hi,

first let me thank you for your great support and your fast reply.
to me it seems that NVidiaEFI.kext is not loading at all. when i boot with the -v argument, i can't find a line that indicates about NVidiaEFI.
i just wanted to try NVidiaEFI.kext because of this post,...

Sleep works if u :
jas 10.4.8 install.
jas 10.4.9 combo upgrade.

I dont know if the video cards affect anything, but i use NvidiaEFI 1.0 for my 7900gs.

Then install the paulicat kernel, and sleep/resume works fine.

With the netkas kernel, sleep works, but the resume locks the display up, no keyboard, etc, might be able to still ssh in, though i don't know.

I'd really like to dig more into the display reinitializing issue, where the display goes to "sleep" but when u move a mouse, all it does is go from black, to back lit black.

If anyone has any ideas i'd be glad to help debug.

Where can I get this paulicat kernel from? I have been looking for it but have been unable to locate it.

Thanks.

E1705 user here.

google paulicat and you will see it smile.gif

Two quick things.

For those who are using the Sleep Trick to enable the second core (like I am now), hitting sleep yourself can be kind of a pain.. I'm using the following method to automate it.

Install Dockables! 1.0.3 Here is the Link
(it's freeware)

One of the dockable items is Sleep. You can then go to System Preferences->Accounts->Login Items (for your account). Add the application Sleep from the Dockables folder to your list of items.

This will then automatically send your computer to sleep as soon as it boots and logs you in. You can then just wake it up and be ready to go. The only downside is if you just log out of your account and log back in... it's going to sleep again. But I never logout so this wasn't an issue for me. This really works best for those who only have 1 user account.

Second... I've done a custom BIOS Splash screen for my E1705 that others might like. You are a little limited as the Dell BIOS only allows for 640x480 16 color images so I found Black and White to be good for me.

I've attached the image file... you can download the Dell Splash utility from Dell directly or use the floppy image file I've attached with a program such as nero (create a bootable cd and use the image file for the boot portion). If anyone is really interested I can give better instructions for it later.

basically boot from CD and type spl2 DELL.BMP
cyonix
i found also a good app for scrolling without scrollpad drivers,

smart scroll x 2.5 -> demonoid

u can hold the control button and scroll like in windows. great app for those like us, without synaptics native driver

I got pretty much everything working the only thing that I cant is the bluetooth. I have a Dell Inspiron 6400. Does anyone have any suggestions on getting it to recognize it? Thanks

Unusual, bluetooth should be recognized without any problems as far as I know?

Is it correctly enabled in the BIOS?
damesj
Yup, it is enabled in the bios.

any updated to 10.4.10? I got an E1405 with Dell TrueMobile 1490. Last time i ran both airport update and security update it disabled my wifi (Dell 1490). I dunno if the update methods for 10.4.10 disable the wifi or not.
rogabean
I updated and all is fine. Backup the kext if you modified it to get it working.

Do you have revision A00 or A01 of the dell 1500 card?

And does anyone have A00? i just ordered one on ebay but i didnt realize there was two different versions. Does it suck?

Ok, so i decided to install this yesterday (right when site was gone.. ARGH) but i'm glad it's back google cache is very limited.. it seems that i can;t get a working link for the IOnetworking 10.4.6 version to get my network card working on my e1705/9400 anybody have a working link?

They make no difference.
A-ONE
Thank you for the info, there is a guy on ebay claiming that the A00 version has issues and thats what made dell 'dump' them.

Hes selling the A01 version of course, but what was it a martketing scheme or the truth?

Ill go by what you say

http://cgi.ebay.com/Dell-Draft-N-1500-Wire...1QQcmdZViewItem

thats the A01 and this is the one i ordered

devilhood
Hmmm.

There have been known issues with 1500 wireless cards and Windows Vista.
It causes audio pops at random points, but the problem does not occur on Windows XP, Linux or Mac OS X.
Perhaps the new revision was aimed at resolving issues with Vista... who knows... I haven't read any reports on it nor can I seem to find any sad.gif

There has been no official word from Dell either.

I luckily managed to pick up an A00 version of the Dell 1500 for a measly £8 off eBay quite some time ago, and yes, I get audio pops on Vista whenever the Wireless is enabled via BIOS.
Until I get an A01 version I wont be able to confirm anything else for you.

I'll try and obtain one next week if possible and let you know.
A-ONE
Well if i do get the A00 ill be sure to dual boot XP. No vista.

And as far as the whole bios thing, i know that dell has a bios update for these notebooks thats corrects some issues with compatibility for the 1500.

Ive got a e1405 but i dont have the latest bios update, yet. Im running A08 and i plan to update to A10 when i receive my card. Ill let you know if anything.

Just a quick question.. and I'm NOT promising anything... but are there enough people using the 1505/6400/1705/9400, that if I were say put together a special install disk, it would be of use to you guys complete with different install options for different hardware?

Or even just a special post install package?

Right now my time is being taken up in iDVD doing some work for the girl but when that's done I'm gonna need a new project since I can't work on EFI at the moment anyway.

I can be a beta tester or even help you do it, haven't had much experience with projects on OS X. I might not be able to help, I am waiting for someone to contact me about a web project.
I can also host a development wiki or forum for this project, SVN if needed.

Depending on your GFX-card, that might well be possible. Correct me if I am wrong, but so far I haven't seen anybody with a GMA950 (945GM) who successfully managed to also wake up the display from sleep. It always stays dark, so there is no work-around to enable both Cores on these machines.

Is it maybe a bug in the Video BIOS that prevents the display to wake up from sleep? In the latest Intel-drivers for the GMA950/945GM (15.4.3), there is a DOS-utility for flashing the Video Bios. There are also BIOS-versions much newer than the one I am using on my Dell Inspiron E1505/6400.
Has anyone already tried to flash the Video BIOS in order to see if it fixes the "No display wakeup from sleep" issue?
Namor
That sounds like an interesting idea.. Flashing the video bios..... Might try that out....

Same here... Blank screen on wake... only way.. plug in an external monitor.. and it wakes...
warning... only can do this once per boot for me .. second time.. the image gets all messed up and frozen/not moving

Im going to try this now and get back with you guys on results, only thing is i have to reformat my entire hdd... Never did a dual boot.

The latest Intel driver includes VBIOS for 945G, 945GM (e.g. many GMA950 notebooks) and 965.

You need to upgrade the VBIOS from MS-DOS, it doesn't work in Windows. So download a bootdisk or boot into DOS using a pen drive.

"To use the TSR VBIOS, the ZIP format graphics drivers must be unzipped to a folder on the hard disk (eg. C:\INTEL), the VBIOS ZIP file must be extracted to a folder on the hard disk (eg. C:\INTEL\VBIOS945GM), and a line (eg. C:\INTEL\VBIOS945GM\cal_1413.exe) must be added to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file that runs the TSR at startup. Please note that this TSR will not work with operating systems that do not support TSRs, such as Windows* XP, 2000, Me, or NT*."

The Intel website also says that sometimes, you can only upgrade the VBIOS as part of a general BIOS upgrade. Unfortunately, Dell hasn't included it in most BIOS upgrades, so my E1505/6400 BIOS is still very old. :-/

That would be charming. I would be very happy if you did. I would gladly offer any help I can.I don't want to be running around installing AppleHDA one day, then the old networking kext the next. It would be even better if it had an option to get new updates from the net, so we could install postburn patches.

I tried to upgrade to 10.4.10 (Inspiron 1505/6400) but I am always stuck with a black screen shortly before the Login-Window usually comes up. The screen shortly flashes in blue, but then goes dark again. Only replacing my extensions-backup and old mach_kernel solved the problem.

Did anyone with a similar notebook (GMA950) ever manage to upgrade to 10.4.10? What could be the problem? Incompatible loginwindow.app or GMA950-kext?

Ok, just saw in another thread that the problem with 10.4.10 on GMA950-Dell's might be related to AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext.

Well, I *was* the problem (I just successfully tried and am finally running 10.4.10). So when you upgrade to 10.4.10 on a GMA950-Dell, make sure that you replace AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext with an older 10.4.8 or 10.4.9 version.

This has always been the case when upgrading *any* laptop with a GMA 950.
My Dell Inspiron 6400 works fine with 10.4.10 /w the 8.10.1 Kernel.

Sound, Wireless etc. all working fine. As always only problem is both cores not working properly sad.gif

AFAIK, the "sleep trick" to get both cores working has never worked on Dells equipped with a GMA950. The display never wakes up. On Dells with other Gfx-solutions, this seems to be less of a problem.

CDs/DVDs/Disk Images work fine.

As for the sleep trick that's never worked for me unfortunately because GMA950 = no sleep, as quasar_x correctly stated.

Though interestingly, I was able to use Mac with both cores enabled (ie. without cpus=1), but it was rather jittery! - However it didn't crash as it with all previous versions...

Hey Fellas,

I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I'm still having 2 problems that I cant seem to work out. Both problems are listed in the original post but the recommended fix isn't working for me. Hopefully someone can help me out here.

My Software/Hardware
- E1705
- STAC 9200 Audio
- Geforce Go 7900 GS Video
- 2 GB Memory
- 200 GB Toshiba SATA 7200RPM HD

- JAS 10.4.8 w/ 10.4.9 Update

Problems
1. Sound stuttering/cracking/poping when I first start to play a file. But only at the beginning of the track or every time I pause and start again. The original post said to upgrade the kernel, I'm running OSX 10.4.9 with the 8.9.1 kernel. (I didnt change the one that installed with the JaS image) Is there a certain kernel I should be using?

2. 32-bit color banding. I read the first post and am using the recommended drivers. DiaboliK's Natit, np_'s NvidiaEFI & np_'s LaptopDisplay 1.0.0d1 didnt help. Any advice?

I should also note that on startup after the grey apple load screen I get blue stripes on screen with what looks like a white liquid expanding from the bottom of the screen for a couple of seconds before the display blacks out, snaps to white and than loads to the desktop. I get full resolution once in OSX... but I seem to have a driver issue.

So like I said, if someone could just point me in the right direction it would really help.

Thanks

Hello, I am fairly new to the scene here and have obtained the uphuck 1.3 osx 10.4.9 install dvd... I am trying to install the os and I dont seem to be getting the correct combination of kernel and or drivers... Since after install I get a blank blue screen for the desktop and nothing loads from there... I have an Inspiron 6400... Please advise on the correct parameters to select in the install... Many thanks in advance!

sachampion -- sounds like the same setup, 1st thing you need to do is disable your 2nd core in bios -- then reinstall using the sse3 -2 .. then you will be good to go!!

Thanks dc2000 it worked!! Ok so now how do I change my kernel for 10.4.10 update... I have the 10.4.10 Mac OS X delta update for hackintosh package and I have copied the kext to the extensions folder... and want to install the mach_kernel update file but dont know how to do it... Thanks again.

Unfortunately no... I hope he hasn't given up on it. sad.gif

Meanwhile it's maybe best to keep on buggering Dell for the lack of AHCI/NCQ-support since this has a high potential of fixing the dual core issue of the Dells (as I understand).
devilhood
Seeing as I wont be selling my Inspiron anymore, I'm up for making quite a big issue out of this AHCI problem.
We need to really get on Dell's back to implement this feature.

I'm going to be phoning them over a period of weeks to make sure they are aware of this demand. I have already e-mailed them today about it. Please, if anyone wants to join in, it would be extremely helpful, as we need to make it clear to them that something so 'standardized' with practically every other motherboard needs to be implemented ASAP.

They've had months and months to sort their BIOS out, yet there are still many issues present, such as the Dell Wireless 1500 Vista issue with audio popping and ExpressCard incompatibility with a wide range of external hubs such as USB and Firewire add-ons.

If they expect Linux users to take an interest with their laptops, they will need to add AHCI support, otherwise there is going to a lot of pee'd off users sleep.gif
Dodo99
Anyone done any testing on the new 9400 A09 BIOS that came out yesterday?
rogabean
I updated to A09. Doesn't do much.

Excellent, the new A09 BIOS fixes the problem with Firewire ExpressCards! Now my Belkin TI card works perfectly biggrin.gif

I got a reply back from Dell regarding AHCI btw:

Problem: Update - Software/BIOS
Operating System: Windows XP
Problem Description:

Not applicable, read description.

The hard-disk in my laptop is NCQ and AHCI compatible with your ICH7-M board that is present in the Inspiron 9400/E1705, but the very latest BIOS (A08) does not have a feature to enable AHCI.
This is a very serious issue for potential customers using your laptop for Linux and Audio/Video Production, as they will need to take advantage of their hard-disk's maximum capabilities, but it would seem you are purposely limiting this.

There have been many complaints on your forum and also amongst a few communities I am a member of.
Do you ever plan to add this standardized feature into the BIOS, as many of your competitors already allow this.

I would really appreciate if the AHCI issue could be raised to your engineers, as this is a very important feature and SHOULD be addressed.

Also, regarding the Dell 1500 Wireless card and Vista Ultimate, have any steps been taken to fix the audio popping issue that has been causing literally hundreds of users serious problems?

Please get back to me about this if you can.

Regards,

Pawel.

Not possible to troubleshoot this issue as it is a BIOS limitation.

Sounds promising, let's hope that it's more than just phrasemongering. Maybe I should write them too since the AHCI/NCQ-issue also applies to the Inspiron 6400/E1505.

If we could only directly get in touch with Dell's BIOS coders...
