Hello Everyone,

I'm running OSx86/Windows XP on a HP dv1708nr notebook. It has a Celeron M 410 1.46Ghz Processor./i945 intel chipset. Basically I'm having overheating issues when I run osx for over 30 minutes. The computer becomes extremely hot. About this Mac reports the bus speed as 2.13 Ghz, although I'm not sure about that.
Also the CPU fan rarely if ever comes on. I don't have these issues when running Windows.
Is there a way to underclock my CPU in OSX so that the computer does not get boiling hot, or a way to make the fan spin more often?

Sorry to hijack your thread - I am thinking about buying one of those laptops - how easy was it to install OS X - what hardware works? doesn't work?

you should check this site to download temperature monitor so you can be sure if really the computer is running hot under osx

I had a similar problem on my Dell C640 Laptop. It has a Pentium M @ 1.8 GHz. It says the speed is 2.4GHz. My system would get really hot too. My fan would run constantly though. It appease that the heat problem went away after I did the following...

1. Set Bios to Boot at full speed.
2. Setup Power Management "as shown in the forums"
3. Turned off Beam Sync

If all this does not work there are config files that Apple uses to turn on the fan at specified temps. I am not sure if it will work with Intel machines.

I modded this file on my iBook and was able to get the fan to turn on sooner which made the laptop run cooler.

Thank you for all your responses. However, I tried them all and none of them worked. Credit goes to paulicat who discovered the fix. Basically, the issue was that Mac OS X cannot run the fan on my computer correctly, so it ends up overheating. (71 degrees C and up started to burn my legs.) Paulicat reasoned that letting the motherboard take over the fan is better that the OS, so you do the following:

Find the file AppleACPIxxxx.kext in System/Library/Extensions, the xxx could be Family or in my case was Platform.
Within that file, go to the Plugins and Remove AppleACPIThermal.kext.
Don't forget to "chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions" !!!
you should also rm /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
and rm /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
and recreate those files by kextcache -k /System/Library/Extensions

It may not work for everyone, or every version, but it's worth a shot if your PC is melting, like mine was.

Now, my laptop runs at high 30's and low 40's C, compared to 60 - 70 C!!!
