I know chamaleon was needed some time ago in order to get correct timing with vanilla installs in 45nm cpu's. So maybe that's the improvement you are noticing.

Anyway, EVERYBODY nowadays should have installed either chamaleon or PCEFI v9...which by the way is just chamaleon with extra stuff
