In the last few days I repeatedly hear the 'poof' sound that occurs when you drag an icon off the dock. This happens when i'm doing nothing at all such as browsing the web or reading e-mail. Have even restarted the computer and this problem (there it happened again!) will no go away.
i am running official os x 10.4.9 with all patches. Anyone experienced anything like this?

You sure it's not just iChat? When someone signs off, it makes the same/a similar sound.

No, same thing happens to me on ALL my Macs.
It is the "Alert Sound".
Tried changing it from Funk to Blow, and it still happens while I am in the other room and I know there is nothing running.

I find this happens when I have a password window pop up when coming back from sleep mode. Sounds like just a default popup sound.
