Thought I would start a thread to discuss all success and failures for the Compaq V5101 Laptop. This is a beautiful budget laptop with an amazing 15.4" widescreen.
First specs:
AMD Sempron 3300+ Mobile CPU (SSE3 supported)
768 Mb PC2700 RAM
Phillips DVD/CD+RW
Conexant AC-97 sound
Syanptics TrackPad
Broadcom 802.11 b/g wifi
Realtek 8139 NIC
ATI x200 SouthBrige (I think)
ATI Mobility Radeon XPress 200 Series video
Initial results:
Myzar V4 PPF on 10.4.4 DVD
Native install - 100% no Problems
Video: stuck at 1024x768 no native resolution change no QE/CI
Sound: No device found
WiFi: Did not work, could be no support or could be do to switch not working
Onboard LAN: Working
Had to take it back to Windows, so if anyone else wants to take this a little further...

I know this is an old topic, but 10.4.8 works very well with this laptop. Except for the noisy fan, which is constantly on. Anyone heard of a fix, or a way to get the fan to run only when needed?

-I guess what you are going to have to do is navigate to System->Library->Extensions (in Finder)
-Then look for AppleACPIPlatform.kext or AppleACPIFamily.kext (whichever you have)
-Copy it to your desktop just in case you need a backup.
-Right Click on it and select "Show Package Contents"
-Navigate to Contents->Plugins
-Right Click on AppleACPIThermal.kext and select "Move To Trash"
-Type in your password if asked to authenticate...
-Empty your trash.
-Open Terminal and type "sudo rm -R /System/Library/Extensions.mkext"
-Enter your password.
-Also type "sudo rm -R /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache"
-Reboot
Report back and let me know how it goes, if it goes...
I ran across that page a while ago and tried it, but the fan is still always on.
The only thing I did differently than sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions was sudo rm -f /System/Library/Extensions.*
But I guess touching the directory causes the two files that I deleted to be rebuilt, so it is probably the same thing. Is kextcache -ke any different? I doubt that any of these threee options can make a difference.

Yeah, you're right about the kextcache. It doesn't make any difference. I edited my post before you replied.
I don't have anymore ideas. I wish I did, but I don't have that particular laptop, and I am also running on a desktop primarily. Maybe someone else knows how to fix this. Sorry that didn't help.
Sorry, but I don't have such a problem with the fan on my laptop.
