Hi

I have problem with dual boot. I have 160GB disk and 3 partition.

fisical structure:

1 - NTFS - c: WinXP
2 - AF - MacOS
3 - EXT - WinXP
4 - LOG - d: WinXP

but in MBR i have:
1 - NTFS - Active
2 - EXT
3 - AF
4 -

I have chain0 file on C:\ and i edit boot.ini

But if I want to boot I have error "chain booting error"

I normally can't boot to Mac OS. If I change active partition to AF and use Install DVD and wait 8sek with no keypressing the Mac OS boot from hard drive.

I think that chain0 can't find partiton AF if isn't active.
Is any bootloader that change active partition to AF and boot from file chain0, but when I want use WinXP they can boot it ?

Maybe I'm wrong but trick with DVD is very interesting

Your osx partition doesn't have to be active if you use the ntldr to chainload chain0.

Seems the partitioning tool you used didn't reorder the partition table when you created your primary AF partition: even though it is physically before the extended, it is after in the list. That's a possible source of the problem. Usually good tools do take care to reflect physical order in the table order.

I have no simple solution to this.

Perhaps a fixmbr from the winxp install cd could help, but I'm not sure.

but why i can boot with install dvd ? what that dvd do ?

if I make on linux "dd=/dev/hda3 of=boot_file bs=512 count=1" the boot_file is filled by zeros. Maybe there is a problem ? maybe i don't have boot_sector on osx partition ?
Can You dd this file for me ?

What happens when you make osx (0xAF) partition active and try to boot without the install DVD?
(btw, the root of the dvd has the chain0 file)

Then my Windows boot loader in MBR say that can't load operating system :/. Only DVD boot osx

What bootloader are you using?

Also, Can you boot into Linux? If so, what are the partitions that it reports and in what order are they?

I'm having the same problem. I'm using vista and the vista bootloader. I have chain0 in C:\ and when I restart and select Mac OS X it just says 'Chain Booting Error'. I change partition 2 to boot. It says 'No Operating System'. I put iATKOS v2.0 disk in let it time out it boots wonderfully. Any help?

I AM HAVING THIS ISSUE AS WELL. DO ANY PROFESSIONALS HAVE AN ANSWER TO THIS PROBLEM?

I'm trying to dual boot Vista and OS X, which I installed with the iAtkos 2.0i disk, but I can't get into Mac OS X at all. I've tried using the bcdedit commandline tool to add it but I get the "Chain booting error" message when I try to boot to it. When I try booting directly to OS X by making the partition active I just get a black screen with a blinking underscore character. There's no CPU/Disk activity so I know it's not doing anything. I also tried adding the OS X entry using EasyBCD which still didn't work

I have exactly the same problem, but so far no replies from anyone on the planet.

I have managed to progress to Chain booting error - It's taken 4 days to get this far.

It took a day to get the image and burn a working DVD with the correct checksum

I have read many tutorials but none of them work with 10.5.4.
I tried one tutorial that said leave a Vista partition of at least 5Gb as Unallocated - Didn't work
I tried formatting as Fat32 and got the DVD to boot and install the OS which then - Didn't work - lol
Used Terminal to run darwin boot - Didnt work (got Device busy or something)
Tried unmounting the disk and then running darwin boot - Didn't work
Have copied chain0 to c:\ and run bcdedit - Menu pops up but -Didn't work (MBR Error 3, MBR Error 1 Press...)

Now I get Chain booting error and nobody knows anything....

Anyone ????

I have the same problem. I know there's something you need to do after putting the chain0 file into the root of the Windows HD, I have been looking for what i need to do but i can't find anything, can anyone help?

im getting the chain booting error too. it seems most of you have your partitions on the same drive, but ive got osx on an ata and vista x64 on a sata

its been working perfectly for nearly a year now but i left it running for a week and when i came back i got a restart message and now it fails to boot

ive been using the vista bootloader but i cant even boot directly to the osx drive, so i dont think it can be the mbr in my case

gonna try to do a repair from the install disk, if that doesnt work ill try a reinstall. ive reinstalled before without losing any data so im feeling kinda safe about it...

will post if i get this working tonight

id hate to fix it by reinstalling though because ive done this setup for a few other people and it would be nice to be able to tell them whats wrong if/when this happens to them

well ive been putting it off for a few days and i came home tonight (rather, this morning) with the intention of actually doing something about it, just to find that the problem has fixed itself...

hope you guys have had similar luck

the only change is that i accidently let macdrive expire in vista, but ive been using the timeout patch for weeks with no problems so i doubt thats it. so uhm... magic?

the same magic i mentioned before must have decided it had been too nice to me, because life attacked me from all fronts, which includes the reintroduction of the chain booting error

so after a quick think i decided that it wasnt my installation since it worked for one night, and it wouldnt boot on its own so it wasnt the vista boot manager. there was only one more thing i could think of that could stop my regular boot process. my gaze quickly turned to the mbr. something must have happened with it because i used a fresh kalyway dvd -s'd that sucka, and it was back to normal

i remembered from first installing that 'fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0 -> flag 1 -> quit' set the partion to active, and 'quit' rewrote the mbr and exited fdisk, so i just did that and everything is fine now, hopefully not randomly this time

so im wondering if those of you who got this from the get-go forgot to check mbr in the little disk utility on the installation drive???
