Full Version: Login Items that won't give up

Recently I installed a nice little app called Tangerine that used to boot along with OS X. I tried several times to avoid this by deleting its entry in the Login Items tab of my account preferences panel. It never worked, as soon as I restarted, Tangerine would startup again and I could find its name in my list of Login Items again.

I had enough of the app and just deleted it with AppZapper 1.8, however the login item didn't disappear. I've searched both the /System/Library/StartupItems and /Library/StartupItems, but there's nothing related, and there's no StartupItems folder in my account's Library folder (Users/proteo/Library). I've searched the net but all I can find is related to deleting entries in one of those folders. There's another location where should I look at?

According to some web pages, storing the items in these folders is the only way to make them load at system startup, so how this damn thing works?

Thanks lot in advance!

The easiest way to figure out what was installed is to look at /Library/Receipts folder - it will probably have something like Tangerine.pkg that you can open with Pacifist. This will give you a hint about other files that may have been installed and need to be removed to delete it completely.

There are a few methods of getting something to run at boot or login on OSX. Start by reading here: http://developer.apple.com/macosx/launchd.html

Also, you may find this utility handy: http://lingon.sourceforge.net/
