Full Version: New Intel processors (e.g. Conroe), which mobos do they need?

The next generation of Intel processors starting with the Conroe is probably due July/August or so. I have heard the Conroe will be designed for the 775 socket. Will it work in any of the mobos with Intel 945 chipsets? The 945 chipset mobos already support dual processors, is there a chance? BTW., I think it is quite clear that the Conroe will be the CPU of the first Intel-based powermacs.

Looks as if even owners of current 975 chipset boards are in trouble. Hence, the 945 chipset is probably out of the Conroe game.

See this as well:

Thx for the link. I suppose the new Conroes will be pretty expensive in the beginning anyway.

Actually, I do not think they look to bad, about $315 for the one I would chose (but I am more likely to build with Woodcrest instead):

CODE
The E6700, which is a 2.67GHz chip with 4MB of cache and a 1066 front side bus will cost $529 while the E6600, a 2.40GHz version will cost $315. The other two members of the Intel Cointreau family have 2MB of cache apiece, with the E6400 (2.13GHz) costing $240, while the E6300 (1.86GHz) will cost $210.

Yeah, I wonder if the Connie's shared cache is going to make a real difference in OSX86. The prices will go down after a while, and the early adopters will find the bugs in the mobos. sorcerer.gif I sure hope that new OSX versions will remain "accessible" to us in the future. Props to all you "genius" coders, decrypters, hackers, etc. graduated.gif that help us "git our mac on"!!!!!!!!!!

I just visited the Mac store in our mall, and that big ol' aluminum laptop didn't really impress me. It was kinda slow for $2800. It seemed my Celeron D 336 was about as fast! I guess it didn't help that my salesperson didn't know much. He probably doesn't read this forum!! biggrin.gif

The Dell boys at the kiosk just outside Apple were a lot sharper, but they just don't have OSX86.

Yep, Macbook Pro with 1.83 GHz just scores 53 in XBench, many OSX86 installations posted here are a lot snappier.

The first (?) Conroe-compatible mobo from Asus is the P5B with Intel P965/iCH8 chipset.

mmmm until now we have been having problems with the new processors, cause we are using the kernel wich was BIOS compatiblem and it only "knows" about Pentium M anbd Pentium 4 and celerons, but it didnt know anything about CoreDuo, why do you think the new processor will be recgnized by our old Kernel?

just wondering...

I think we will have some problems with the new processors as well. Hmm... yet another reason to work on EFI.

I heard that the new chipset, 965 (I may have that wrong, I don't remember) and 975 will work with the chip. I was reading an article on Toms-Hardware. I may be wrong, but I can't seem to find the article again. Of course if that is true I would assume that also means a bios update.

That's right the 965 and 975 work with Conroe. However, apparently not all 975 boards do, specifically only revision "304" and later of Intel's D975XBX is supposed to support Conroe. However, revision "302" can be modified to support Conroe:

Anyway if we dont crack EFI we will not have anything... our old kernel can't suport them, like CoreDuos now. Its not a problem with the mainboard, its the processor.

How is the Efix86 doing? have been there days ago and i noted very good ppl working there.

Cheers!

I think the MacEFIx86 project is off to a decent start, but things really are just getting started. We are attracting some talented people to the need and also raising the priority of EFI in community, so I guess I am happy with the progress so far. But we need more people who can actually do the hard work and make things happen.

It seems clear the EFI is right next to the kernal is a lot of ways. Once we have some kind of Mac-like EFI firmware environment running, which I think we are months away from, then we have to deal with the kernel which is apparently patch for BIOS, not EFI. Whether is for EFI itself, for the new Intel chips or Leopard (OS X 10.5), the OSx86 community will be re-hacking the kernel and that might take a long time.

I don't know if you guys have seen this, but someone has already had osx86 running on a core2duo. t-break

Are you referring to taking advantage or new features of the core2duo's like virtualisation? (can't think of any other new features that coud affected by the kernel....)

If you look though, it looks as though SSE3 has been disabled to run the OS.

I didn't ever have any real problems with my AMD after the AMD patches came so I don't remember too much about the details but most of the dualcores required SSE3 emulation to run and/or one core disabled.

Looks like both cores are fully functional on that one though. Hmm.

really cheap (64€) and core 2 duo support, gma950, RAID, gigabit, SATA II.

What about the ASRock 775i945GZ?? The ASRock website seems to say 'Conroe compatible' but the FSB seems to be limited to 800. Perhaps a BIOS update??
RiceTea
The 945GZ chipsets seem to be limited to an 800 Mhz FSB.

the gigabyte that I posted also supports up to 800mhz fsb, can a 1066mhz fsb CPU be in this mobos? or do we need 800mhz conroes¿? (theres none yet)

I don´t have the answers yet. However, the latest layout of the Asus P5LD2-VM, widely used for OSX86 installations, supports the Core 2 Dual (Conroe) as well, has still the 945G chipset and runs with a 1066 MHz FSB.
