Full Version: Constant freezing under OS X

After I installed a new X1600 AGP graphics card, the system will randomly freeze and will have to be turned off via the power switch. The system runs windows fine for hours on end, so I am really confused. What type of problem might I have, and how can I go about solving it? I thought it might be a power supply problem, so I unplugged all of the hardware from the power besides the harddrive motherboard and graphics card; the system still froze. I would appreciate any quick feedback as this is certainly confusing me.
Thanks

Some more information on the manufacturer of the card (not just ATi) and what model it is (Radeon x1600XT? PRO?) would help out quite a bit. Other than that, RTFM
Rammjet
Might try booting your install DVD, go to Disk Utility and run both Repair Disk and then Repair Permissions.

It is a GeCube X1600Pro 256MB, and the entire system worked with a GeForce FX 5500 without any freezing. After the initial installation, the system worked fine for a couple days, and now 15 minutes or so is the maximum amount of time the system runs without locking up.
bryan Rowe
Well I used the install disc to repair disk and permissions, and I have been up and running for a little while without any problems (knock on wood). What kind of issues can the repairing cure that could cause system freezing?
Rammjet
Were any errors reported that were repaired?

Repair Disk repairs the files that keep track of the files on your hard drive. Electrical glitches can corrupt those during a write - and your hard drive does a lot of writes.

If permissions are screwed up, applications can't run properly.

Yes there were a few errors on both the permissions and disk.

I do not recall the disk repairs, but the permissions had three concerning Lexmark printers(which I do not have) and one concerning widgets. I am not sure, but it has been running fine with only one crash for awhile now. Is it possible that Camino is related to the crashing because it seems that it is usually open when it crashes, or is that just coincidence?
Rammjet
Camino shouldn't be bringing down your whole system. Any chance you were watching videos in Camino? I've heard about problems with Quicktime if you don't have the latest version 7.1.2.
bryan Rowe
Well it crashed again. I was listening to iTunes, using NeoOffice, updating Quicktime, and had a page open on Safari. It froze, and so I restarted and ran the repair disk permissions again. I got:

I have an HP printer, but I do have a ATI x1600Pro 256AGP GeCube card that I installed and the problems began after it. Does the above info relate to the crashing at all??
Rammjet
They might, especially the "owner and group" error might have been serious enough to prevent using the x1600 at all. Perhaps now things will be good.
bryan Rowe
Another weird thing, every time I restart, the permissions need to be repaired. What can I do to fix that?
Rammjet
I don't know. Shouldn't be happening.

Try going to Terminal and typing:

sudo diskutil repairPermissions /
(and give your password)
bryan Rowe
So it lasted a lot longer than usual, but the system still froze. This time Eclipse, Thunderbird and iTunes were running. I did the sudo repairpermission thing during the time it was working. It does not require a restart before it will become affective does it? I am at wits end, it is hard to have a desktop that wants to work for sprints of time.
Rammjet
No reboot is necessary after repairing permissions. Go to Disk Utility and see if the last repair permissions "stuck".

When you installed, did you select SSE3 or SSE2?

I think something is wrong with your installation, but I do not know what it is. I'm starting to think a reinstall is in order.

I have a P4 2.6GHz and selected SSE2. The install worked perfectly for months with the GeForce FX5500 card, maybe this is what I get for wanting hardware acceleration. On a positive note, I installed Cocktail and ran a couple things including the cache cleaner and the repair permissions no longer come back. So as of right now, all permissions were fine upon reboot. This is also my second install with the video card, and it would be really dissapointing if it was the video cards fault. I get decent XBench scores, around 60, without any tweaks after a fresh install and with the Bor... patch installed. Those scores would be better if I looked into that AGP patch I am sure, but I would like to get the system to be stable for now. I will report back if this current session crashes as it has been up for a little bit of time. Thanks for taking the time to help me , I really appreciate it.
bryan Rowe
Well it didnt take too long before another crash. I rebooted and checked permissions and disk errors to find none that needed repairing. I also noticed that once the system freezes, I can still eject and close the disk tray via the button on the case. Ejecting the disk causes the processor activity light to flicker, so it is possible that the system is still unfrozen somewhere? Any other advice would be great... I am really not sure where to turn now.

Using SATA? This is exactly what happens to me on nForce 4 SATA.

Nope, no SATA here, and it is really strange due to the installation of a video card starting all these weird issues. My HD does say that S.M.A.R.T. is not supported and I recall reading something on that awhile ago though. Windows runs perfectly fine in this dual boot config, so it shouldnt be that complicated.
Rammjet
One thing that would be interesting is to look at the console.log and the system.log

Go to the Utilities menu and open Console. By default, it displays the console log. Look for any interesting error messages, especially after you booted up. Then click on Logs in the upper left corner and select system.log. Look for any interesting errors since you booted.
bryan Rowe
Here is the system.log through a couple freezes

I see nothing particularly unusual. Many of the errors you have, I also have. There doesn't seem to be any unusual activity logged right before the crash and your restart.

What kind of wireless device do you have that it isn't working?
bryan Rowe
Could this chunk of the code be causing the freeze? It is the last message before the time jumps in most places in the log. Also, I have found that if I use one stick of RAM, the system stays up for longer... maybe just coincidence? I have no wireless device, I use a wired connection to the internet that is part of the intel chipset.

Here is the full System Profiler information attached.

I would call it a driver problem. Were u using np_s drivers and deleted the IONDR....kext

Maybe you would be better off with a reinstall on another HDD

mdimportserver is a Spotlight process. I'm still trying to nail down why menu bar items and Spotlight go awry. Did you upgrade to 10.4.7 and if so, by what method?

Only thing I did driver wise, was use Neo's installer to make the X1600Pro work properly after a fresh install. I did update to 10.4.7 via the Jas method, which seemed to work fine. I had freezes before and after this update though.

A wild idea - what if you uninstalled the Neo patch for a while and see if the crashes go away. You'll have some graphic problems, but the system will be usable. If the crashes go away, you can try the manual Boris method. If they don't go away, you can resinstall Neo's patch although I'm really thinking a resinstall is becoming a viable thing to try and eliminate the problem.

I have removed the Neo patch, we will see if anything changes. Would you want to see any logs or anything, while I wait for a possible crash?
Rammjet
No logs, they don't seem to record any unusual activity before the crash.

Looks promising... Keeping my fingers crossed, and documents saved! Just out of curiosity, what does Neo's patch do differently that may allow the Bor... patch to work correctly?
Rammjet
Neo's copies over an OpenGL framework from 10.4.5 and the various ATI kexts, I don't know if he uses 10.4.5, 10.4.6 or 10.4.7.

With Boris, you don't replace the framework and the kexts are what you installed, usually 10.4.6.

Hey there...
the framework is from 4.5 and the kexts (only x1000) are from 10.4.7! this is why it is working with the x1900 series! i recognized some errors with the new kexts! so if im gonna make a new version of this installer i will include the old kexts!
bryan Rowe
So after quite some time with no crashes, I have been considering trying the Bor... method. I looked through the first few steps, and when I went to check out my files to see if they had the lines of code that needed to be changed, I found that they didnt. For example, the first few steps require changes to lines that are nowhere to be found on this:

?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple\

What iso did you use? That file is only half as long as it should be.

Uninstalling Neo should just copy back your original file.
bryan Rowe
I used the 10.4.6 HotIso to install. It passed the check that OS X runs at the beginning. These random issues are very strange, I really followed the instructions well on everything I have done so far... I see a full reinstall being needed soon if we dont figure this out, but what is to guarantee this wont be the same after that?
bryan Rowe
To my surprise, my keyboard was running low on battery, so when I tried to scroll through the plist file, it was acting as if that was all there was. I replaced the batteries, and fixed applied the Boris patch. I am running back at native res, and we will see if OS X can stay up. One odd thing to note, with QuartzSimple, it informs me that Quartz2D is no longer supported, while System Profiler tells me that QE is not supported as well. With the Neo patch I had both... Maybe there is a forum post about this that I need to find.

I don't know. Other people have reported similar problems and no consistent reason has emerged. Maybe the 10.4.5 framework is needed for your card.

If you have Pacifist, you can extract it from Neo's installer and install it in your system.

But it might be a good idea to save your existing framework just in case.
Rockett
I had this happen to me with my old motherboard - It was the SiS chipset causing the problem. Same card, different mobo, no problem.

I have the same problem also.
Can someone provide how to solve it?

I have been looking over it, and I dont think it would be worth fiddling to get the hardware accel and risk having the system blow up again. I did read about a patch made to allow the system to realize that it is an AGP card since it is showing PCI in the system profiler. Also, since I am fairly new to macs, what is the best way to back up all this so that I can revert as easily as possible.
