I keep getting a kernal panic, or the screen that says "Your computer needs to restart" when I try and install software..

Check my sig for the specs...

Kalyway 10.5.2 / Vanilla Kernal

I'm thinking about doing the combo update to 10.5.3 and then the apple update to 10.5.5. Is this a good idea? Might it remedy the problem??!

Well I tried the combo update but OSX had a kernal panic half way through, needless to say its pissed right up now - as I expected. Gonna start fresh from 10.5.1 and hopefully I'll be ok. Gonna follow PCWIZ's installation guide word by word
