I'm planing to buy a notebook: 15.4", Core 2 Duo T7100 2x 1.8 Ghz, 1024MB DDR2, 160 Gig SATA, 512MB NVIDIA Geforce 8600GO
And I know that the GF 8600 isnt supported by OS X 10.4 yet, I know that just res switching will work, so my question is, can I work with the Intel graphic chip on the motherboard, without removing my graphic card, so that i can use the intel gpu with osx and the geforce graphic card with xp?
And how long is it gonna take that there is QE/CI support for that graphic card?
The notebook costs 900€/ 1200$ and i need one for my school exchange year to the USA
So i hope u can answer my questions asap. thx in advance

Doubt it's gonna work. I'm sorry, check the wiki. So far you can use ( I think) the Geforce go 6600, 6800, 7400 and 7600, and ATI X1600 in laptops. But definitely not the 8600, except in maybe in VESA mode (no acceleration)

Yeah, basically unplug the vga/dvi cable from your graphics card and plug it into your onboard, if the bios is set up correctly, it should auto detect VGA/On Board, if not look at the settings in the bios, or just unplug the graphics card if you have to.

so i have to open the notebook right? is there maybe another solution to temporarly disable the geforce graphic card and use the integratet intel graphic chip? because i will switch between OS X and XP frequently, and if i always need to open my notebook in order to start OSX with QE/CL enabled it wouldnt make sense to start OS X and this would be very sad...

Pedschgo, the laptop would not include the Intel Integrated if is has a 8600 GO. Thus no way you can use Intel for OSX and 8600 for XP.

are u sure? i thought the intel integrated graphic is onboard regardless of the "real" grapic card. here is the notebook, pls have a look and tell me if im right

AFAIK the geforce 8600 is VESA 3 compatible with OSX, so i cannot enable QE/CI yet, but for easy work in osx it's enough. when i want to play i will boot xp and for the rest i will use OSX.

btw what do u say about the cost/performance ratio?

I wouldn't recommend using that with Mac OS X. Not having CI/QE will be a huge performance hit.
EDIT- *some* notebooks have both a GMA950 and some sort of discreet graphics (I've seen GF7400's a lot) to save battery life but I don't think this one has that feature. The website would mention it if it did.

so it has both, the geforce 8600M-GT and the Intel 965PM, right?
can i use this notebook in xp with the 8600 and in osx with the intel 985pm, without opening the laptop?

ok, heres a tip to understanding intels naming system.

965PM for example:
You have the 965 chipset..
P means it does NOT include integrated graphics, G = intel graphics
and M means mobile.
The manufacturer will never include both, a discrete or integrated is how it will always be.

Hi. Was browsing this topic and found interested claim about GF6800 (as this card works). I have GS6800GS (Leadtek) running on nForce4 SLI MB from Gigabyte, AMD Dual Core 3800. I tried everything that I could find in this forum - nothing changes resolution of my display from 1024x768. Darwin recongnises my video card upon loading as VESA 3.0 (NVIDIA). I tried to load macvidia drivers (1.7.x, 1.8.1) - the outcome - computer hangs during booting. All to do to fix it - reinstall osX10.4.8(Jas release for AMD/Intel). Tried also bootin options "Graphics Mode"="my resolutionXcolor@rate" and tried to change com.apple.boot.plist file with these options - nothing helps.
The question is: can I do anything else?

If not - what could be the best motherboard for Intel Core Duo and what videocard to run this osX 10.4.8?

My advice, check the wiki. If you mean desktop, mostly any motherboards with Intel chipsets, 915,945,965,975. For Core 2 Duo, that means either 945 or 975. 965 offers potentially better bang for buck, and you CAN get it to work 100%, like the Gigabyte 965p-ds3, (check the threads on that). But for easiest install, go for one based on 945 or 975. They work so well! So far I am doing fine on my 7600gs on a 945gtp intel board. Many other nVidia cards work, basically anything with less than 512mb VRam, and newer than the Fx5200.
