ok, now i don't know whether to run the Airport Extreme Update 2007-002 and/or Security Update 2007-004 (Universal) or not. Last time, I updated everything and my newly installed 1490 stopped showing up in Network Port Configuration. I didn't know how to fix it so i just did a re-install. I did a clean install before that so it wasn't much of a problem.

Chrysaor, did you also ran the Security Update?

is there any reason why the broadcom 440 only goes up to 10mbps? its using the IONetworking kext on here

Is there any progree on the both cores issue yet?
devilhood
Nope.

Give it some time, Prasys is working hard at the issue.
patato
A question.
On the x1400s, is it possible to have dual output?
And does diabloik's x1300 .kext have more features than adding the device id to Apple's .kext? I have heard that you are still limited to 1400x1050 with his .kext.
Much thanks.

Does anyone know how to use clamshell mode? I want only external display works and internal one is off so that it will have better graphic performance? In macbook it can be easily done. However on hackintosh laptop seems it wont work. So there any hack for this? It could be very useful for some people.

Hi,

I'm about to buy a Dell m640, core 2 duo T5500, Intel GMA950 and Dell wireless 1930 and I wnated to know what version should I install for better performance. I'd like to have QE/CI support and network support at least. Also, do any of you own this model or another similar? If so, how does it perform?

Many thanks in advance.

@viperrt74: The Expresscardslot is working! I'd running my SATA-Expresscard in it without problems.
devilhood
I can confirm that it works fine, just make sure you get a Vendor supported ExpressCard/34 or /54 like a Belkin (they use TI chip) otherwise you can run into recognition problems.

e.g. don't buy the Novatech Firewire ExpressCard/34 smile.gif

I can't boot without the DVD in the drive, I just finished installing OS X to my SATA drive instead of a USB attached, the partition is active and MBR, I repaired permissions. Anything else I can try?
devilhood
Care to be more specific? what error do you get without booting from the DVD?
You could try repairing the Mac partition MBR from fdisk, read this thread: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=39253
mindaugas
so basically I want to put OS X on this SATA --> USB2 drive, I want to leave my Vista drive alone. I don't even care about dual booting, I can just hit F12 and boot off USB drive. But when I do that it says no boot sector detected and moves on to Vista. So that means I'm missing the MBR, but OS X says the MBR is there, or at least the info in Disk Utility says this. You have a lot more info in your guide so I am going to follow that step by step.
mindaugas
yay! I got it, thanks to yer fdisk directions, that's what I needed was the know-how to fix the mbr. STarted CD in -s, ran these commands, and VOILA, boots.

fdisk -e /dev/rdisk1 (CD was 0)
flag 1 (only part on drive)
update
write
quit
reboot
devilhood
No problemo! thumbsup_anim.gif
mindaugas
so far so good, booting good except this SATA drive I have is being funky. I can't restart, the drive shuts off and won't boot, I'm gonna try a new drive, but otherwise working fine.

I have a new problem though. I fixed the internal NIC, but maybe 30seconds to sometimes 5 minutes it will stop working. The wireless works great so I still have net, but connecting to my server sux over wireless. Any ideas?

Also, how do I disable the built in display and use just an external? all I have is mirroring, I did add the laptopdisplay.kext file and the IOGraphicsFamily.

Thanks!
fumanju
Anyone know if it's possible to get the media card slot to work on Dell Inspiron E1405 (not sure if other models have it).
devilhood
fumanju, it has been said many times in this thread already that it is impossible to get the media card reader to work tongue.gif
cosmo1t
I have the same issue with the networking not working. I was logged into a switch and noticed that the nic started sending corrupted packets. (this is using the 10.4.6 ionetworkingfamily.kext)

I have a feeling there may be different chips on different revisions of these boards.

If anyone else has experienced this and fixed it, please let me know how/what you did.

Thanks

@devilhood what about the mediakeys, do u think it is possible to map them and use them under osx ?

Quite possibly.

They could be mapped to provide Apple Remote type functionality, much in the way that you can use the keyboard to do it, but I'm only speculating.

Sleep works with 10.4.9!!!

Doing a clean install of 10.4.8 + Jas's 10.4.9 SSE3 combo update,
manuallly copying the kexts from kext_disabled + paulicat kernel = sleep working!!

I'm on 10.4.9 now and sleep is functioning great!.

Just working on restoring my apps from my dvd.. everything seems to be going well.
That Library folder in the user directory is sure worth keeping (firefox profiles, thunderbird profiles, etc, etc)

Great guide!!
devilhood
paulicat's kernel? that's for 10.4.8 not 10.4.9 and it doesn't work with the System.kext from 10.4.9.
That's prob why it's working for you.. Sleep used to work for me with 10.4.8 but it would never wake up.

Darwin cos-hackintoshs-computer.local 8.9.1 Darwin Kernel Version 8.9.1: Wed Apr 18 21:20:01 EDT 2007; paulicat:xnu-792.18.15/BUILD/obj/RELEASE_I386 i386 i386

works great in 10.4.9

..
devilhood
errr, where did you obtain this kernel from?

msg me on IRC if you're there.
farff
Hi,

First thank you for these wonderful topics : I have nearly succeeded to have a good OS X working on my I 9400, except for the sound that was stuttering and noisy with several external soundcards.

I have founded that the cause might be a fsb problem : in the Mac Properties the frequency was 2.4 GHz instead of 2, and the clock time was too fast.

I have modified the boot.plist with fsb=166 and after the reboot I have no more USB devices : no mouse, no drives... and no soundcard !

I have tried to suppress the fsb line but after reboot the CPU clock was 2.4 GHz but I had always no USB.

I have updated the kernel to 8.9.1, and now the CPU is well 2 GHz without the need of the fsb line, but I have still no USB devices.

My first install was jas 10.4.8 updated with combo 10.4.9 (I needed 10.4.9 to try an audio software).

I have spent several hours to search on the forum for a solution, but I have not found anything.

Can somebody help me please ?

Thanks a lot !
devilhood
farff, I mentioned a few times in the guide, make sure you get the latest Universal SSE2/SSE3 or the SSE3 Sleep kernel.
They are both Auto FSB; meaning that you do not need to manually set any FSB value.

My sound does not stutter with either of these kernels smile.gif

I'll add a few bits in my guide to make sure people are running the latest kernel to avoid such problems.
farff
Yes, I suppose that I have made something wrong when updating to 10.4.9...
I have not tried the sound with the 10.4.8 so I don't know if it is related.

The symptom was exactly what was described here :

Time is Wrong or Audio Stutters
If after upgrading to 10.4.8, your clock isn't keeping time and your audio and video stutters, the early 8.8.1 kernels need to have FSB set at boot. The best way to solve this is to update to the latest kernel. See above for methods. Otherwise, you need to set the FSB frequency.

But now, there is no more need for any fsb value in the boot.plist, the CPU clock is well at 2 GHz and the time doesn't run too fast.
So I suppose that the kernel problem is solved ?

Do you think that there will be something to do to retrieve my USB ports, or must I install a new clean OS ?
Thanks.
devilhood
Basically, the older Darwin 8.9.1 kernels relied on manual FSB entry. This meant that the timing wasn't always accurate, resulting in many problems such as Sound stuttering.
The new kernels fixes this problem for good.

You will need the Apple USB patch to fix your USB ports, search around the forum, many people have had this problem.
farff
Thanks for the infos.

I have not found any help to reactivate the USB, so I have installed again the initial JAS 10.4.8 over the previous install and now all works fine : the CPU clock is 2 GHz, my USB audio sounds nice, but of course not the apps that needed 10.4.9...

But I prefer to wait before being sure that it will not corrupt my audio this time !

Last time I have just run the JAS combo 10.4.9 update.
Is there anything to do special ?
mindaugas
where can we find the new kernel?

nm ... it was right there in the guide, go to irc. that was easy, sound and video stutter fixed, yay!
farff

I wanted to be sure...

So I have nevertheless updated my working jas 10.4.8 with the "JaS.10.4.9.Combo.Update.Intel.SSE3" and I confirm that now the CPU clock shows 2.4 GHz instead of 2, and that
he sound is stuttering.
The kernel is Darwin 8.9.1.
What is wrong ???

Are the 8.9.1 kernels in the first page of the guide differents ?
I don't want to use IRC on Windows, what easy client do you advise to use in OS X in order to download a working kernel ?
Or is there another mean other than IRC ?

Or is there a guide to update from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9 without using the jas.combo ?
It is rather difficult for me to understand the explainations in english...

Thanks for the help.
devilhood
farff, I will try to explain easier.

The JaS releases have old Darwin 8.9.1 kernel.

Use X-Chat Aqua or Colloquy as IRC client on Macintosh smile.gif

Download new Darwin 8.9.1 kernel from irc.osx86.hu in channel #1049

Kernel will be in ZIP file, extract it and rename to mach_kernel.new

Move mach_kernel.new into root /

Open Terminal and type:

sudo mv /mach_kernel.new /mach_kernel

You do not need to manually set the FSB value, it is automatic with new kernel.

Reboot machine and sound stuttering and CPU speed will be fixed biggrin.gif
Gcrumpets
i just installed the newest sse3 kernel and the cpu throttler/speedstep package (without installing the universal kernel that came with the installer) on my core duo e1505, but im still not getting a succesfull sleep....should i be able to?
devilhood
Not really, the package itself is a work-in-progress, so not everyone is reporting success with it.
Give it some time and Prasys will put out a version that will have Dell's ACPI tables read properly, then we will have full Sleep AND Dual-Core.
I'm at work now, but when I get back later I will see if I can dump those ACPI tables so Prasys can get cracking with his kext.

how and where do I download the latest kernel? when i try to go to the irc site, all i get is a "it works" and nothing else. I have tried googling and browsing everywhere to get it but without success. Thank you in advance
cosmo1t
Fixed corrupt networking!!!.

I used the AppleBCM440 kext from 10.4.3 and inserted it into the 10.4.9 IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins

it seems to really have solved my timeout issues, and packet corruptions.

woot.
devilhood
@ viperrt74: It has been explained a million times on this thread, please READ carefully. farff knew how to get the kernel from my explanation above, and he's not even a fluent english speaker.

@ cosmo1t: I had the same problem until I used the IONetworkFamily.kext from 10.4.6, and then everything was fine smile.gif

the other thing
i tried this morininng, and i was able to record through audiohijackpro, and also through imovie.
both gave me sounds.
then i assume it might be something paticular about the garageband thing.
regards.

Quoting an old post I know, but yesterday I was playing with Garageband and I was too unable to get sound through the Sigmatel. I had to use my X-Fi instead.

If the Subwoofer and the stereo speakers could be somehow swapped in the kext, this would probably solve the problem (making the subwoofer the 2nd audio device, not the first).

I'm thinking of setting up a website with all the files required for getting the Dell laptops working in OSX. Anybody interested?
devilhood
flibble, I think the best thing to work on is to build a Dell Laptop Installer package.
I was working on a Dell Hackintosh web-site with a myBB forum, but after consideration, I decided to ditch it because there really wasn't much point.
If people want to get files, everything is perfectly accessible here and on the developer's web-sites.
