Current Status- 8800GTS/GTX Supported on 10.4.10+. ALL Geforce 8x00 supported on 10.5.1+
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LAST UPDATED- 4/28/2008
Unfortunately I no longer own a G80 myself and I do not have the time to keep up on such a large thread to keep this post updated. Mac.nub has made an installer for 8800 cards under 10.4.x and created an excellent guide which is updated more often.
Check it out.

New MBPs have different build of 10.4.9, build 8Q1058. I guess it includes updated NV kexts, you have to grab those from new MBPs.
Dr. Hurt
just wait for 10.4.10
It will probably have Nvidia kexts, new jmicron ide support, and new ethernet drivers for intel965. This is excellent news for all 965 users.
It could also include gma x3000 drivers which will probably be used in future versions of macbook and imac.

From where you got this inf?
Kiko
the apple store biggrin.gif

/me runs there with a memory stick
OMX-Knuckles
Kiko- PM me the moment you get those kexts! biggrin.gif I'll have my hackintosh laptop and desktop at the ready!
DangerMouse76
Have a 8800 GTX here ready and waiting to test wink.gif
DeadXDawn
Yea same here... I have 2 8800gtx's SLI any way we can get those working together.. I won't keep my fingers crossed but hey, they work like a dream in XP... I would like to get one of them working with OSx though. Please post any news.

some good news re: drivers in 10.4.10 for you guys smile.gif
SteveNZ
Fantastic. This has all turned up just in time for my new project. If anyone needs a guinnea-pig, let me know wink.gif I'll have a 7900GT and 8600GTS at my disposal as well as an assortment of HDDs and optical drives. I'm building a reasonably high-spec system (2.4ghz coreduo, 4gb ram etc.) with the sole intent of running OSx86 on it (and I've got a Mac mini I'm tryping this from so I've got a legit 10.4.3 install disk to work from just for the sake of semi-legitimacy although I doubt the license has provision multi-installs).

Thanks in advance guys, the interweb is a beautiful thing smile.gif
EtherealRemnant
Got an 8800GTS here that's DYIN to get some OS X goodness!
DiaboliK
you also have to remember the 512mb darwin barrier, gotta keep that in mind wink.gif
EtherealRemnant
Ehhh... that may or may not matter. Only time will tell.
SteveNZ
Just in case I've got a 256Mb card smile.gif It's pretty insane that a single PCIe vidcard can now come with 768Mb. (I haven't seen any 1Gb ones but it wouldn't surprise me). IIRC the natit drivers enable 512Mb recognition, anything beyond that is really pretty silly if you want to use it with OSX what with the minimal 3D support (Leopard corevideo may may use of it I guess).

Nah, the quadro 5600 have a even larger memory, they are at 1,5GB smile.gif

I'm thinking about an update of my VGA in autumn and a GeForce 8800 GTS would be perfect tongue.gif
OMX-Knuckles
Okay, so here's our objectives at this point-
- Get ahold of these kexts. There's a couple ways to do this, the first is to pull them off of a new MBP. The second is to wait for 10.4.10 shows up soon (rumor mill says next week), or pray for at least a partial leak. Keep looking in the usual places.

-Compile a list of device ID's for Geforce 8 cards and examine other Darwin/Linux G80 drivers for differences between the 85/8600 and 8800 drivers (they should be the same but the more I look at the 8600's the more unclear the architecture changes are)

-Rock and roll! biggrin.gif
DangerMouse76
Was at the shop here this morning, unfortunately no new MBPs (no official Apple Stores in Switzerland yet sad.gif ). Maybe someone else will have more luck or knows someone who already has one?
TheRuggedLion
Man, and I here I was getting jealous of my girlfriend saying she was gonna get the "new" iMac that should be coming out within the next few weeks. I would love to run this on my core2duo and a 8800gtx. Typing this on the updated REGULAR MacBook, not pro, anything I can do to help?

(I'm quite a n00b to Mac OS, so don't flame!)
OMX-Knuckles
Best way to help right now would be to get ahold of those kexts. Also it would be helpful to start collecting device ID's for Geforce 8's and examining the G80 drivers for any differences between the 8600 and 8800 drivers. I'll collect the ID's from my 8800 this evening and get a list started.

Thanks! The vendor ID should be 0x10de.

It would be very nice if someone could post the kext files, cant wait until 10.4.10 is released.
On the macrumors forum someone postet a review from a new powerbook, so they must be available !
I am ready to test it with a Geforce 8800 GTS 320 MB.
Sinc my old card, a ATI X1950 is gone (sold that card, because of the bad linux support) the osx does not make any fun

By the way, you would like to have a Device ID list:

from Nvidia: http://developer.nvidia.com/object/device_ids.html

0x0191, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX
0x0193, "NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS
0x0400, "NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS

0x0421, "NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT
0x0422, "NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS
0x0423, "NVIDIA GeForce 8300 GS

cheers

Hey, aqua-mac was faster ! Sorry !
did not see your post before, smoking break !!

cheers

I suspect that the 320 & 760 memory amounts may give us problems just as 512 cards did to start with. I have a 8800 GTX for testing but also a 8600 GT 256 which will prove if the drivers are working first. Then I will experiment on the GTX. We just need that update!
scotch12
Hey aqua-mac,
i was shortly looking your hackintosh in a G5 case, nice work !
Looks great, respect !

And yea, youre right, the 8800 gts, gtx, ultra will give us something to do, but im shure someone will figured out.

Thanks Scotch12,

Looking forward to getting the G80 cards going at last.
bballs91
Hey this is a great idea, hopefully we can get something together.

I have an 8800GTS 640mb to experiment with.
Khid
Guess what video card is going back to newEgg!!!

Bye Bye X1950XT. I'd rather wait and spend the 200+ on an 8800 and use 7900GS til then.

We likes it!

Come on with those updates! Anyone got it working yet?
Kiko
hopefully my apple store has the laptops, so when i drop my ipod off for service, i'll get the kexts (if they have the laptops tongue.gif )
EtherealRemnant
I wonder if the 8xxx driver will support 8800 cards out of the box...

Something tells me it would have to. I mean, people are getting rather annoyed at their limited selection of nVidia cards in Mac Pros...

I would have bought a Mac Pro if it ran an 8800GTX...
Ezhoon
I am just anxiously waiting for these kexts to be leaked. rolleyes.gif

8800GTS 320MB version is just awesome; it overclocks very well and, surprisingly,
the fan noise is rather on the quiet side when running in non-overclocked mode.
TheRuggedLion
Nothing yet I see... Getting hard to look at Windows knowing that it might be possible for 8800 users to have OS X. I'm trying to be patient :-)
Khid
You and I both, dude. I want to upgrade to an 8800GTS 320mb ASAP!
bballs91
Anybody got a hold of the kexts yet?

I would wait until we see what the memory limitations are. I have the 320 meg card. I am hoping it works. I bet the 640 and 768 cards wont work.
Khid
I'm only gonna get the 320. Well, maybe if the 640 works.

Damn the guy that said he would send them to me logged off.. Im hitting up more places now

I grabbed IOPCIFamily.kext as I know older versions have issues with 512M cards+ and am hoping this has the bug fixed. I assume most people will just want to copy IOPCIFamily, NVDAResman, NVDANV50Hal, GeForce and GeForce8xxxGLDriver.bundle across.

And the money shot...

Hopefully we hear some success stories.

Great job, testing in a sec

Don't forgot to check the PCI ID's in the info.plist for NVDAResMan and NVDANV50Hal.

I'm seeing in NVDANV50Hal a reference to the ID 0x019010de which is a G80 model (not listed in the PCI ID database) but the 0191+ is what most cards will have.

NVDAResMan does not look like it needs to be modified but hard to tell at this time.

I haven't used this word since the early 90s, but bummer man. I hope the gtx cards will run...

If anything I think these drivers are generic. They don't seem to be specific to the cards in the MBP. I would expect just as much functionality out of these new drivers as existing 6 and 7 series owner have. I does not look too difficult to get them going and if I had a 8800 card i'd be trying them out myself. Im 95% sure that all 8 series cards are going to work and if they don't they probably just need the BIOS of the card flashed to get around the memory issue.
DiaboliK
time to get crackin away at these : lets see who can make em all work first tongue.gif

oh yea one more thing : you might have wanted to grab the frameworks for opengl and all the other required frameworks, just a thought wink.gif

I was thinking about that but I was trying to do this with a bit of stealth smile.gif I figured since its still 10.4.9 the frameworks will probably be the same and all they did was add the extensions. I also thought about grabbing the kernel but I figured this was a good enough start. If we need more its not like its going to be difficult to get other files.
Kiko
