Whats the best software to use to make an image of the OSX partition in case I screw something up? Since everything is working now, I don't want to take any chances and redo what I did.
For windows, I have Acronis True Image. Will this work for OSX partitions?
Arconis True image will work great. If you also get the Arconis Disk editor/director and create a bootable resque cd you'll be able to backup and restore OSX, Vista, Windows XP, Linux, BeOS without a problem. From USB2.0 external harddisks as from internal harddisks as from Firewire harddisks as from ATA optical drives. At least that is my personal experience with Asus P4P800Deluxe based desktop system and Acer Travelmate 290LMi laptop.
The bootable resque cd will not work on a real intel Mac though. Although it is possible to use the software when running XP or Vista on a real Mac and backup either partition!
I still have no nice way of getting a bootable G4 compatible system/restore disk for my PPC Mac.

I have Acronis Disk Director Suite. I see the option to create a bootable disc, but where do I create a backup image? Do I need to install Acronis True Image to do this?
How can I make an image of just what the disk space that is used? I have a 50GB partition for the OSX install, but only part of it is used by OSX.

You need True image to create an image of the OSX partition. Itīs a non native sector per sector byte copy of the partition, when you select compression it is possible make the resulting image smaller. With True Image itīs possible to copy just about any filesystem that adheres to more or less standard partition table specs. I was able to make working backups of Linux (Suse and Mandrake installs), OSX, BeOS and various Windows installations with True Image.
Native OSX image software does support better compression methods when backing up OSX partitions, but the formats used are not supported by PC utilities.

Should I run DriveImage thru Windows to create the image, or thru the boot disk?

Ouch a reply half a year later. You could do either. The backed up data can be stored onto a FAT or NTSC harddrive as one single image file or parts that can fit on cd, dvd etc.
