many are willing to buy hardware especially for osx
please everybody with a properly working rig:
post it here and tell us what you did to make it work properly
post the rig specs
one line per component - and if it worked out of the box or not
then write about more about the rig
what you did to make it work properly
issues you havent sorted out yet
things you havent properly tested yet
and
would you recommend your rig as a primary workhorse ?
does it have any of the following common problems (please pm me if you want to add something here)
motherboard:
sound in
stereo sound out
network (especially gigabit)
sleep
firewire
usb2.0
booting from firewire or usb 2.0
target disk mode
sata
raid functionality
graphics card problems:
dual display

My system has following components.
ECS 915P-A mainboard
- s-ata works perfect (standard ICH6 so has 4 S-ata ports but no Raid)
- USB (appears) to work perfect (My logitech 4000pro webcam does, except the sound is dodgy probably a software thing as logitech program is supposed for 10.3)
- audio (C-Media CMI9880) out works in Stereo but there's no main (desktop) volume slider. Individual volume slider of apps work perfect.
- audio in untested. I suspect it doesn't work
- GigaLAN (Realtek RTL8110S-32) is working as 100TX-lan but since its a PCI-controller it won't reach full potential anyway so doesn't bother me anyway. Can set it to GigaLAN in preferences but doesn't seem to improve transfer rates.
This board has both DDR1 and DDR2 (DDR2 gives no significant improvement on i915 chipset but its nice to be able to use it if you want). It also has both AGP and PCI-E so you might still be able to use that AGP Radeon 9600. I haven't tried that slot as I only have a PCI-E card. I remember a 9600 working. This board has NO firewire like its expensive sibling PF-4 but that also has other type of LAN controller (Marvell 88E8001-LKJ) which i suspect gives more headache in OSX86 and PF-4 gives no better performance either (even with DDR2).
Saphire 144L Radeon X1600pro GDDR2 256MB: A faster card doesn't give much significant improvement in OSX86 according to XBench. X1600 does "feel" faster then X600 but I dunno if its just my imagination or real (system profiler 'profiles' faster indeed). I previously owned an X600pro and also used an X800 for awhile. Xbench gives about same performance figures on all these cards while X1600 is supposedly significantly faster then X600.
Installed with Boris installer (I couldn't get the manual editing of kext files to work) and works beautifully
- CI, QE and QE 2D working. Rotation supported. Not tried dual monitor (Suspect that doesn't work) but if used in single monitor mode then both VGA and DVI work
- NO mouse tearing
- NO pointer dissapearing after using full screen application/game
- NO more disturbing double pointers (e.g. Spinning colour wheel + arrow at the same time with Mouse-locator). Usuall shadow under pointer just like real mac.
- resolution AND proper colour depth swithing. Latter didn't work very well with X600pro and Callisto.
I only found (so far) that the Dashboard ripple efect is weird.
I use a HT P4 3GHz 6x0 series (the one with 2MB Cache). This gives a preformance rating of 97 in Xbench. Which means this rig is about as fast as a Dual G5 2GHz. Maxtor s-ATA hdd (take notice that this board only has ONE P-ATA connector!!!) S-ATA drives appear in BIOS as IDE-devices and get fully seen under OSX86 as S-ata :-)
I have Samsung SH-W162C p-ata DVD-burner. Works perfectly with Toast under OSX86 (tested Toast 6 and Toast 7 Titanium). Both with DVDs and CDs.
I'm using 10.4.5 as this version has apparantly best hardware compatibility with present hardware. I have been tempted to upgrade but since OpenGL is faulty in 10.4.7 I decided to stick with 10.4.5. Especially since most ppl are using older drivers with 10.4.7 so why switch anyway. As for 10.4.6 the only upgraded part on that is bluetooth but I got my MSI USB bluetooth antenna working great on 10.4.5 with my cellphone (SE K750i) so again 'why bother'. At least sending out files from the phone works great. Haven't tried anything else because I didn't expect it to work in the first place so I was pleasantly surprised to see a bluetooth icon on my desktop anyway.
Sleep button seems to get computer to sleep but wake up doesn't work. I have a Linkworld LK1000 keyboard with (working) power button so I can switch on/off the "mac" from the keyboard. Some o/t multimedia keys also work (e.g. audio-mute). I've put all in Linkworld Mac-look-a-like case with silent 420W PSU.
All in all I'm very happy with this configuration. It has enough parts like a real mac (X1600, 8x DVDV burner e.g.) or dev-mac (i915) to get it working... lets say 97% of a real mac, at 97% of dual G5 2GHz speed for about 55% or 60% the price of a real Intel iMac (the cheapest model). I think that's a pretty good deal.
I hope this the info you need?

lol I can't imagine a P4 being anywhere near as fast as a dual G5. In my expereince, P4 is a slow hot POS
I get xbench of 240 on 3.6ghz
ASUS P5W DH Deluxe
Everything but the remote, sound in and onboard wifi (can't test that com port or whatever it is) - sound needs modded to work, changing numbers in some files - firewire works
sleep - sleeps fine until display driver installed
target disk mode - obviously not
raid functionality - don't know
Intel E6600 @ 3.6GHz
what can I say? It is fast and both cores work
2GB G.Skill NR PC2-6400
It works...
ATI X1800XT
Plays games at 1920x1200 with full CI and QE without mouse tearing - DVI doesn't display any picture and have to use one of my vga adaptors! Sucks as I use a high res 1920x1200 display. Don't need a 2nd display so haven't tested that - needed modded with boris patch
Pioneer DVR109
Works with full support from the OS
ASUS DVD-E616A2
Reads disks fine (it isn't a burner)
Seasonic S12 430W
Great silent PSU
Zalman CNPS9500 & VF-900
The VF-900 is so much quieter then the stock cooling and also has a lower idle than competitors

Antec P180
Great case

just be careful not to scratch it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It also file shares fine

Jas 10.4.6

The figures quoted are from xBench. The info supplied also says that 100 is equal to a Dual core G5 2GHz so having 97 means that this rig is about as fast as a dual core G5 2Ghz. This is according to xBench. Now that you think that a P4 is POS is your opinion but at least my rig works for 97% (appart from volume slider on desktop, audio in and Gigalan being 100TX-lan, these are the ONLY 3 things I noticed so far, of which volume slider and gigalan being 100TX are no big deals anyway. Personally I don't miss audio-in either.

both cores???? I thought this was a quad core cpu.
Anyway. Your rig seems "interesting" but I think it'll cost a bot more then 700 euro, doesn't it?

the E6600 is a dual core (Core 2 Duo). Quad Core has not been released yet.

I also have the Asus P5W DH Deluxe, but with a Pentium D 940 instead of Core 2 Duo (waiting for the price to drop).
And just as graeme43 said, everything works great. SATA, Both NICS (Dual Gigabit), Detects all memory, sound works with a small patch (2 channel stereo, no input) My BENQ CD/DVDR also works fine right through the os.
Not sure what else there is. I am getting ready to test it on my Toshiba Qosmio G15-AV501 1.8Ghz P-M

Here's one you can buy off the shelf, but you'll need to upgrade using JaS 10.4.6 PPF1 [for ATI IDE controller], and THEN installing the AMD 10.4.7 update:
eMachines T6412/T6524 - $350-$600
•Athlon 64 3400-3500+ <--SSE3 capable, SSE2 working w/ installer patches
•512-1,024MB Dual Channel RAM
•2x IDE <-- working /4x SATA <-- currently non-working
•Realtek 100Mbps LAN <-- working
•Realtek AC97 <-- non-working, replace with $30 Turtle Beach Micro Advantage USB
•Radeon X200 128MB shared <-- non-working, replace with $70 X300 PCIe w/ MouseLocator for full QE/CI/Q2DE w/o tearing*
•16x DLMF DVDRW <-- working, and fully supported using PatchBurn
•7x USB 2.0 / 2x FireWire 400 <-- working
Functionality Issues:
•sound in
•sleep
•sata
Does it make a good Primary machine? Well, I've used it exclusively since the end of March for everything ranging from iMovie/iDVD projects, to running and organizing my daily life. The best part about this rig is the performance potential. It started out with a single-core 3500+ and has since grown to a dual-core 4200+ with no ill effects. RAM has doubled to 2GB Dual Channel as well. I don't know of a better, cheap way to do it!

Gateway GT5014
I got this rig working with all of the wonderful help/patches found here:
Added to the baseline rig:
2 Additional Gb or RAM (3 total)
ADD2 DVI Adapter
120 Gb hard drive for OSX86
I use the motherboard built in F10 function to select my boot drive so I don't need to partition.
Sound works out of the black connector (stereo) and sounds great when I jam iTunes.
Video card works out of DVI on my BENQ 19" 1280x1024 display -- gorgeous! I just bought the new wingnuts 2 and played it over the weekend. The graphics are great and fast! I have allocated the full 224 Meg RAM to video.
DVD +/- works
The Media Card bay works
It all works! And might I say it ROCKS! I have a G4 1Ghz with 1.25 Gb or RAM, and the above rig is orders of magnitude faster. It boots in about 15 second -- just sick!
Oh, BTW, I bough the rig at a CompUSA closeout price of $539 with 1 Gb RAM and 250 Gb hard drive.
I added $36 for the ADD2, $280 for the memory, and had a spare 120 Gb SATA drive lying around.
My total out of pocket to have a dual boot Windows MCE2005 and OSX86 10.4.7 system was $885 (I spent like $90 on the drive some time ago, so counting that $975).
Best,
MDG.

Dell Dimension DIM9100
motherboard: Dell 945P [Baed on Intel]
sound in - Works , at least I could connect the mic !
stereo sound out - Works as well
network (especially gigabit) - No , it does not show up. But i think its possible to patch it
sleep - Works without macvidia [VESA]
firewire -N/A
usb2.0 - Works
booting from firewire or usb 2.0 - N/A
target disk mode - Not supported
sata - Works
raid functionality - N/A
graphics card problems: No QE/QI
dual display - N/A
display resolution - LCD Native (1280x1024)
open gl - games, 3d apps - N/A
But if I use back my original Dell X300SE , it works . I get QE/QI , its just that i am having issues with the mouse tearing thingy. For now I am sticking with 7300GT [As i have heard , Macvidia's team are working hard]
network: ASUS WL-167 WiFi Card [ works with Ralink's driver]
filesharing with windows : Not yet tested
everything else works. Pretty much , OSX86 works out of the box. You would just need to patch ATI's graphics card and the sound driver [and the network driver].....One drawback , its using the SSE2 kernel , because of Intel/Dell's SSE3 problem thingy , other than that it works fine. The performance is amazing , I could say its par with a 1.8Ghz Dual G5.

Dell Dimension 1100
Intel Celeron D 2.6Ghz - SSE3 and fully functionly speed, etc
Intel Graphics 82855 Extreme 2 - Fully supported at 1024x768 but no qe & ce as it's not supported by card (this is a bad card, onboard)
SoundMax Build in Audio, Microphone too - works with changing speaker channels easily done in Preferences and microphone just works.
Keyboard runs normal but uses Windows key as Apple, alt is better. Mouse supports scrolling and rightclick (logitech or Dell)
All USB ports are detected and work
3 Drive bays all work with CD/DVD but no internal floppy (as it's not supported anyways)
Everything on this system works fine, but I recommend getting a Radeon x1600 or higher for best performance (do not get x1300).
You don't really need all the specs, as this system is basic system and is ready to go with 10.4.8 and latest kernels (when update is available). It lacks a good graphics card and has a celeron which can be a little slow but is great for non-mac-os-x-games.

OSX on IDE Drive (for convenience)
XP on SATA Drive
OSX Able to access all Drives

Onboard LAN,Sound,SATA working,
DVDRW/CDRW working (NEC and MSI)
6800Geforce 256mb card - QE/CI working in 1680 x 1050 on my 23" beauty.
Only complaints (feel free to rectify)
@ and ". I have a PS2 keyboard, not a USB one. Any fixes I have found, dont work

Adobe CS3 beta doesnt work. at all. Just crashes out straight away. Could be as its a beta software, but who knows.
That annoying message I get EVERY BOOT saying that "Titan.kext cannot be loaded". I know it cant, I removed it myself.
CS:S not running as fast as I want it to, randomly crashing, and not reconising that ive swapped control and alt around in OSX. then again OSX doesnt reconise that (see USB keyboard note)
Aside from that, its been my main OS for me and my family now (wife and 2 kids) since I installed. Wife has adapted to Safari as opposed to Firefox / IE7 (vista) easily enough, and has very few complaints especially as she is a fan of itunes, and says that the OS "fits better with itunes than vista". Best opinions are from newbies, IMHO. Myself, Ive done a bit of dreamweaver, email, VLC, newsgroup, bittorrent, photoshop (CS2), illustrator, and loved every moment of it. Only boot XP to play games / program (only learning), so id give OSX on a hackintosh a massive thumbs up!.
Also, built a friend a custom PC for hackintosh.
Used a cheap Asrock motherboard (945 chipset)
Intel 2.13ghz core2duo
1gb DDR2 800
120gb SATA2 HDD
7300GT 256mb GFX.
Worked out of the box bar LAN and Audio. LAN was a installer to run (took all of 3 seconds) and audio needed a kext edit. Given i was absoloutley leathered at the time, I installed OSX and appplied both fixes without a hitch (to my major suprise).
Friend has used the hack for a week now, loves it and is getting to grips with his day-to-day tasks on it (inc MSN Skype and pr0n surfing) with no complaints. starting to chuck the big apps at it (photoshop et al) and hes loving it still.
Both of us love the RSS screensaver, if only it was a bit more customisable!!! (hint hint apple).
Both pc's are more than usable as main PC's / OS's, and both bench between 100-120 (with the AMD benching higher than the Intel, which shocked me.)
Hope that helps.

On-board USB2.0, Firewire 400
Working perfectly fine.
On-board 56K Modem
Not detected, not tested, not working. I don't care, I don't use this anyway.
PCMCIA Slot
Not tested, I don't have any cards to test with.
Synaptics Touchpad
Scrolling is not working, doesn't disable when USB mouse is plugged in.
Tapping and Tap-Drag works fine.
"Ignore accidental input" doesn't seem to work.
Audio DJ Keys and Fn Keys not working.
Sleep not working.
Overall it's a nice and fast laptop for OS x86, some things aren't working but it works well enough to use on a daily basis. I triple boot XP, OS X, SuSE Linux.

This is the first system I built, 100% compatible in every way. No .kext editing, no driver installations, nothing. The only flaw was sound-in didn't work.
Motherboard: Intel D915GAVL.
Processor: Pentium 4 524. 3.06 GHz. LGA775, Hyperthreading, SSE3, NX bit, EM64T. REPLACE THE STOCK HEATSINK.
Memory: 1.5GB DDR333 SDRAM
Graphics: On-board. GMA900. Installed the old-school GMA900 enabler. Worked perfect. No problems at all.
Audio: Intel High-Definition. Realtek ALC860. Worked perfect. No patches required. No sound-in.
Hard Drive: 250GB SATA Samsung SpinPoint. No complaints.
Optical Drives: 16x Lite-On DVD-R/-RW/+R/RW. Works perfect; 52x Lite-On CD-R/RW. Works perfect.
Networking: Built-in Intel 10/100. Worked perfect. No patching.
SATA: Operational and working perfect.
Pros: Motherboard is DIRT CHEAP and 100% compatible in every way. SATA, Graphics, Sound, NIC. Apple used this board in the developer machines.
Cons: Lackluster CPU support (Pentium 4 and Celeron D). DDR-support only. GMA900 isn't great. Becoming slowly outdated.
This is the second system I built. It's really just a new motherboard in my old rig:
Motherboard: Intel D945GTPLR
Processor: Pentium 4 524. 3.06 GHz. LGA775, Hyperthreading, SSE3, NX bit, EM64T. REPLACE THE STOCK HEATSINK.
Memory: 1.0GB DDR2 400 SDRAM
Graphics: On-board. GMA950. Used JaS' 950 enabler.
Audio: Intel High-Definition. Sigmatel 9223. Sound out of sound-in port. Kind of poor audio quality at low volumes. Patch required.
Hard Drive: 250GB SATA Samsung SpinPoint. No complaints.
Optical Drives: 16x Lite-On DVD-R/-RW/+R/RW. Works perfect; 52x Lite-On CD-R/RW. Works perfect.
Networking: Built-in Intel 10/100. Required a .kext edit.
SATA: Operational and working perfect.
Pros: Motherboard is very cheap if you find it on eBay. Everything works, but LAN and sound requires a patch.
Cons: Does not support the Core line processors. Pentium D is the best you can do. Sound isn't "perfect", but good. GMA950 isn't the most wonderful graphics adapter ever.

my

:
I have almost
exactly the same setup. Must say the motherboard works pretty perfectly in 10.4.8, it even has
firewire!I am using the Pentium 4 630 CPU with 2gb of ram, and I must say it works quite well. If I upgrade, I would go straight for the Core 2 line of CPU's though, so I would get another motherboard. Best CPU for this mobo is the Pentium D 930, it has VT extensions and Dual Core...
No crashes of iMovie or any apps yet
I upgraded my graphics to Nvidia 7600GS 256mb, fully working with Natit.
Compared to the GMA 950, Core Image programs are MUCH faster, eg:Chocoflop, and when I enabled
Quartz 2D Extreme the user interface sped up a LOT as well, expose much smoother etc.

Running 10.4.8 on newest kernel.
ASUS K8NE-Deluxe:
ac97 sound - works without a hitch
gigabit ethernet - needed forcedeath patch (I think that is the name of the patch. It came with the install CD prepatched.)
SATA - hardware has 2 types of sata on it physically on two parts of the board. 1 works and 1 doesn't. The one that does work needed to be patched. Patching the install CD did the trick to make the iso equivelent of tubgirl's release.
AMD 3200+ (SSE2) - Has anyone ever had an issue with their cpu? Pointless to bring it up.
2gig pc3200 DDR - Has anyone ever had an issue with their memory? Pointless to bring it up.
Nvidia Geforce 5200 FX - Installed a patch + AGPGart and have full CI/QE support without any issues.
Am I forgetting anything?
Computer is 99.9% functional.

I left off the .1% because installing certain programs require minor tweaks sometimes like parallels.
xbench score: 89.77
notes: I recommend if you want to use parallels to run windows and os x at the same time have at least processor with 2 cores to support the load, and at least memory as fast as ddr2, or using mass amounts of memory turns the computer into a snail because the memory is slower being only pc3200. It is far from required, but personally I would like to have things a tad smoother. I think once parallels supports direct x fully, then the speed might change.

Dell Vostro 200 Slim works perfectly if you add a cheap Geforce 7300
I got this pc 2 weeks ago, on sale for $359, and installed KalyWay 10.5.2
