Full Version: Does it make sense to buy an ATIand sell my geForce now?

Hi,

well I thought about selling my nVidia and get me an Ati for several reasons sad.gif

- I did not find any information about the current status of the macvidia project
- I did not even found a guess, how long it will probably take
- I dont know, if it is just quiet or dead!?
- No one knows anything about future OSX drivers in upcoming releases

Atm, I have a geForce 6600 GT with PCI-E.

Can you recomment an equivalent ATI that is working for you?
Or do you think it may be ok to just do nothing and wait a month?

I am not a hardcore gamer. I just need a card that works with dual monitor and fit into the pci-e slot smile.gif

come on,

hold your breath for a few seconds and hear me out.
Why the crap would you based on an os in beta with far from finished driversupport which shouldn't run on your machine anyway (non Apple intel hw) decide to dump a perfectly good videocard to get one of which you don't know how it wil work with the finished product that is again not supposed to work on your machine anyway.
I'd hold on a bit and see how osxi matures and more important the driver support and beyond that if it remains so easy to hack into working on non Apple intel hw and then dicide to dump your videocard or not:)

may the force be with you dude;)

does with intel chipset's work dualmonitoring?
with this new 8f1099 my ati card work very well but no multimonitoring.
Intresting that with my geforceFX5200 i have mirrored screens(no acceleration), but I can't to set anything in System Profiler....

I'll Wait.

Even the newest G5 come with NVidia PCI-E cards.

Hi,

thanks for your suggetions and comments, I think I'll join you then and
just wait, too smile.gif

Maybe it would be good, to have a diffuse date at the macvidia page,
just for the feeling smile.gif I am very thankful and appreciate their hard
freetime work very much, but sometimes it is hard to just have a
blackbox with no information about 'when'. smile.gif

@bozotheclown:

I agree, and I am also happy with my system, i never would have
expected it to work like it does now. But you know, this is the only thing
missing and to say goodbye to windows smile.gif This is even harder, when I
imagine the lucky Ati owners now with CI and QE. (Something in me
screams: mee too! I wanna!! here!) laugh.gif

I, maybe, will buy a X300 (the cheapest) of the ATI cards, just to see if it worth, and sell it then. tongue.gif
Tak
Yeah for the moment if you want to play with QE and CI with one monitor then pick up a cheap used compatible card like the X300 for PCI-E or 9600 for AGP.
cyrana
Get the cheapest thing that works and wait for final. smile.gif

Is Core Image supported on Radeon x300? I thought that x300 is just R9200 with PCI Express bus, and R9200 does not support Core Image as far as I know.
FancyNatra
everything sound's great, but this dualmonitor problem is for me, like i have just one eye... smile.gif

Good question. Agree with idea of minimizing investment in an ersatz "DTK" machine. Will be nice if the first Apple Intel machines are released in Jan 06...should give a pretty good idea of just what the protections will be in shipping machines.

Has anyone tried this card: <http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDetail.do?oid=131928&cm_keycode=85>.
VisionTek X300 128mb on sale for $100, with a $50 rebate ($50 net price) ???

Hmm as I can see from guilliamos link DirectX 9 is supported on Radeon X300, so CI should work on this cards... Thats definetely good newz.

Is X300 supported by latest OS 10.4.3 builds?
xtraa
Very good idea with the x300 biggrin.gif

I think I will buy one, too, as soon as we know, that it i supported 100%

I wouldn't totally change your way of life for this yet. If in a year you can't get your card working, then change it. Most likely you will be able to.

I was going to get a $80 wireless Linksys thing that will allow me to use my ethernet port which works with my computer. Although it would be nice to get working internet, I don't have sound, graphics.. etc. I am not going to be spending $80 for something that won't have a point on getting it in a couple months.

I am sure people will get almost all hardware working.. just now people have ATI being detected! Thats a big step.. and Apple only released the Intel processer supported version only at the beginning of this year (I think). If you ask me, I think we have made great progress.

Just wait. smile.gif
REVENGE
free x300se from cc ar starting 11/27. check HERE
xtraa
Ok .. I did it smile.gif

I paid 43 Euro (±50$)

CI and QE is supported out of the err... 'box' biggrin.gif and the eyecandy efx are nice to have,
but you can also live without it. There are two versions of that card, so it is a good idea
to check if you get the one with the two outs (dvi+vga) and tv-out, in case you want to
buy one. Dual-Monitor does not work yet.

Speed: it's smooth, but i think it sucks compared to my gf6600 if it would be
accelerated. My benchmarks grew from 61 (geforce) to 72 (ati) so you can see, that
the geforce would be the killer here, it is nearly as fast as the ati but without CI and
QE. Ok, I think we did not expected anything else between a card that costs 50 and
another one that costs 150.

Bugs: i think it is the mouse shadow that makes these dirty fragments when scrolling.
But everything else is working fine.

I will use it a while and maybe give it back within the next two weeks, or sell it later
at ebay. If I manage to figure out the dual-moni support, I will keep it, but I don't
think that I will find a way. smile.gif
