So my mini was happily running 10.4.7 when just about 30 mins ago, the volume control on my apple keyboard stopped working. When I try and go into System Preferences to check the audio section, I get pinwheeled and go no further.

When I create a second (temporary) account, everything works fine with that account (I can raise and lower sound from the keyboard and go into all of System Preferences)

I have run "repair disk permissions" and a "verify disk", but they haven't helped (nor did they turn up anything).

I also found in Activity Monitor then when I log in, I have one task in red. The task is:
