old OS. It died recently due to some idiot 12 year old flamers.

WOW! This is amazing! Who ever knew that anybody would have interest in this rather obscure OS which is based on my favorite OS, NeXTstep!

By the way, my name is Joe and I am happy to join the forums.
