Hi guys, i've got a problem and could really use some help.
I've just downloaded kalyway 10.5.2 and it installs fine. But when I try the kalyway 10.5.3 update and follow the instruction from:
http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=108216I can't get past sudo -s
Every time I type this command i get 'try again' when I try to type in my password. I have tried reinstalling 2-3 times and still the same problem. - it just won't take my password.
- also, if I try to access system preferences after trying this, the computer freezes.
If I ignore this and reboot with 'update -v' I get 'waiting for root device'.
PLEASE HELP!!!!
- BTW I have a Dell Dimension 9200, 4GB RAM, Q6600 (QUAD CORE).
- I also have leo4all v3 which I have patched from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3, but I can't even get into the installer with this disk - just get stuck on 'waiting for for device' error..
Do You have a password? or did you just leave it blank. I know you get that error when no password is selected for that account. And to fix the waiting for root devices, do you had raid set to auto?

Hello,
I have an XPS 410 - Kalyway 10.5.2. I have tried ABSOLUTELY everything on these forums that I can find about getting audio to work on this. The AppleHDA Audio Patcher doesn't do a thing. I still have no sound icon and it says 'No Output devices found" in the audio control panel.
Anyone else have this problem at all and able to give some suggestions?
It's the only thing keeping me from using OSX full time on this machine.
Thanks

Use TOH leopard then the pc efi and 10.5.3 update instuctions at netkas.org and the HDA patcher. Kalyway gave me nothing but problems.

Hey all...
Been awhile since I've been on. Nice to see this thread is still alive.
So, I installed ToH, used the Best Post-Patch, and used Software Update to go to 10.5.1... I used netkas guide to upgrade to 10.5.2, although I used it for 10.5.4. It worked, but then I got the "root device" error rather than MACH_REBOOT. I then restored and tried 10.5.3 with the same method; same result. What am I missing? Why is the update breaking my install. By the way, I'm all vanilla with EFI; havent put in sound or nvinject yet.
Thanks in advance!

You dont need netkas instructions for 10.5.4 it works just fine from software update. And What post patch are you using. I never have had to use any post patch on Toh just had to boot to DVD and bless the drive after installation to get it to boot with out building a bridge from the DVD First. Then use netkas 10.5.2 method and the same for 10.5.3. There is nothing to you have to do with 10.5.4 but click update in software update. So Reinstall Toh then do the upgrades just as i said and it should fix your problem. And how did you use netkas instructions for 10.5.4? There Is no "install at start up" file created. Let me know if you need anything else

Perhaps I'm mistaken in my version numbers; it was a very long day yesterday, but I'm pretty sure it was 10.5.4. I do remember that two errors were trapped in terminal when power management was caught and deleted at 49% (this did not happen with 10.5.3 combo). This was a combo update from 10.5.1 to 10.5.4; not delta. As for the post patch, it was this thread ->
http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=75974I tried to go from 10.5.1 directly to 10.5.3 with a combo update using netkas guide. I will try 10.5.1 -> .2 -> .3 -> Delta 4 tonight and let you know. I appreciate the quick response.
Thanks!
P.s. You state I should go from ToH 10.5 to 10.5.2 using netkas; Should I also get the Vanilla kernel and PC_efi as per your instructions in this thread? ->

What a nightmare! I spent hours trying every combination possible. Followed all the instructions to a T, and yet my Dell sat there laughing at me. It thinks "Still searching for root device" is the punch line to some hilarious joke. And like an annoying child it just kept repeating it.
Anyway... so can I run vanilla from Leo4All? Same process more or less?
Thanks in advance!

I got Leo4All v3 and installed vanilla (no need to bless the drive - just worked). The nvidia inject worked spot on for my 8800 GT from BFG (what a plus!). Everything seems to be working, but no sound. Taruga's wiki site is suspended, so it's a no go for the patcher. I can't seem to find a version 1.2 anywhere on the net either. I thought the Azailia Audio option from install would have worked, but no joy. Any thoughts? Also, I read that the HDA patcher can mess with shut down on 10.5.4. I'd hate to go get USB audio when I have a perfectly good output panel on back.
What are you using for audio on your Leo4All box? What version: 10.5.2, .3, or .4?

I'm 10.5.4 with sound and all is well! I could have saved hours just going the Leo4All route to begin with. Oh well. Thanks for all the help bigdaddy.

I wanted to know how efficient time machine is at backing things up, i have a spare drive identical to the one im using to run osx and i was thinking about using it as a slave and filling it with the time machine backups... will it backup my vmware fusion files too? How about the application itself?
Or better yet, how could i set up a raid?

I had that problem too. Don't know what went wrong but i just left it for 10 minutes and it eventually booted. However every subsequent boot was just as slow until i formatted the disk with the problem. I think some part of the boot sector got corrupted and it drove the Intel AHCI manager crazy.
Time machine will back up everything in your user account and your applications. The VMWare disks are in your user account from what i remember.

I have been using Time Machine for about two days now. I have a 500GB SATA drive that was one Vista partition. I shrank the Vista partition to 300GB and gave the Mac 200GB to use.
When I originally tried to get Time Machine to run, I kept getting an error message that I couldn't solve. I wish I could remember the exact error message, but I failed to write it down.

I made sure I had all of the updates but 10.5.4 and it finally worked. After I had about a days worth of backups, I went ahead with the 10.5.4 update through the Software Update tool. It worked just fine. (BTW--I did the original install from Kaly's 10.5.2 DVD, then used Kaly's 10.5.3 upgrade)
My suggestion is: get all of the updates you can and make sure that you're using Time Machine on a disk that's completely separate from your main system disk. I actually run my OS from an external USB drive, and things run quite efficiently.

same here. i have tried to format HDD's but no change so i have tried to install windows bootloader, then ubuntu and then again Mac OS but no go. looks like i have to live with it. it started after month ago when i tried to defragment my drives (don't ask me why

My onboard NIC still works fine. It might be a different hardware problem. Or it may be that your onboard NIC is conflicting with you PCI NIC.
Did you fix the waiting at the RAID BIOS screen? In my case it wasn't caused by a drive Mac OS was on or could even see. It was caused by my RAID drive that booted windows.
EDIT: Do you have the latest bios?

I'm back again

Anyways, anyone know how to update to 10.5.3 from kalyway 10.5.2? Yes I read your posts Rob and it's sort of a hassle going through that much trouble to install efi (LOL i'm lazy). Of course, there's always OSx86tools. But anyways I've already tried the ToH installer and it won't work for me.
When I try update from Kalyway the whole OS crashes at 40% copied. No matter if I choose 10.5.3, or 4 or 5. Then I get "Still waiting for root device" and it's a "hybrid" install that doesn't work.
Anyone have any news on using boot-132? I'm curious as to whether that will work on XPS410 but I want to keep windows until I know that it'll definitely work, because it'll take maybe 4 hours to do that.
Or maybe I should try iATKOS v4
The 82566 driver works great, while I had 10.5.2 it went smoothly until that stupid install.
EDIT: Ooops, ToH isn't 10.5.2! it's 9a581 (forgot)
So.... now what?

Hey folks. Great forum.
I have a Dell XPS 410 and before I delve into this, I wonder whether it'd be worth it or not:
Core 2 Duo E6600
ATI Radio X1300/X1550
Creative Labs SB X-Fi
Dell 24" 2407WFP Widescreen LCD Monitor
Logitech 2.1 X230 speakers/subwoofer
Linksys WUSB54GC Wireless adapter
Microsoft Wireless Multimedia Keyboard 1.1
Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse 2000
Can anyone see at a glance any irremediable conflicts? I've been reading this thread and it looks like different configurations of the XPS 410 have been used in this adventure. I'm curious to see whether mine can run mostly successfully with Kalyway or iDeneb. I'm also concerned I might overwrite some of my existing HD data if I partition it if I do a MacOS install.
Thanks to anybody who knows enough to reply!
