I bought a cheap VIA 6306 chipset firewire card off eBay, and plugged it in. OSX recognizes the card, but no devices that I plug in. Any ideas?

No ideas, but I can tell you that I bought an ultra-cheap FW PCI card with NEC chipset (see my sig for link) that worked perfectly in 10.4.6 with my Sony HDR-RC1 digicam. I haven't tested it again since I upgraded to 10.4.8, but the card is still recognized in system profiler.
