Im not sure if this has been documented here before, but I found this pretty cool tip on macosxhints.com. If you set your login preferences to user name / password, then type
">console" as the user name, with no password then login. It will dump you to a fully working text login prompt

. You can login and work in full user text mode. To get back to Aqua, simply type
"exit". I hope this helps anyone that needs to work in full text mode.
If someone could figure out how to automatically log in like that would be cool

I know there is single user mode, but for some reason it has trouble completing it when I load /etc/rc script.
