I bought my Linksys WUSB54GC for just 24 euro's and it's working like a charm with the attached kext.
First download the driver http://www.ralinktech.com/drivers/Mac/RTUS..._2006_11_10.dmg
Install it
Put the attached kext in your /System/Library/Extensions folder and authorize it to copy over the old kext when the window pops up.
type the following in a terminal window:
sudo -s (enter your password)
sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/RT73USBWirelessDriver.kext
sudo chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/RT73USBWirelessDriver.kext
cd /System/Library
rm -rf Extensions.mkext Extenions.kextcache
sudo diskutil repairPermissions /
reboot
Now run the USB Wireless Utility from your application folder (If nothing is showed up, go to you System Preferences and then Network. It should say that a new network device (Ethernet Adapter) has been found. Save changes and try to run the USB Wirless Utility again.) and search for the wireless network.
Voila high speed wireless internet with the LinksysWUSB54GC and 10.4.8
I would like to thank SilverTab for the information.

Sorry it's in now, thanks for the information.
The change is an added key in the info.plist, with the information for the Linksys WUSB54GC
This is the key I added:

This is going to sound absolutely foolish, but I'm out of ideas.....I have 10.4.8 and I'm trying to get this WUSB54GC working on my computer. I've been trying for hours to figure out how to get this .kext file loaded into a non-existent System/Library/Extensions folder. I have absolutely no experience with the Terminal prompt system and just can't get my head around the Mac commands - I'm a recent convert to Mac's, love'm....just can't figure this out! I'd appreciate if anyone can give me some really simple instructions on how to get this wireless working with 10.4.8 on my Powerbook G4.
invalid8
I followed the instructions above and now have wireless working on my Dell D620. Thanks a bunch mate pirate2.gif !

Well, followed the following thread and found it worked perfectly. http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=33896

Had the idiot installer I was looking for..... thumbsup_anim.gif

humm nice. i was pointed to this topic showing what was done in getting a linksys wifi USB network adapter working in 10.4.8. which goes along with my problem. But with a different model of the wifi USB network adapter. i only hope the same can be done with my model of USB wifi adapter

i have a Linksys Wireless G USB Network Adapter with speedboost model number WUSB54GS.
The info for it shows up great in Apple system profiler in the USB tab but it will not work with the airport software for some odd reason. it does have the Broadcom chipset. it should work in tiger 10.4.8 but does not.

the forum i was at that pointed to this thread on these forums is here

Google Groups: G3-G5 list

and the thread from the forum linked above that was started about a wifi SB network adapter

eHome Products wireless G Adapters Question

and i posted that i had the same problem with my linksys Wirless-G USB network adapter with speedbooster model number WUSB54GS that has a broadcom chipset and i wondered why it didn't work in tiger cause i thought anything with a Broadcom chipset would work in tiger.

some one replied pointing to this thread saying it has something to do with the Vendor ID# (VID) and the product ID# (PID) in the info.plist file of some of the wireless Kexts or frameworks. I have read this topic but still would not know what to do to make this work if its even possible.

but anyway here is what the USB tab in ASP say's about my WIFI adapter

Linksys Wireless-G USB Network Adapter with SpeedBooster:

Version: 0.06
Bus Power (mA): 500
Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: Cisco-Linksys
Product ID: 0x000e
Serial Number: 1111
Vendor ID: 0x13b1

and if needed here is the numbers on the chipset

Broadcom
BCM4712KPB
HA0439 PII
729422P

if that helps anything but im at a total loss on what to do to get this working. as the person that pointed me to here said on his replay that if i didnt know what to do he can help me to get it working.

Thanks for the help in advanced all. should i have started a new topic. i can move this to where ever it needs to go but i was hoping i would run into the person that replied to me that pointed me here from the Google Groups G3-G5 lists
kangoo
i have the same problem as madmax_2069

I baught a Linksys WUSB54G but the probleme is that it is not a ver 4 it's a ver 2.1.

the good thing about it is that it goes up to 125 Mb/s

but like he just said before it is a Broadcom chipset

any one got an idea to make it work

cause i just throwed 50€ out the windows if i can't make it work

thanks to all
madmax_2069
should i start a new topic about my model of usb wifi adapter since my model number is diffrent

Are all of these USB cards based on the same chips? Is there a chance that the driver would work for some cards and not for others of the same model number, beacause of this?

is this the right link : http://www.ralinktech.com/ralink/data/RTUS...06_11_10.dmg?in the doc description on ralink website Install Package Version RTUSB D70-1.1.3.0 D71W-1.1.7.0 UI-1.3.0.0_2006_11_10.dmg ,so I guess I'll gie it a try

Sorry for such an old bump but I have a WUSB54GSC. Does the "S" mean this fix wont work?
CraigularB
Thanks for the info and files, Simania! I just got the 54GC and was hoping that it would work...I stumble across your thread and voila! Followed the directions exactly and it installed/is recognized no problem.

Haysead, if I had to guess I'd say that "S" denotes SpeedBooster, the tech Linksys uses to make G faster/farther-reaching. You could try this solution with it, but I'm not an authority to tell you it should or shouldn't work.

Thanks again!

-Craig
Software Updater
The "S" does mean a speed booster so I will try this and post back.

works like a charm, thanks!

the link is dead, so attaching the driver here. Works for me on my tibook running 10.4.10.

A godsend as my airport card died.

Which of these are working with Leopard ?
attempts
at the ralink website they have a new driver for leopard should we use this instead?
CraigularB
Hello! I recently installed 10.5.1, so I was also wanting WiFi with this device (I used it in 10.4.8 also). I tried the old installer, but it did not work. So, following the thought of attempts, I downloaded the installer for 10.5 and used the same KEXT and install method, with some modifications at the end. Enjoy!

Download the KEXT attached at the first post, and also download the new Ralink installer from here: http://www.ralinktech.com.tw/data/drivers/..._2007_11_26.dmg.

(The actual page is viewable here: http://www.ralinktech.com/ralink/Home/Support/Macintosh.html. The 1st link is directly to the DMG.)

Follow the instructions in the first post (ie don't reboot after the utility install, follow the terminal commands, then reboot).

Now the different part: the utility will probably pop up and will probably see the adapter/any wireless networks (mine did). However, OSX did not. Here's what I did:

1) Open up System Preferences, click on Network.
2) On the side-pane listing your network connections, click the "+" (plus sign) at the bottom. This opens the create new connection dialogue.
3) Under the "interface" drop-down, there will be 1 or 2 "ethernets" depending on your system. I have 2 because of the forcedeth drivers. In my case, the first "Ethernet" was the correct connection. Give it any name you like. Click "Create".
3a) The new connection should come up in the side-pane; if it says "No IP address", proceed to step 4. If it says "Not connected", proceed to step 3b.
3b) This was probably not the correct "Ethernet" interface. No matter; Simply delete what you just created, make a new one, and select the "Ethernet" you did NOT select the first time. Give it any name you like. Click "Create".
4) It says "No IP address"? GOOD! On the right side, use the "Configure" drop-down menu. Select "Using DHCP with manual address".
5) Type in an IP address that your computer would normally have (example, on my network, my computer is assigned the IP 192.168.0.101, so that's what I used).
6) Click "Apply".
7) It should automatically fill in Subnet Mask, Router, DNS Server, and Search Domains. If it did, CONGRATULATIONS! You have successfully configured your WUSB54GC to work in 10.5.x!

I don't know if I'm qualified to help if you have any problems, but I can try; all I did was use the new installer, same kext, and created a new network connection....It is actually possible that creating the new network connection with the 10.4.8 method/installer would have worked, but it was nice to have something written for 10.5. Good luck to everyone!

No - At least I was not able to get it working or WPA2, only WEP. WPA and WPA2 caused leopard/kalyway to crash.

I only a day my first mac, but if anyone can tell me why my USB wireless will only is recognized when I supply
"-f" as a boot parameter, I'd appreciate it. Also, where can I find a list of boot parameters?

Thanks

-Paul
CraigularB
Paul,

I'm not sure why it won't work either; I had to add the -f boot parameter to the boot plist file (I can't remember how to do that exactly, search around and you'll find it). That at least makes it less of a pain to do every time.

If you followed the directions it should work. Is the light blinking? Does the USBWirelessUtility show any networks?

I used Craig's instructions and my WUSB54GC works in 10.5.1, but I have to unplug it and plug it back in for it to be recognized. I do this every time I start up my Hackintosh.

Is there any way to get it to recognize and connect automatically?

Thanks

just thought I would post a small up date, everything worked great but the link for me, so

http://www.ralinktech.com.tw/data/RTUSB%20..._2006_11_10.dmg

and in case this link goes dead, got to www.ralinktech.com click support at the top of the page, click Mac and then download the USB
(RT257x/RT2671)
driver and it works GREAT!!!!

Thanks again!

JR-

Did you try booting with a "-f" flag at the Darwin prompt? Me and several others (I think most everyone who's tried this has needed it) need it to work every single boot; try that and hopefully it'll solve your problem. If that doesn't help, I'm not exactly sure what to tell you...I just modified an existing solution, I really don't know much else! rolleyes.gif

Hi all,

My WUSB54GC card is recognized in Jas 10.4.8 (thanks to the drivers mentioned on this forum!), but 10.4.8 says it's inactive. No matter what I try, it stays inactive.

It sees my wireless network at home, but I can't connect to it (WPA-TKIP).

Is there a way to activate the card, except by selecting it in the Network Assistant (which doesn't work)?

I'm a OS noob so I consulted 10.4.8 for dummies, O'reilly's, but to no avail. It seems a genuine Mac doens't need to be configured like Windows...

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Cheers, Toine

UPDATE: I'm online!! It's just that this driver, or 10.4.8, or whatever can't manage WPA!
I edited my wireless setup so it hasn't any security (except MAC-address) and I'm online as I'm typing biggrin.gif
Now I need to find out what security does work...

Thanks for all the drivers and info on this forum. As you can see, there's still pieces missing though.
But, here's another piece of the puzzle solved angel.png

Cheers, Toine

Hello,

I am having severe problems trying to configure the WUSB54GC to work with OS X 10.4.11.

I have found 3 different sets of steps posted by different users that have all claimed to have gotten it to work. However, all 3 of these instruction sets are flawed in their explanations. For example, none of these mention that the info.plist file and corresponding Content folder are read-only, THIS IS A CRUCIAL STEP NOT MENTIONED! How do you forget to mention that? An average computer user is supposed to know how to change this? So, I made the Content folder and files inside it Read and Write properties so I could edit the .plist file.

I got the info.plist file to open in Terminal and added the strings of code verbatim, just as these tutorials stated to do. However, I was then supposed to "Save" this. When I go to save this, Terminal tries to save it as a Terminal file. What (and where) do I save it as? Is there another program I can use to edit the text? Do I even need to use Terminal at all?

To sum it all up, I need a much easier way to go about getting this to work. A better explanation or a more concise set of instructions to follow. As it is at the moment, I have spent the better part of 3 days trying to configure something I spent good money on after reading that it would work on my Mac. I don't mean to sound hasty, as this is software not meant to be configured for a Linksys wireless card, but I am getting very aggravated by the lack of support or thorough set of steps in getting this to work.

HELP!!!!
skylines
I'm still trying to make sense out of the half-assed instructions.

It seems to me that I can modify the info.plist using a text program (which I have done) to insert the Linksys string. However, this is STILL not working for me. I've run out of ideas. I've tried so many times and tried different ways to go about making this work. Nothing.

Can anyone offer any kind of help? Surely, I can't be the only one having a problem with this.
Maybe recommend another PC USB Wireless Adapter that is more compatible or easier to configure that I can use on my eMac?

I am running OS X 10.4.11 by the way.

Skylines, there really is no need to change the info.plist file. The download posted by Simania_NL in the first post has the modified kext (plist file inside kext) that is necessary for this to work. The next post by him is just explaining what the change is in his posted file. All you have to do is install the Ralink drivers, then COPY the kext you download from the first post to your Extensions folder, run the Terminal commands and restart.

CraigularB, I appreciate the help. However, those instructions aren't working for me, still. I am on 10.4.11. The OP was using 10.4.8, maybe there is something different that has to be done in order to get it to work.

I did exactly what is in the instructions. Copied the kext from the attachment over the old one, booted up Terminal, and entered those commands. Reboot. Open the Wireless Utility, and it says "No Device". So I go to Network under System Preferences and there are no new connections available. Nothing changed.

Do you have any other options for me? What did I do wrong?

Hi! I'm very new to this Mac thing and I have the 10.5.1 install.
I have the WUSB54GC adapter too and I've tried Craig's solution several times w/o results. When I plug the USB key I get a message saying that WUSB54GC wasn't installed properly.

Any suggestions?
blozegotes
got it Craig - thanks!
leoms17
To clarify my problem:

After following all the steps mentioned by Craig I reboot, plug in the USB key and get the following message:
System extension cannot be used
The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/RT73USBWirelessDriver.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used.
Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update.

What can be wrong? I've tried this many many times now and always with the same result.

One more: at the beginning of this thread there's a line "rm -rf Extensions.mkext Extenions.kextcache", is it "Extenions.kextcache" or should it be "Extensions.kextcache". I've tried both, but I don't need password confirm to continue, like all other lines.

- i can install all options w/o problem. It detected, new eth interface shown in netwpref, had configured manual IP, etc.

- wirelessUSButility shows correct TX packets but noone was received correct.

I've tried to switch off WEP, WPA, reset my wireless router without success sad.gif

I also followed the instructions exactly and I was having the same problem as you on Kalyway 10.5.2, and solved it by using 'OSX86Tools' to install the kext (same as the first post) properly, then running all the maintenance script in that same program (repair permissions, etc). After a reboot, I plugged it in and it worked like a charm, streaming video right now...

hey guys
this is my first post so i hope im doing this right...

the process worked for me, as in, it shows up under apples System Profiler under the usb tab, however, it wont show up under System Preferences/Network sad.gif
And when i try to find it under usb wireless utility, it doesnt show up there either.
I installed that airport menu thing that prasys made (v015) and it didnt help, and when i installed her drivers, it made it disappear from the system profiler (maybe i unplugged and then replugged it back in without thinking, and that was the problem, because it doesnt seem to want to show up unless its plugged in on startup, but prasys' fix should fix that) so i followed the instructions again and now it shows up under system profiler again however, it still wont show up under system preferences/network. Here are the specs on my wusb54gc usb wireless linksys adapter.

Version: 0.01
Bus Power (mA): 500
Speed: up to 480 mb/sec
Manufacturer: Cisco-Linksys
Product ID: 0x0020
Vendor ID: 0x13b1

Perhaps, if i was to change something under the IONETWORKINGFAMILY.KEXT as in, say, add the RT73USBWIRELESSDRIVER.KEXT to plugins, and then editing the INFO.PLIST file for the kext, by adding the PNP ID for the linksys device, it would work? any input would be great. thanks.

O ya, and im running on the Jas dvd 10.4.8 with the added applications (i upgraded) from the uphuck dvd (10.4.9).

After following the instructions exactly, I'm now posting this reply on my iBook G4 (12" 1.33ghz) using the Linksys WUSB54GC (the Cisco-Linksys version, 0.01).

I can't thank you enough! My iBook suffers from the Airport>Logic Board fiasco, so wireless for me was only a possibility if I kept pushing down on the area next to the trackpad; even then it would eventually hit a KP.

But now, those days are gone.

Thanks again!
