hi everybody,

I am looking into buying a cheap PC laptop and occasionally run osx86 on it. HP nx6310 seems like a good choice, however there is hardly any info on compatibility. do you use this notebook and what is your experience with osx86 on it?

the configuration i am thinking of getting is:
HP Compaq nx6310 (EY503ES) [Celeron M 410 (1.46 GHz, 1MB L2, 533MHz), 15" XGA (1024x768), 256MB DDR2 533MHz, HDD 60GB 5400rpm, DVD+/-RW, LAN, 56K , FireWire , 802.11b/g, battery 6 Cell LiIon] and i can get it for less than half a price of a MacBook...

from your experience, what hardware from this list works with osx86 10.4.7? are there any issues still unresolved?

to take up less of your time to answer, could you just mark with '+' next to each item, but of course any comments would be appreciated:

keyboard/trackpad (fn keys) -
video card (QE/CI support, external display) -
hdd -
dvdrw -
lan -
wireless -
firewire -
usb -
power management (battery info, processor throttling, sleep mode, display brightness) -
sound (speakers, output, input, mic) -
pcmcia -
anything else -

i will be VERY grateful for your reply.

Forget it...it hangs with the same unresolved kernel trap message at boot using the 10.4.8 JaS DVD. sad.gif

If you run a dual core, try disabling a core. If you can turn down power management settings in bios, do that as well. Tweak the mess out of laptops because we have no clue what bios settings actually do for them on the inside. I got around my kernel traps doing the same smile.gif

Hi James!

Thank you for the quick response. My laptop has a "Yonah" Celeron M CPU, but as far as I know it does even support SSE3. I am sitting in front of it right now, trying to able to boot from the mentioned DVD...so following your advice I try disabling power management features first, but in the meantime it would be great if you could provide some additional hints and tricks. Especially if you encountered similar problems with your laptop over there. wink.gif (Does it have nothing to do with FSB settings for example? Does it help if I write down and link the kernel trap message?)

Thanks in advance,
Waingro

Hi Waingro

Re: Nx6310

Yonah Celeron M is an SSE3 Processor

I did Ever install with JaS 10.4.6

Wireless Broadcom work fine
Ethernet Broadcom BCM 440 work fine
SATA work natively

Only sound don't work out of the box
HDA SoundMax
Got no time to fix the Sound Problems cause my pal want it back fast
according to forums
Remove AppleHDA.kext and use AppleAzaliaAudio methods in the Forums

Hope it help

Hi guys,

Thanks for the help and additional info, but my problem is I cannot even BOOT from the JaS 10.4.8 DVD, which I used to install onto my desktop flawlessly. It always hangs at one point with the same kernel trap message. If I cannot even boot, I am in no position to play around with removing extensions. I cannot query the available boot options with the "?" key, because it prints something which has no sense at all. The only boot option I know so far is "-v"...please provide a link to the others, if you know them. The BIOS of the laptop is extremely simple, it doesn't even provide power managament options: everything is handled via the OS. If you ask me, for me it's no trouble at all. Specifications included.

Thank you in advance,
Waingro
james2mart
"-v" = verbose mode
"-s" = single-user mode (extreme debugging - gives bash prompt)
"-x" = safe mode (non-intensive debugging - gives gui w/ limitations)
"fsb=xxx" = sets kernel clock
"cpus=X" = informs kernel of number of logical cpus

According to Intel's chart, your FSB is probably 100, 133, or 200.

Flags that i dont know what they do are:

idlehalt=0
fn=3

maybe people can post these.
Waingro
According to the specifications (and to the linked system analysis) the FSB is 133. But regardless what I set, the system hang occours. Does the kernel trap message contain anything useful? I mean it mentions the same 3 files (kexts?) always. Is it possible to dump the messages of the boot process into a file, instead of taking a digital photo of my laptop screen? smile.gif
james2mart
No text dumps until you get to bash.

can you -s and get to bash?
Waingro
Following your advice, I am currently installing 10.4.6 onto the machine. It booted flawlessly! I wonder what goes wrong with 10.4.8... Anyway, if I am able to finish this, I will post my results. But as for the starting post: it seems that there are several very different configurations of the nx6310 available...interesting. You can find my specifications in one of my previous posts.
Waingro
Results: interestingly, GMA950 gets full QE and CI acceleration, but the integrated "Broadcom Corporation BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX" doesn't work. The OS sees the hardware as the integrated network controller, but always says "network cable is unplugged". It also detects the FireWire adapter and even the integrated WiFi as Airport Extreme. The "Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) HD Audio Controller" doesn't work either. sad.gif Can anyone help in getting Network and Audio to work? Thank you!

Try this to solve the Ethernet Broadcom BCM 440 problems

QUOTE
Hi everyone!

I solve the problem. You must completely shut down computer when you change from XP to MAC to make BCM 440 working!.

QUOTE
i have had the same problem and it works great for me. the totally shutdown and reboot in OS X ... but its a little bit strange, that the system couldn't work on warm reboot with the ethernet.

I have try it before and it work
off topic:
The wireless (Airport) blue light indicator is a bit dim but it work

I have try to solve the Sound Problems but no success
that time no one has solved the HDA Soundmax

Later someone reported making it work by using AppleAzaliaAudio.kext
I have no try it cause the Nx6310 is not with me anymore

By using Rammjet ( InsanelyMac Deity)methods
AppleAzaliaAudio.kext is for Realtek
But someone try it on HDA SoundMax and it work

You have to remove AppleHDA.kext in /System/Library/Extensions/

refer to this link

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=121883

Give this a try
Thanks Rammjet if you succeeded

the only thing i am missing is the hibernation mode and battery-display ... just a few minutes ago my laptop just turns off because i forgot to plug it into the wall tongue.gif

is there anyone who solved this problem?

i tried some ACPI "fixes" and after every try i had to reinstall leo because it was broken.
