Sorry for bumping such an old topic, but I found out that I can get by if I can get the Disk Tools 1 floppy that came on the Mac OS 8.1 install CD. Can anyone send me that in a format that I can unpack on my mac?

if you want i can send you both the rescue floppy on 8.1 cd and the one on 8.0…
well, i should have also the one on 8.5 one (the 8.6 doesn't have that floppy image on it)…

The 8.0 installer came with disktools? that would be exelent! Please, do send them to me, but if you cant send those, go ahead and give me 8.1. FYI, 8.5 is not 68k compatable and therefore has no use to me.

i don't remember exacly how it is called, but i'm sure that on 8.0, 8.1 and 8.5 cds there is at least a sort of "rescue floppy" with the latest system on it. i used it (my powerbook 1400 has a broken cd drive…) and it looks a little strnage: it has things like hfs+ support (on 8.1 and 8.5, obviously…) but a system 7-like interface, which is smaller and faster than the platinum look.
i will send you the 8.1 or 8.0 disk tomorrow, now here are 2:20 am…

Mac OS 7.5.3r2 is the last Mac OS beeing shipped on floppies. Images used to lay on apple's FTP. The Powerbook 520c (68LC040@25/50MHz) will run fine with this version.
7.6.1 is nice too, was shipped on CD only (about 260MB in size as far as I remember). 8.0 or 8.1 may not be suited for your machine unless it has a comfortable RAM upgrade (max 40MB AFAIK).
If you want to install 7.6 or 8.*, you'll have to boot from an external SCSI drive using the HDI30 -> DB25 adapter, wich may be hard to find nowadays. I lost mine a few years ago

You can download Apple legacy OSes up to 7.5.2 from here:

there aren't mac os 8.x install floppies.
but you can boot from a rescue floppy and start the installation from an installation cd on the network or on an hd or external cd reader.
