i know this may be a dumb question but i have a macbook pro and i would like to hook up a bass and a guitar and maybe a piano up to my laptop so i could record them and just play around with logic express and see what happens. what would i need to hook those things up to my macbook pro?

Jk, I'd suggest you get a Line 6 POD, any version. you can go Directly from the output into you into your macbook and get a great sound. You may need some cords you can obtain from Radioshack. That's the cheap route.

i was looking at guitar center and i found this little thing that is the cheapest and will give the most bang for my buck. for equipment some guitars, bass, a piano and the amps that go along with it

You should check out the M-Audio Fire wire models, you'll get a better sound. I've only heard bad things about USB connections
