what i'm using of hardware doesnt really matter. the ethernet controller and wireless doesnt work and arent supported (i have a acer ferrari 3200)

so my question is this: i'm looking to buy a pcmcia card for use of wireless lan. does anyone have any experience with this? needless to say the card has to be compatible with os x (10.4.3) x86 edition

i would mind buying an extra card for my laptop to get mac osx fully running and i bet there're a lot of guys here who share that thought.

I've been looking at a post about wlan usb, but do you know any that "supports" the utility app too?

But... Belkin cards and similar chipsets (click here for list) doesn't seem to work in the utility (mac os wireless utility for viewing accesspoints etc.).
Well, of course I could say live with it, at least the wireless net works, but unfortunately I can't, since the two main locations where I use internet (at home and at the university) uses WEP password, so I need the utility to work in order to set keys etc. (as read in the earlier mentioned post)

If that's not possible, is there then a usb LAN (regular with cable) solution that will work?

I have a Dlink DWL-G122 USB adapter that uses Ralink chipset. But it doesn't work under 10.4.3 (I guess many others have the same problem) though it worked under 10.4.1. Could you tell me what do you mean by "at least wireless net works"? Thanks!

sorry, maybe i was too quick with the facts there, but as far as i know wireless (open) networking works fine, but since the utility doesn't work with the card, then you can't use WEP networks (to set up keys and such)

and yes, i'm using 10.4.3 so it will have to be working on 10.4.x

10.4.3 is VERY picky about wireless cards. Check the broadcom thread, there are like 2 chipsets that will work in 10.4.3, but even for those you have to do some command line funstuff to get them to work (in the drivers subforum here there is a thread). There is tolerable support for PCI cards though.

Well, i had an old Acton PCI Ethernet card hanging around, threw that in, it displays as Intel Fast Ethernet on bootup ( has a boot-rom chip), and is installed as a Realtek in OSX

Working perfectly now,
neither of my 2 inbuilt gigabit ethernets worked before that lol. ( broadcom netxtreme PCIe & Marvell Yukon 88E8001 )

Yeah, I meant to talk about wireless in 10.4.3. It seems to have slightly improved PCI card support for ethernet.

Rats... All I need is a (usb) wireless lan that works in 10.4.3 with WEP - if it's a bit advanced to install it with terminal stuff etc. i don't care, as long as it's possible to get it to work

Just wanted to let you know how my wireless turned out.

The Belkin isn't available in my country, so I ordered the D-Link DWL-G122 USB instead.
It arrived today and I downloaded the 2005/11/29 driver from ralink, installed it, restarted and plugged in my wireless adapter, then wireless utility pops up and scans, finds my network and connects without any problems whatsoever
